This week, we owe Cara an apology. We kind of owe everyone an apology. But more than that, this movie owes US an apology.

Thank you. I did and it was horrifying.

I paid $20 to rent this movie on VOD because I hate myself. It was hilariously bad and I'm excited to listen to this episode and laugh along with you.

Did Noah and Eli forget an arch of D&D Minis is called "Trouble in Pair O'dice"?

Shout out to all the Christian apologists I argued with in the comments section of the YouTube trailer for this. Thanks for an afternoon of very depressed laughter!

So this is the Manos, Hands of Fate episode? Cool.

As a person who read this book unironically waaaaaay back when it was first published, it feels good to have someone else point out how bad this whole story is.

Lisorael

This one sent me into a furious rant. I look forward to its shredding.

Holy shit. By the standards of this movie, would Christians think that Killing Stalking is a romance? Well, obviously not, 'cause the characters involved are both men and THAT'S ICKY!

Kristine VanRaalte

Women are definitely sexist. My step mother told me that I wasn't pretty enough to marry rich and that was why I had to get a one night a week bussing job ay 15.

I want famous people crackers, too…

2026-09-08 12:00 Clearly none of them have read a Harlequin romance novel. Twenty something years ago my ex mother in law talked me into reading some of her collection (she had probably 100 romance novels). The main female was almost always kidnapped and rapped. If the she didn't fall in love with the kidnapper she fell in love with her rescuer, after he rapped her too.

This is definitely one of those times where I'm glad you watch the movies so that we don't have to.

I bet the woman that wrote this story really fucking loves Fancy by Reba McEntire.

Heath isn't here and y'all are like seven minutes into talking about how traumatizing the movie is. I'm starting to think that you just don't us to listen to the episode.

No one recognized McSteamy from Grey’s Anatomy?

Internalized misogyny for the win! It cracks me up when the folks on this podcast come across something meant for Christian women, primarily middle-aged Christian moms, and ask, "Who is this for?" It's for women who've had misogyny so ingrained in them for 50 years that being purchased by a handsome man and literally saved by his loved for her seems romantic. Most men just have one thing on their minds, it's our job to keep them from raping us, and if we fail, well, we should be grateful if some kind man decides to give us worth as human beings by owning us. 🤬

Also, I feel deeply for the delightful Cara. Please don't stop being on GAM because of this film!

This, sadly. My mother spent years reading romance novels and far too many of them were about the rough man who "savagely claims" her or the powerful man who saves her and "takes his reward".

I like to think "Magowan" was just how the author insisted McGowan was pronounced.

My mother and sisters have a library of hundreds of romance novels. They carefully pick the “Christian” romance novels that still have all the fetish and promiscuous sex but it’s not by the woman’s choice and she comes to Jesus in the end. And then they can imagine how it must be to be that main character. To be used and lusted after. To be a sexual dynamo who’s worldly and oh so sinfully…. Oh! But uh, you know, how inspiring it is that Jesus still loves her and accepts her (and let’s her get away with all of it) in the end and she lives happily ever after with a man who’s totally cool with it.

Pretty sure this is based on that one Old Testament prophet who God told to marry a prostitute to make a point

I grew up homeschooled on Douglas Wilson the extremist pastor in Idaho and you are 100% right The gaslighting written right into the Genesis story - Eve set up to take the fall for a man who knew better and threw her under the bus and ruined the rest of her life The more Christians read the Bible, the more they think people have ordained purposes, the more normal they think it is for women to be stuck bearing children and supporting men I don’t think Ruth should have had to sleep with her second cousin to get off of public assistance But if you read your Bible as a believer with your community reinforcing your belief and helping you ignore the red flags, then you learn over time how to love that story And you learn how to give Ruth and Boaz the benefit of the doubt on whether they had premarital sex or not And that’s the same benefit of the doubt they give to ministers who have unimaginable power and influence over their own children

Do the readers of these books have rape fantasies? Is shoehorning Jesus into their kink just how they feel better about it? Or do they genuinely think that rape is somehow acceptable behavior?

Dexter

@Mark I dated a guy briefly who had fantasies of being raped because he grew up believing that being gay was what would send him to hell. But he wanted those experiences so the only way he could reconcile that in his young pre-teen mind was if it wasn’t by choice. If he were to have those experiences he desired, but it wasn’t by his choice, then god couldn’t be mad at him for it.

I know this a bit old but I just wanna mention in the books there’s a subplot of a 16 year old girl that’s trying to seduce a grown ass man and they end up getting married. And it’s considered a cute romance. Also the love interest for the 16 YEAR OLD raped the main character.
