There is something about the first panel and Nick’s almost giddy “this is not what I thought would happen today” that I absolutely love. As a mom of two teens, I know that so much of teen life is a combination of monotony (the demands of school and extracurricular activities, the repetitive chores at home, etc.) and uncertainty (looming university/ career choices, friend and relationship drama, waiting on test scores, trying to figure yourself out). This joyful spontaneous moment and Nick’s comment remind us all that sometimes reality exceeds expectations, not because an experience is perfect, but because it happened in a beautiful or unexpected way. That’s a reminder we all need!
