Sometimes "weed out" classes have that structured grading setup. It's designed to drop the GPAs of 'weaker' students among those that already had a high enough GPA to get admitted to the program. As you move higher up into specialized programs there are only so many seats per course (unlike a 300+ seat auditorium Freshman class) and weed-out classes are a way of ensuring those numbers don't get over/under crowded.

Hate those classes. If overcrowding is a problem, there are ways to fix it that dont penalize students who actually learn the material well enough to actually get a good grade. I had a prof who on day one told us he would fail the bottom half of the class because he saw himself as some kind of gatekeeper.

On route to my PhD, I had some first year graduate school courses with that "bell curve" grading structure. It's an old school 'weeding' method that, thankfully, has been done away with in most places. In our program the students who "failed" had the option to move to a master degree only track or drop out.

Unpopular opinion maybe, but as a prof of biology, those intro bio classes for pre-meds that are "weed out" classes are a bit of a mercy too. So many 18 year old are pre-med because they don't know any other options and liked biology. Much better they figure out they can't/don't want to be pre-med as a sophomore than a senior.

So excited for this one! I loved the movie concept back in the day, and was so disappointed the movie just kind of went in a lame pseudo horror direction. My thought "yeah, lets do that for real and see what happens!" aaaaaaand I recall my father being very worried about my young instincts.

I thought that the big deal Eli made out of Oliver Platt was weird because he's been in a lot of shlock that's considered worse than Flatliners. And maybe it's just my personal experience, but I literally hadn't thought of him in years before this episode.
