We're spoiling the Patrons this week with an early drop on the bonus episode plus a behemoth "extended edition" version of this week's show dropping a day early.Normally we try to keep GAM under two hours, and after 30 different cuts we did manage to whittle the main release down to 1:59:45, but there was so much good shit on the cutting room floor that we decided to give patrons the whole thing. Enjoy!

You guys are the best

Kespos

You know how to love me

Jesse Ozog

Please, I listen to Knowledge Fight, give me those 3 hour episodes!

James

I listen all night at work so you can’t make an episode too long for me.

Sidewinder

Please don't ever apologize for making an episode TOO long. I cycle through old GAMs on a regular basis because it's like my comfort podcast.

Mark H

You’re not in Joe Rogan or Dan Carlin territory, so I think you’re good for now

Chris Batchelor

Which Charly? 1969, 2002, 2007? EDIT: NVM it's 2002 and on youtube. The 1969 one looks awesome, I'm DLing now.

Adam Pope

please be the Flowers for Algernon adaptation!!!

Matthew Lester

Why stop at two and a half hours? Give me the entire recording session uncut.

Caramiadiva

I always want more and cant get enough.

Roger

Please continue to release extended editions. Those 2.5 hours flew by. Loved it!

Another Craig

Can confirm: I had that hatchet coming

Stella

What a nice surprise - - I was just thinking about how much I was looking forward to this one! 😀

Turanga Leela

I’m glad this was not the Flowers for Algernon story

kaizerlith

Jeez the male lead gives Clay Walsh from Old Fashioned a run for his money. And not sure if I missed it but I even re-listened to the start and still don't get why was Charly in Utah and going on a date right away with him?

James Robbins

We've been saying "tight as a dish" incorrectly all this time!

Markus Nävergård

we must remake this movie, but the opposite, where this woman shows the closed in mormon how good life is and he turn atheist and they are happy

a gay in indiana oh my god oh no help

I did though. I just clicked on the movie I saw because who the fuck spells it like Charly, and I’m like, weird choice guys, I’m very depressed now, and then….I realized it was still Mormon movie month

Religion *is* Politics

It’s horrifying to think of dying with small kids & its fucking horrifying to think how all the Mormons & all the Christians have been brainwashed by these movies to walk through their whole lives fantasizing about what would happen if their spouse died & it was all planned all along

Karaoke LEGEND Cosmo Blues

Oh mah gadd, … this movie was SO sad! I’m glad you didn’t make Cara watch this. The Latter-Day Lesbians were PERFECT for this one.😉😏

Kristine VanRaalte

The grandma reminds me of my Gramma who used to see a cute guy on TV and say, "He can park his shoes under my bed anytime."

Matt Eldritch

I think I read this book in either my senior year of middle school or sometime in High School. I love you guys, but I'm gonna be skipping this one. Way too ssad and triggering for me.

Turanga Leela

It’s not the Flowers for Algernon adaption, it’s a really misogynistic Mormon movie

Turanga Leela

Yeah, I wasn’t going to listen to it either because I’m the parent of a person with intellectual disabilities and Flowers for Algernon is just too triggering, no matter how bad the actual movie might be. This “Charly” doesn’t even show up on the first page of Google.

Derek Giffin

“Mark ate ass” sounds like a Bible verse

Unofficial_Opinion

Thank for the Ani throw at the end! I keep trying to educate the younger generation about her.

Brendan Horn

Welp Im already up to episode 15 of the LDL podcast. What have you done?!

Annika Gunn

This movie taught me that a women's only use is as an incubator. Once the man has an heir, the woman is rendered superfluous and should be gotten rid of as soon as possible. AKA, the author actually hates women.

KayJayO

a few years ago I found this podcast through the Singles Ward episode (as an exmo all these mormon movies were our “pre-approved” sunday movies so I saw them MANY times) and I remember the guys being so confused by a random scene of a guy crying over a book and laughing my ass off because they didn’t GET it. Charly was my sister’s favorite book growing up and everyone freaked out about it. And now here we are, the wheel has come full circle.

TenaciousB

What do you mean, I am totally of the younger generation! (Goes back to listening to my cassette tape of Not So Soft).

AK

Please bring Mary and Shelley back! They were amazing!

Starshark

This was more than a GAM episode. It was so enlightening to hear the experiences of people who have to go through this shit. This has occurred in previous Mormon Movie Months, of course, but this one really seemed to have nailed it. It'd be interesting if you could ever find someone who escaped Scientology and was willing to tell their story in a similar fashion. I can think of a few reasons why that might be hard, but it would be interesting to hear if it ever happened.

Starshark

Also, I just read Esther 2 (sp?) from the Book of Mormon, and I could NOT stop laughing. The writing is just risible.

Starshark

Ether. It's called Ether. I certainly feel etherized.

Heather P

Well, this episode is how I found out that the hash brown casserole I make every thanksgiving is actually “funeral potatoes”. And I can confirm, they are incredible.

Uriah Jackson

There's a version around here that are called "party potatoes", and yeah they're pretty good.

I'll be totally honest—unless there's another statue that nobody takes pictures of, I don't know what you're talking about when it comes to the Space Jesus. Maybe it's because I grew up marginally Catholic, but that looks like a super normal statue of White Jesus. And he's just wearing a toga with one nipple out; he's hardly a provocative, sexy Jesus. You don't get a lot of "sexy" versions, but you do at least see many nearly-nude crucifixion scenes. If you want a legit "homoerotic Jesus" I'd recommend Michaelangelo's "Risen Christ", the first version of which has full scrotum visibility on a mature, hunky Yeshua.

Markus D

Out of curiosity, is Flowers for Algernon triggering because it's sad or is it offensive in some way? It's been a long time since I read it so I don't remember details. Edit: Having looked it up, I realize that I've only ever read the short story and probably don't have much context for the novel, namely how the women are depicted in it which, from reviews, makes it feel more dated than the overall premise would imply.

Markus D

Shelley and Mary from the Latter-Day Lesbian podcast, if you hadn't figured it out before now.

Amanda McGuirt

God I have intrusive thoughts about dying while my dog is still alive and him thinking I abandoned him. Fuck this movie so hard.
