Nick 😭😭😭

cassidy cassidy

This is a tough one to analyse because it can be extremely difficult to tell exactly what a character is feeling just from facial expressions. But I don't think Charlie is being clingy, they've just sort of reached a milestone in their relationship so it's fine to be excited about that. I think Charlie's "ha ha" wasn't his "I'm not okay" ha ha, but more so just a way to break up the silence. I don't believe he would want Nick feeling crap about leaving him for a few days. Nick may yes, feel a little bad and guilty, but ultimately he knows this is the right thing to do

Sara

I think Nicks facial expressions are because I think it’s hitting him that he will be leaving Charlie and not only Charlie but also his dogs, friends, and mum.

I think nick is worried not for the 5 days trips , is bc he knows that this trip is to find a college and when it’s going to be time , he would need to be apart from Charlie the most of the time bc of college ( we all know that he wants Leeds , so for that )

Nils

Is it me or does Nick look as if his conscience is requesting a heart to heart. Charlie is harping on the 5 day thing a bit much... foreshadowing Nick&Charlie a bit. So they will probably fight two times over Nicks decision where to go to university. But on the other hand I can see Charlie be torn but supportive for Nick to study in Leeds, he will later regret it of course.

I don’t think he is being clingy at all. He’s showing love and affection. He doesn’t know what Nick is thinking (only we do ☺️).

GirlHero

Road trip!! I wonder if Nick, Tara, and Elle are salty or sweet travel snack people?

Fabiola

Tara is so ready to tour all the Unis!

Yeah, I think it’s easy for readers to forget that these characters are not omniscient and do not have all the info that we do! (re: other characters’ inner thoughts, what the future holds for them, etc.!)

I’ll be honest, what Nick is doing really pisses me off. He’s considering a college like Leeds that is considerably farther away than anything he has discussed so far. Under no circumstance does he need to go to a college that far away in Leeds for his first year. Your first year of university you can take a lot of the BS classes that are required for just about any degree. That can be done anywhere so he doesn’t have to leave Charlie. He could go to a closer university for one year, take a gap year, or do online while he waits for Charlie to finish his final year of high school. this is not a typical high school romance. They are in a committed relationship and he is CHOOSING to move far away from Charlie. And you could see by the look on his face he knows what he’s doing is wrong .

kitty

He shouldn’t have to wait for Charlie at all. Your perspective is all wrong. One year of visiting so that he goes to his dream college is not the end of the world. I’m sure that Nick is hesitating on telling Charlie about it because he doesn’t know how to tell him without Charlie taking it the wrong way or maybe he’s scared about how Charlie will react or feel. Maybe Nick is scared about what will happen to them and wants to avoid fighting about it. Or maybe he doesnt want to make Charlie feel bad for being excited about other colleges. You just dont know. If he wants to start his new college life, right after highschool, thats not on awful thing.

He’s not doing anything wrong. We all know they end up going to different universities and it’s such a positive thing for both of them.

And also Alice has said the reason Nick hasn’t mentioned anything to Charlie is because he honestly doesn’t know what he wants for universities

boombroadcast

Nick hasn’t said anything to Charlie yet because he is clearly still unsure of what he wants, and needs this trip to figure things out? And as wonderful and special as their relationship is, Nick and Charlie are still just teenagers with their entire lives ahead of them, and their own interests and aspirations as individuals. Nick does not owe it to Charlie to take a gap year, or to do something super disruptive to his education (and social life!) like switch universities after his first year, just so he can stay close to home temporarily. If their roles were reversed, I would also hate for Charlie, who is quite studious and ambitious, to let proximity to Nick be the main factor guiding his uni applications/decision. iirc next year Charlie is going to try for Cambridge and ultimately end up at UCL. Two excellent schools that I imagine would probably be out of reach for Nick. Nick and Charlie were *so young* when they got together. They’re of course really good for each other, but taking some space to grow and figure themselves out as individuals, not just halves of a couple, will be good (and healthy!) for them as they head into early adulthood. Turning down (or not even going for) the opportunities that most excite them could stifle their growth and lead to resentment.

Uni is so expensive in terms of money and the commitment/effort you need to put in, why would you not want to put that into somewhere you love and is your first choice?

Vic

that’s absolutely not even how uni works in the UK anyway? classes and modules are extremely different from uni to uni (which is why picking the right university is such an ordeal), and settling in and doing one year somewhere then just moving elsewhere would be an EXTREME hassle, financially, administratively and emotionally. all the other reasons why aside, Charlie wouldn’t want that for Nick any more than Nick should want that for himself. they’re kids and deserve to try things out for themselves. the crux of this plot line isn’t and shouldn’t be that they can’t be apart temporarily, it’s how they can and will work through it together.

Ahhh , I am going to guess you are not from the UK, which is totally fine obvs. But UK university is so different to US. You do your 3 years somewhere on one course and you stick there. It is extremely rare for someone to transfer universities halfway through the course. From what I know about American universities you do not pick a specific subject in your first year, but at UK universities you do. So it doesn’t quite work that way x

In a normal US 4-year undergraduate program, especially right out of High School, you'll start your General Education courses (Math, Science, at least one Computer based class) to fulfill the basic foundation that most regionally accredited Universities require for graduation. This is why most colleges and Universities allow your major to be "Undeclared" up through the end of your Sophomore year (year 2). After that, you typically have to declare a major and you'll begin work on whatever you want to specialize (English, Human Resources, Social Work, Comp Sci, etc.) at which point transferring becomes much more difficult because you'll need to research Unis that have similar coursework for those majors. It's not impossible, but it's difficult. For example: I started college in High School with dual-credit courses at my local community college (1 Math required course, 1 History Requirement, and 1 Communications). After graduating, I had to have those credits transferred to The University of Pittsburgh, then I transferred to Valencia College in Florida to finish my 2nd year and finally I transferred to The University of Central FL to focus on my area of study and stayed there. Because our University system has set requirements established by the Accreditation System, it's pretty easy to hop around schools across the country for the first 2 years (4 semesters) after that, you'd better make up your mind and stick with it. Your system sounds like most Uni students have already decided on what they want to pursue and stay in one place. Do they typically start at 18 there? Because that seems awfully quick to decide on a permanent area of study. Or are there options to try other "majors" once you're in the specific Uni? Is this why "gap years" are a thing there?
