The regular episode is gonna be up a little later than usual this week, so we figured this one could tide you over. Enjoy...

Matt Eldritch

THANK YOU! I was hoping that either you people or the God Awful Movies podcast were gonna tear this movie a new one!

J

I don't know how far ahead of time you guys pick the movies you see each week, but you should DEFINITELY see Redeeming Love at the theater. I don't want to spoil too much, but it's a Pinnacle Peak Pictures (i.e. PureFlix) movie that basically attempts to combine a completely anodyne Christian romance story with an R-rated exploitation flick. I think it only got away with a PG-13 BECAUSE it's a Christian movie; otherwise, there's NO chance this wouldn't have been given an R by the MPAA. It's tonally all over the place, batshit, and GLORIOUS trash. PLEASE go see this one for the brief period of time it's still in theaters.

Time Til Heath Quit (TTHQ) Index: 10 seconds.

Jess Morgan

I don't know if anyone is willing to go easy on Maddie for this, but she did know fairly soon how badly this would come off, and she was very upset about the anticipated backlash. Sia talked her into it because they have a WEIRD relationship.

Andrew Dean

Hey so “Ebo” sounds reeeeeal close to a slur for indigenous Australians 😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬

Markus D

I'm happy to hear that Eli looked up what Sia's first language was when he heard her lyrics because I similarly looked up where she was from when I first figured out what some of her songs said and was shocked that it was Australia and not like... a distant village in Russia where English is spoken of only in whispers.

Mees Hilgersom

You mentioned in passing being interested in looking into the mind of an authistic person. While I can't speek for all authistic persons, as an aspie Mind My Mind (https://www.mindmymind.nl/) represented how I think fairly well. For a fun and not serious one I think The Accountant is ok.

Markus D

I feel like this movie reveals more about Sia than she intended it to.

Matt Eldritch

Sorry, I meant to say the We Hate Movies podcast.

VQD

Longtime neurodivergent listener. Thank you so much for covering this. I died laughing multiple times in the first five minutes. You've 100% done it right.

K

So I feel like you could have justified doing this as a regular episode. Zu did go to AA. And it’s bad science.

Celestial Crafter

The fact that the creator of ABA is also the creator of conversion therapy, and that it (ABA) is the only accepted therapy for autism covered by insurance in the USA, makes the shit in this video so much more evil.

Anastasia Marsden

I came here to write the exact same thing. I really thought the movie used the slur word as a name and thought Sia MUST have known better. Awful.

Jacob

Fun fact, Sia reused the big pants for another music video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1Pg1RguhqxY she basically reused a bunch of props from her tour for the music video portions. I love her music but cannot in any way justify this movie or her reaction to backlash.

Whitty

Especially when you say it in Eli's Sia voice. Cos it wasn't problematic enough.

Katie Reece

As an autistic, thank you for doing this POS. May I suggest "The Fanatic" as one to have a look at? John Travolta's character isn't mentioned to be autistic or diagnosed with anything, but I would argue it's an even worse portrayal of someone who is ND and/or mentally ill, because it's an adult playing the role.

Phoenix Hauser

if you try to crush me in a meltdown i will beat you senseless. i will however accept supportive hugs offered.

Ada the Muscle Witch

Not a single person made a "crushing it 😎" reference and I don't know what to do with this disappointment

Stormy Decisis

The description of ABA is really, really wrong! There are a lot of myths about ABA and I'm sorry to say that you guys reinforced a lot of them. It's not about causing suffering. It's about teaching new skills with reinforcement. Punishment is almost never used, and when it is, it's things like time out. There are some legitimate controversies, like how much we should reward eye contact (it really helps with language learning in young children...if you don't get it when you're young, though, picking it up later is less helpful). But there's never been "crushing" or anything like it as part of ABA. Some of your listeners might need to decide whether to pursue this treatment and they deserve to have accurate information about it, or at least not to have false info presented. Some of the complaints are true! For example, sometimes ABA does discourage stimming (by rewarding the child when they don't stim, not by punishing when they do), but it's not because ABA just hates stimming. Some autistic kids love stimming so much that they ignore everything else when they stim. ABA will usually reward those kids for not stimming during a teaching session because some of them won't learn anything if they stim instead. ABA isn't anti-stimming in general, just trying to get the kid to stop long enough that they can learn a useful skill,. Often there's a misunderstanding about what is being done or why, but that's a legitimate discussion, charges that ABA was founded with the intent of causing pain. It wasn't. The claims made in this episode would be like saying that doctors invented chemo because they hated cancer patients.

Just to ad to what Stormy Decisis wrote. I would like to point out that the “founders” of conversion therapy were psychoanalysts, like Freud, in the beginning of the 20th century about half a century before behavioral science emerged as a discipline. Also there is no one founder of ABA. However, B. F. Skinner is often seen as the father of modern behavioral science, and he was very much against the use of punishment in the treatment of people. Also ABA therapies and programs are not exclusively used with individuals with asd. They can also be used with people with mild to sever learning disabilities or people with no particular disabilities. If you want to know what ABA really looks like look up Morningside academy and direct instruction for example. The representation of applied behavioral analysis is in this episode is both misleading and inaccurate. I have studied, designed and used ABA treatments in my studies and work and I am a head of department in a specialized residence for individuals with autism, so I kinda know what I’m talking about here and that’s not something that happens every day.

Bobby Tropicana

Ugh, AWFUL film, I hope they review it one day.

Bobby Tropicana

This movie sounds so awful that even my podcast her refused to download the entire episode.

La-femme-fetal

I’ve worked with people who experience intellectual or developmental disabilities my whole adult life and yikes, have I been terrified to watch this movie. This was the best way I could have experienced it. Now I’ll never have to watch it myself. Thanks guys!

Uriah Jackson

One good thing came out of this movie: I'll never forget how to spell "fuchsia" again, because fuch Sia.

Benjamin Turner

Damn, I regret recommending Dear Evan Hansen for your bonus ep. This movie seems...uh, way fucking worse.

Markus D

I can't imagine that there are many PiaT fans who would know about Dear Evan Hansen and not about this just by... similar interests, but if you haven't watched Jenny Nicholson's video on the movie, you MUST.

Dreamcrusher

I stand by my recommendation of Cosmic. It's reverse Armageddon starring Bruce Willis. It must be reviewed because it's so fucking stupid.

Nick Charles

Just got halfway through this one. I love you guys, particularly because you're so science-minded and evidence-based. Thus, it was stunning to hear you all blow it so terribly in regards to what ABA is and is not. You did a real disservice to people in need of treatment and spread misinformation in a way that you typically deride others for doing. Still love you, but you might want to come back and do some repair on this one. I'd be happy to link you to the evidence if you'd like.

Nick Charles

No, I wouldn't post that, because I would never promote an opinion piece that misrepresents the weight of the empirical evidence. If I did that, people might accuse me of cherry picking and motivated reasoning. I'm not Ray Comfort!

Nathaniel Arnold

As an autistic person who heard all about this movie when the whole controversy emerged, I'm super happy you guys watched this so I never have to.
