Just want to put this out there for those of you who are in the process of looking at colleges/universities (especially in the U.S. - I can't speak to the system in other countries). You do NOT need to know what you want to study or what you want to do for work when you are applying or looking at schools! There are plenty of universities that encourage you to explore and find what you find value and fulfillment in. No shame at all in being undeclared. Honestly I wish I had started college with less of an idea, because I put myself into an academic box that I ended up not liking as much as I thought I would. That said, make sure you look at schools that are more open to exploration because some schools are more geared toward students who do know what they want to study. In the end, it's all about fit rather than reputation. And sometimes the best fit is not going to college/university yet or at all, and that is perfectly wonderful as well!

When I was Nick's age I decided I wanted to be an opera singer and studied at the conservatory until I decided to be a writer. Then the Army stepped in in 1966 and made up my mind for me for a number of years. When I got out I decided I was going to be a historian and managed to go all the way through a master's degree in Chinese history and part of a PhD. Then I dropped out and went into business for 57 years. Decisions, decisions, decisions. I did wind up publishing 57 books most of which take place in China. The rest are mostly gay themed books many coming of age. It's very hard to decide your entire life when you're 17.

VERY curious how Nick ended up choosing to teach. I always wondered if he ever considered rugby as a profession...Elle's choice mskes sense and so does Tara's. I genuinely thought law was her future for some reason, even with her passion for dance.

In the UK, you study your ‘major’ from day one of your degree and it’s v difficult to switch what you want to do

I went to college and studied psychology meaning to graduate early, then the year I was meant to graduate, I added on a theatre degree because I loved and missed it so much. Love that you’re showing that we don’t have to be certain right away :)

I would love to know how Elle chose her name. Especially if it relates to Legally Blonde!

Really enjoying this university storyline so far. Alice, I really appreciated the way you dealt with university stuff in Radio Silence - honestly, I wish I’d read something like that when I was a teenager, vs consuming all that content that made it seem like all that mattered was going to the “best” university/college possible, and then you’d be set for life. It’s not a game for you to win, it’s a decision that will influence the rest of your life - and what might look best on the outside and to other people may not be best for you!

I relate to Nick, I'm a lawyer now but I still "ummm" about it .. lmao

I'm more than 20 years into an engineering career, and I still haven't actually decided what I want to do when I grow up. Probably something else? It's ridiculous to expect people to decide when they're barely an adult or not quite an adult and haven't even started university or lived on their own before.

It’s okay Nick, I changed my major 7 times while in uni, don’t use my (literature) degree at all and am now going back to college for nursing! You don’t have to have it all figured out. Life is about exploring and chasing your passions!
