Just wondering though...isn't Darcy in their year? I'm assuming cuz she isn't here that she's not planning on going to uni? Hope we'll get some insight as to what her plans are post graduation...

salem

she’s in their year but i don’t think she plans on going to uni

Hey Alice, I have a question! Why aren't any of the parents on this tour? In America at least, college tours are typically a family event, not something you do with your friends. If you do happen to go with a friend, there's usually still a parent there. So it's interesting to me that the gang are going on this trip without adults! Especially since they're driving a lot and staying in hotels, and they're still minors.

poor nick, he really wanted to like kent best but when you go to the right uni for you it just clicks :/

College visits can be anything but fun; the whole notion of leaving familiar surroundings (both home and school) was itself profoundly unsettling for me, even without the pressure of choosing what I wanted to do for the next 40 years -- and where to spend the next 4. Add to all that the whole Charlie factor and I'm not surprised Nick's being quiet. He badly needs a hug, but the person he needs it from most isn't there. (This is one of the very few scenarios that makes me glad I didn't come out til after graduating.)

Just joined as a patron today! Just wanted to say you have been one of the biggest inspirations for me over the last year and I am so happy to be able to support you in your career. For my birthday my mom just got me your entire collection of novels including heartstopper volumes 1-4. Its so cool to see your art being drawn in real time and I hope the best for you in the rest of 2023!

I'm feeling Nick's anxiety of not having Charlie there with him, or the thought of the next stage of his life without Charlie close by.

To be honest that's a good question 😂 I actually hadn't thought about the fact that none of them are 18 so booking hotels might actually be a bit tricky... I didn't want any parents on the trip as I wanted this to be bonding time for the girls and Nick! Anyway I think we'll just have to roll with it 😂

For what it’s worth, I went on my college trips on my own! I’d take a train to the school and stay overnight in a dorm room. I know you have everything scripted out, but maybe Nick, Tara, and Elle can do the same. I didn’t have close friends that I could go with, and I can’t remember why my parents didn’t go with me. They might have been too busy with work, or thought that it would be a good way for me to become more independent.

Cliff

The dorm room stays were arranged by the schools, of course! I wasn’t bold enough to try to find unplanned accommodations!

I went on my own without parents to some of mine - and some I just applied to without ever going to look at them! Some of them other people's parents drove a group of us, so there was no real pattern to it.

If they have access to online check in, no parents technically needed…everything can be done ahead of time and they could stroll on by reception with their keyless entry (depending on the modernity of their hotel)

Alice, you are incredibleat drawing the most complex and nuanced human emotions, Im so touched by the way your loose relaxed style captures feelings so exactly, you must spend a lot of time observing humans in all their wild glory, thank you so so so so much, as always

Joni

I’m excited to see what really clicks for Nick when he visits Leeds (at least I think that’s going to happen) 😊

Chloe

Thank you so much for your response Alice!!! I love your comics and books so much and it's an honor to hear back from you ❤️ and thank you to everyone else who weighed in! Based on everyone's comments, it doesn't seem like the trip without parents is too much of a stretch! And I think it will be a perfect opportunity for bonding between Nick, Tara, and Elle, which I'm really excited for! 😊

Let's pretend Sarah is good friends with the CEO of Travelodge and did her a favour haha 😄 although I recently went to premier inn and did the check in alone not once was I asked for ID or my age I think its quite easy to book a hotel in these lower end hotels now and just slip through

I went on trips with my friends at 16 and 17 by ourselves.. We stayed in youth hostels, which are a scheme for exactly that, safe, low cost networks for young people to have some independance and go on adventures. I cant imagine affording a hotel at that age, and to be honest, its probably another cultural difference with the usa compared to other commonwealth countries, where egalitarian opportunities are offered right from the start and recognised as valuable for young peoples development. The usa is quite different from that. 💕
