This month, we make a bit of an odd selection for our secular bonus episode... the first round of the Democratic Primary Debates. Did Kamala Harris earn our love and respect? Did Tim Ryan discover projectile perspiration? Did Eli have a special Marianne Williamson font? You can find all the answers and more in this (last) month's secular bonus episode...

I came back to listen to this after going to the massive Harris rally in DC. Times really have changed, haven't they

Matt

Not really, no. I hoped she was going to win, but at the same time I couldn’t forget the weird nonsense responses and inability to defend her record from the 2020 primaries.

Chuck Ellis

Wow, this hits different in 2025.

BT Dubs

Yeah most of that about her hasn't held up well, has it.

Steve A.

unexpected but welcome!

Taru Tikkanen

Ah, June bonus in July. It's like Christmas, but earlier.

Aya Sakurai

Wow, this is new! You all cringe and laugh at Williamson but... Wasn't Trump exactly that kind of joke candidate when he started campaigning? Just saying.

Dean A. Batha

Thanks for this. I love Liz Warren.

Dean A. Batha

Note to Noah: It's K-AH-mala, not Camel-ah

Inquiring Raven

I loved this, but I really have to point out something here about the first night. While he has definitely earned his spot on the stage Julian Castro shouldn't earn your spot as most fluent Spanish speaker. Castro didn't learn it as a child and even said as much in interviews back in 2010. Major Pete, Beto, and Booker all have a stronger foundation in the language than Castro. Otherwise good episode. https://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/09/magazine/09Mayor-t.html?_r=1&pagewanted=all Article speaking to Castro's language skills down in the lower third.

Making fun of a woman’s “shrill” voice—that’s never held a woman back from success before...

Westin Williamson

No. Williamson is not a legitimate fucking candidate. Just saying.

Foxx Navarro

Ngl I’m don’t see all the Warren love? I mean I understand it but there are too many red flags in her per and her rhetoric for me to endorse her (mostly on Israel and her realllly wanting tou to know she’s a capitalist) Also I’ll defend Betos Spanish, he spoke Spanish as a child and grew up at the border. His Spanish is actually really good, his answers on the other hand....

Grant Cosper

Does Eli think Ron Howard has hair?

Andrew Nielsen

I'm kinda wishy washy on Warren. On the one hand, she's temperamentally the exact kind of candidate I want. Academic, policy inclined, offers detailed solutions, good at articulating them. But I'm also not a fan of a lot of her actual policies, since a lot of them seem progressive but ultimately not effective solutions to the problems they are trying to address. Like opposing the TPP, or a 15$ minimum wage in the entire US (that's a good minimum wage in a lot of the country, but is likely to hurt rural and poor regions), her corporate tax hikes (from what I've read the economic consensus is that they are a less efficient tax that tends to get pushed onto consumers or workers, and capital gains taxes are a better way to get the wealthy to pay) or her wealth tax. Granted, my politics are probably fairly different from the PIAT crew. I do like some of her other policies though, her views on healthcare seem good, her views on expanding immigration are good, her views on providing foreign aid to central America seems good. She's good in my view, but not ideal.

Nocturnal Emission

Firstly, Marianne Williamson got on stage because Chapo Trap House (you know, Bernie Bros) did a flex and were able to mobilise enough support to get her on stage. Secondly, incrementalist policies regarding healthcare pushes your medicare to compete with private options. Great, you've now provided an avenue for its privatisation to ensure "equal competition" in the marketspace. The concept is to remove it, but your smarter than most people so would have seen that obvious play... right? Lastly, why are you all over Elizabeth Warren? She was a goddamn republican till the 90's. She specifically jumped ship because of their support of monopolies... That's all. Not the racism or sexism in policies, just how they treated capitalism. Trump has another 4 years at this rate. How hard are you ready to fight for her?

Nocturnal Emission

Also, why did you not bring up the Hickenlooper is a fucking black-pilled psychopath that drank a quart of fracking fluid to show how non-toxic it is? And the fact he watched DeepThroat in a cinema with his mother?

Markus D

THAT'S WHO THIS "CAMELA" HE KEEPS TALKING ABOUT IS!

OmgItsRae

I still cannot understand why people love Kamala Harris.

E

*laughs in anarchist* (the socialist kind not the weirdo ancap type)

Michelle C

She’s my preferred candidate but I’m a “cop” so...

OmgItsRae

What do you mean by "cop"?

E

Ayy comrade!

VermanShane

would love one of the libertarian debate but I think that might be too much suffering even for this show.

MementoMori

Where are you guys getting that Tulsi is pro-war and joke that she really isn't an ally the LGBT community? Yes, she's a veteran, but that doesn't mean she likes war. She's literally running an anti-interventionist campaign as one of her key focuses because she saw firsthand the horrors of war and that she and many others were duped into a war on lies made to only benefit the military industrial complex and other super wealthy individuals who wont see a day of battle themselves. She wants to prevent that from happening again by not escalating with other countries like Iran or meddling with other countries governments with coups like in Venezuela. And yes, when she was younger, she was brought up by her super religious parents to be anti-LGBT, but she has legitimately grown past that, and apologized adamantly for such remarks of her youth. In fact, ever since becoming a politician, all policies related to LGBT issues she's put forward or supported have given her a 100% positive rating from the Human Rights Campaign. If there's a major Democrat you want to lob those kinds of criticisms at, try Hillary Clinton, who was one of the final holdouts to support LGBT issues in 2012/2013. Is Tulsi a perfect candidate? No, she has her flaws just like everyone else. But I really hate to see people harp away on her regarding this false or severely outdated information the mainstream media constantly puts out to smear her or other legitimately progressive politicians, even when she's not my top pick in this race.

GodAwful

We tried to make fun of everyone equally. Your mileage may vary.

Tyler Pascal Kampstra

Yessss, I was eagerly anticipating Noah's reaction to Marianne Williamson. "Harnessing love for political purposes," ya'll! lol

Nataly Schwartz

This was hilarious and brilliant. You guys are fucking awesome!

dylan vane

I would agree with you pretty much 100%, save that what their platforms establish is an opening bargaining position. I think she's learned how not to do the typical Democratic thing of bargaining against herself.

dylan vane

I swear on my not-soul and lack-of-hope-in-salvation that I will pledge at the goddamn $100 level if you promise me that you'll cover all the debates as bonus content. Or regular content. Just please more of this.

Carlos Marchi

I tried to watch the debate. I really did. But Beto's awful spanish made me cringe so hard that I gave up. Good luck on the next election! You'll need it (damn... USA politics is a mess nowadays).

uisge

Can’t say I liked this as a patron bonus for GAM. One less secular movie review isn’t an equal exchange for an extended Skepticrat episode IMAO.

The Best Cat

As an old dude from the Valley - I found Beto's Spanish cringe-worthy AF. Powered through anyway though - for Texas politics he's as edgy as it gets. Good format for the full debates next year.

Two votes!!
