This week, Eli gets noticeably closer to his goal of breaking Cara once and for all.

a terrifying thought. if this is what Eli does to someone he consider a friend, i shudder to think what he´d do to someone he really dislikes

Dahak

Mint mobile ad at the beginning on the Patreon version?

Sarah Normal

Was wondering about that too.

Someday Sera

might be getting fixed, I can't see the upload anymore

Gmork

9/11

Another Craig

Cara's a trooper. I can't imagine how frustrating it must have been for an actual professional to listen to a movie's worth of these deluded ding-dongs scaring people away from actual help

Markus Nävergård

i do not know what that is and i am to terrified to google it

tsukiouji

Best worst "that fucking ending song was stuck in my head, so I listened to Yakko's World to get it out"

Fluidkaos

And the earthquake that happened during the hurricane.

Lauren W

Well, this hit hard. I had a counselor ask if my intrusive thoughts could be me displaying psychic abilities. Every mental health professional I've seen since is surprised and then horrified when that's my first vetting qiestion.

Ilan Woll

Noah missed it. Happens on rare occasion, but it was only a 15 second read

Ads at the beginning, and while we are at it can we get rid of the Ads at the end? Not much of an ad free experience with ads just playing at the end instead.

Think how much further psychological and psychiatric care would be if the Catholic Church didn't insist on abusing people with psychoses.

Because it came up twice, and because cognitive psych is my specialty: with repressed/recovered memories, this is an incredibly area. Memory is relatively easy to influence, and overall, is not nearly as accurate as we think it is. Recovered memories that are anything but spontaneous should always be highly suspect, but there are some case studies of people who claim spontaneous recovery and then physical evidence and paper trails were found to back the memory. However, we can't study it due to the trigger variable being trauma, so we will never know for sure. It appears to be incredibly rare, but in some cases, possibly real phenomenon, probably related to the memory content and the person's cognitive functioning at the time of the trauma. The big problem is that many forty-two states have either in current law or precedence cases established that recovered memory have some evidencial value. Either is reseting that statute of limitations, being actual evidence, or being enough to reopen a closed case. So the legal systems is utilizing what the science doesn't back. The evidence tells us 99.9% of these cases are such that we have no way of demonstrating the memory wasn't manipulated or implanted in some way. Even the cases that appear to be valid, we can't say why any of it happened and if the memory was truly repressed. There is no way the legal system should treat this as "real" in an evidence way.

They add those at the end because many listeners don't want to miss out on the shenanigans they do in the adds. There's a lot of PIAT memes and running gags that start in ads (like the Wooldasher-Mizel being a heel to Heath)

James Russell

Just downloaded it, ad is still there.

Michael Duchek

They put them on the end because people requested them. Some people who paid for Patreon access still want to hear the adds. Just don't listen.

Whitty

Not just that, she turn the early to mid section into great science outreach.

Whitty

I've listened to the "nut-milk" bit 3 times now. Each time I flip flop on whether nut-milk was a slur against mental illness (in the voice of the barista) or a slur against the barista.

Dahak

Yeah, they have a corrected version up now. Its not a big deal of course, just one of those minor oops moments.

Tamylyn

or all three

Christian Galitzine

Omg I just realized that you guys talked about Gabor Mate on this episode! Before he was super well known, he came to my tiny middle of nowhere town to give a talk which I, for some reason, attended. He was a total prick and I seemed to be the only person in the audience who noticed. It is deliciously validating getting to hear other people finally call him out on his bullshit.

RJ Blue

Man, I know it almost destroyed Cara, but I’m SO glad you guys tackled this topic. I studied psychology in uni and am currently figuring out grad school, but because I’m a sucker for anything that appeals to my sense of justice, the more leftie-coded anti-psychiatry stuff (like Mad In America) has really been getting in my head. Even with the obvious silly, “my hallucinations are actually psychic powers” stuff aside, I end up going in circles about whether my career will end up harming people. Hearing all of you (especially Cara) so easily address the bullshit in this movie was both fun and reassuring, so I appreciate you all suffering through it on our behalf!

Where did Wooldasher-Mizel start? 'Cause it's been referenced outside the ads now and I have no idea of what it is, so I'd like some context.

Viridian-Flow

It started as an ad for Allbirds shoes. They started with an "All the birds? But how will we catch them all?" kind of joke with the Treerunner shoes, then they released the Wooldasher shoes and I think a special edition or like version 2 of those came out as the Wooldasher Mizel? Anyway the joke was that Heath always said the name of the shoes and when he said the name Wooldasher Mizel it'd summon a fae creature that got annoyed because they were right in the middle of dinner or something similar, and over time each time they had an ad he'd get more and more annoyed at getting constantly summoned by Heath so he started cursing him and turning him into trees etc.

Someday Sera

Cara's little aside about why anti-depressants have a self harm warning was super interesting, I'd always wondered about that.

Someday Sera

just a mistake, they re-uploaded it later without it.
