This week, we explore that moment in M. Night's career where we all started to suspect he wasn't coming back.

I've been waiting for them to get back to Mmknight (this not a typo, I can only hear his name this way since The Happening episode).

The metadata for this download lists it as "The Scathing Atheist - Ether Or Edition" in the google play music android app.

I haven't seen this movie either. It took me a long time to ironically watch The Happening and I accidentally watched The Visit.... I think finally, with this perspective and everyone's giggles echoing in my brain, I can finally do it. Bring it M. Night.

It's funny, this movie was part of my finally giving up on the god idea as a teenager. My mom loved it because "mysterious ways" and jesus and shit, but I couldn't stop thinking "So god murdered an indiscriminate number of people with an alien invasion (never mind all the implications of that) so one disaffected former pastor could realize the medical and psychological ailments that torture his family daily were actually an advantage in this one, extremely specific circumstance? Good fucking plan, god."

This episode entertained a whole lot more than the movie did back when I watched it

My controversial opinion: The aliens dissolving in water isn't dumb or unscientific. They're ALIENS. They don't operate by our rules. How do you know the things we saw walking around were the actual aliens? They could have been probes made of meat. And you don't need probes to survive very long. We didn't build Voyager I with landing gear, after all. Or the aliens might have a hive mind, so they have disposable bodies that appear to "die" to us single body organisms. (Did Shaymalan have any of this in mind? Nah, it's a bad movie. But it would hardly be the first time a dumb movie accidentally included a really cool concept.)

Kristjan Wager

But it isn't. A cool concept, that is

Scott David Hamilton

The concept that aliens would interact with us in ways that would seem inexplicable and illogical because they have completely different assumptions about fundamental concepts than we do? It was cool enough to get a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score and eight Oscar noms. (The least realistic part of Arrival, I'd argue, is that the main characters can translate the aliens' language at all.)

I saw this in a drive in theater, and remember a mic boom scooting around at the top of the frame in the scene where the three characters were on a couch wearing tinfoil hats.

Denise Huston

Did you just say AW BEANS?! That is fuckin adorable.

The funniest thing about the water weakness for me was there was a great run of the Justice League comic in the 90s where Earth was invaded by White Martians. The JLA make a public announcement that the aliens were weak to fire and that the people should use whatever they can to hold them off until the heroes can get to there. So, a comic in the mid 90s did this better.

Nice. Another guy was commenting about this one in the comment section of World War Z, and I added my buck-fifty. I meant to shoot the guys an email to suggest this as a regular episode, but I hadn't gotten to it yet. And then here it just pops up. I imagine that they pay attention to the comments and thought it was a good idea.

I was long since an atheist, since I sorted all of that shit out in my head around the age of 10 or 11. Raised Catholic, but I have vague memories from back in kindergarten or first grade, wondering if the adults really believed this stuff, or if they just liked to do this stuff because they were fans of mythology, like the Greek and Norse mythology that I had read by that age. I was presented with the problem-of-other-gods quandary before the brainwashing could get a solid hold. The stuff in this movie is pathetically similar to the lame crap that I get from religious people about signs that their god has given them to prove that he's real. It's just amazing how desperate people are to justify something that they were brainwashed into in childhood. And yeah, I had similar thoughts to yours, when I first saw this. So, Yahweh had the protagonist's wife get cut in half, so she could give him a cryptic message about whacking an alien in the head with a baseball bat, as she was slowly bleeding out. Why didn't any of the families who got slaughtered by the aliens deserve a similar message and way out? What kind of joker do they worship? They have the nerve to call him benevolent, never mind omni-. If someone wants to argue for an asshole creator-god who likes tormenting his creations to make himself feel better, I would have to switch my philosophical stance on atheism to the default position, rather than the positive disbelief of their omni-benevolent god-concept. The world matches up a bit better with a trickster, asshole god running things.

So, re: all the questions about Old Man Boards, uhm. I’m married to a much older man. Our second date was me helping him move a pickup truck full of “antique lumber” to move it to a different storage place. We currently have 5 different very large stashes of lumber, in various places. He has been known to stop the car if he sees a good board by the side of the road or in a construction dumpster. So yeah, can confirm: Old Man Lumber hardcore exists.

My favorite part of this movie I learned after the fact: the gymnast-on-the-roof lines towards the beginning were Mnight's way of mocking the scientific method/skepticism. The characters try to logically deduce could have gotten on the roof and get to a ridiculously wrong answer. Take that, atheists!

Looming Dementia

I'm listening through this again. I just caught the mention of the movie, Spaced Invaders. That is such an amazing movie. It's funny how so many cheesy 80's sci-fi movies just can't be put on any worst-of list for this show. They're just too good at what they're going for. Critters is another of those. Hell, Roger Ebert gave it 3 out of 4 stars, and there are plenty of movies that he said are good movies, which he only gave 2 stars.

Any chance you'll do Shamylan's Devil?

Okay, I might have some insight into how this guy keeps making movies. He filmed part of his last movie in my boyfriend's comic book store, and was super friendly and cheerful. A year or so later, Mnight called to personally invite him and his employees to the premier, and had remembered everybody's names. So my theory that he's just so incredibly nice and upbeat that people just love working for him, even though his movies are terrible...

I wish Abigail Breslin, the little girl, had more to do. Talk about a one dimensional character....sheesh. She was such a dynamic little actress back then and has only gotten better.
