Re: autism and schizophrenia differential diagnosis. I am absolutely not suggesting this movie knew this fact, but until the 1960s or so, there was a diagnosis of "childhood schizophrenia" that was basically what they called autism. It referred to a condition marked by severe language and communication deficit, restricted and repetitive behavior, and lack of social connection. Children with it had autism symptoms and grew up to have autism, not adult schizophrenia. They did not have schizophrenia symptoms like delusions and hallucinations. So in an 80yo, the man actually would've gotten a childhood schizophrenia diagnosis that would later be changed to an autism diagnosis.

Also, autism and schizophrenia have somewhat similar symptoms. People with schizophrenia can have flat affect which is basically not showing any emotion, which is what people associate with people with autism. Social skills are affect in both as well

True, and some people who are correctly diagnosed with autism as children grow up to develop schizophrenia as adults. But back in the 50s, what they called "childhood schizophrenia" was almost certainly autism, and not schizophrenia.

There was an episode of OG Unsolved Mysteries that featured a missing person that was autistic, but was being treated as schizophrenic and thus poorly managed. It doesn't end happily, he was never found, and that happened as late as the 80s, so it was definitely A Thing.
