This week, we discover Russian propaganda cartoons for Eastern Orthodoxy and wonder where they've been all our lives.

Peter Graham

February Bonus release date?

Stella

Oh boy, finally an Eastern Orthodox movie! I was raised in the Greek Orthodox church and I've been waiting for one to pop up on your show! Should be a fun time

Mark H

Top Gun is NAVY propaganda, dammit!

Troublemaker Jake

Any plans to do the other 2 movies in the trilogy?

Michael Usocchi

Eli, I am 100% borrowing "it's like 9/11 and blowjobs."

Damion Damaske

I kinda appreciated how much more of a stinker Pooh was in the Soviet ones, lol. But ymmv, of course.

In normal democratic countries the opening just means "Hey, this movie was financed by the Ministry of Culture from public funds, enjoy". I know that a public institution funding arts and culture is unimaginable in the USA, but it's a thing. But of course Russia is not a normal or democratic country, so Ministry of Culture's stamp of approval just means you get Christian Shrek.

I mean... I think that's much less to the spirit of the books were Pooh is generally not all that smart but pretty much always means well. Also, it really throws me off how much Pooh looks like a tanuki in that. BUT, I do still think that the Soviet Winnie the Pooh is really fun, and for some reason it gives me similar vibes to the anime Patalliro.

BT

This feels like a missed opportunity to further push Cara into madness.

Damion Damaske

To be fair, he wasn't really mean, just a little more mischievous. But as I said, ymmv. And I haven't heard of that anime, I'll check it out!

Jeffrey Cowell

I got rotoscoped Muppet vibes, but the Muppets were also Marionettes. Team America essentially.

Ryan Lebrecht

Took me a while but the "Polygon" is supposed to be SHAPE, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, NATO's HQ in Mons Belgium.

Catboyslim

The Commies had some awesome cartoons like Sour Cream Village, Masha, Mister Twister Telephone Minister, and their version of Bugs Bunny with the greaser bad wolf, and the Pig with the 6 cup bikini top. Without the red bayonet at their throats, it has come to this? Crazy.

Katie Stienmetz

So now I have a song stuck in my head, The B-52s "Rock Lobster" is now, and will always be Golf Lobster in my head 😆

Uriah Jackson

If I knew magic was a thing and a smoke snake told me to abjure I'd assume they meant using a protective spell, perils of being a longtime D&D player.

Chelsea Goulton

Talking about roshambo - My first thought was, "I don't remember them two-on-one kicking each other in the nuts..." Thus reaffirming how South Park has forever corrupted my world view :D

Colin

Omg, I am actually a bonsai professional, and I was laughing so hard at the bonsai tree references in this episode.

"Patalliro!" is a bit obscure, as I don't think it's been officially brought over to any English-speaking country, but I'm fairly certain that the whole original anime run has been fan-subbed and you can find it on various not-completely-legal anime streaming sites. I believe it was the first BL anime to exist (back in 1982) though it's very much a somewhat-surreal comedy that makes fun of the Boy's Love and Shojo genres while partaking in them. It's definitely aimed at an older audience than Winnie the Pooh considering that it's got like... sexual jokes and stuff like that, it's just that that Pooh reminded me of the title character in his attitude and the way he spoke. Also, one of the main characters in "Patalliro!" is a guy named Jack Barbarosa Bancoran who is basically just gay femme James Bond, and he's AMAZING.

The occasional bit of transcendental animation surrounded by bullshit is peak Russian stuff as far as I can tell - there’s a lot of “I don’t care, what is the absolute bare minimum for Russia” mixed with “Yuri over there is a goddamn maniac about his trees/sculptures/castles/whatever and is going to have the best one you’ve ever seen in any country”. Edit: also I finally got around to watching the same YouTube video that provided this - Kuprianovich’s actual last name is Savenkov, the whole thing about saying a first name and then a middle name (a patronymic) is the Russian equivalent of Mr. Garza or Mrs. Thompson or whatever. Edit again: I think the racism bazaar was aimed at central Asian people - Tajiks, Uzbeks, etc.
