Wow guys... this movie was NOTHING like we expected!

After so many of you recommended it to us after our Welcome to Derry reactions, we honestly thought we were getting into some kind of horror movie or thriller. Instead, we got one of the most emotional and unforgettable stories we've ever watched.

I'll be honest, I'm usually not a fan of prison movies. They tend to make me uncomfortable, and it's not a genre I normally enjoy. But The Shawshank Redemption completely surprised me. The story, the characters, the twists... everything was so much bigger and deeper than we expected.

Rachel especially connected with this movie. After we finished watching, she couldn't stop talking about it! 😂 I genuinely think she's going to rewatch it on her own because she loved it that much. Watching Andy's journey and seeing how everything came together in the end was incredibly satisfying.

One thing we're curious about: how does this connect to Stephen King's other stories? The only connection we caught was that Shawshank Prison was supposedly the prison where Ronnie's father was meant to be sent in IT. Did we miss any other references or connections?

Sorry if you felt misled, but really the only two connections are the welcome to Derry of being threatened to go to Shawshank. And the other connection is all Stephen kings books/films exist in the same world. Other than that it's just a good standalone film

Dr sleep will give you what your missing Julie. More direct connection to what was explored in Derry

My favorite Stephen King stories are the ones that do not contain supernatural evil, but only good old fashioned human evil. This is one of them, and the other is The Green Mile.

Other than the fact that both It and Shawshank were written by King and both stories take place in Maine, there's no real connection, at least not in the original literary context of the stories. The IT: WTD show likely included the Shawshank reference as a fun Easter egg for fans and a way to connect the two stories on screen, since the idea of a King shared universe has gained more traction over the years. The original King story—Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption—was one of four novellas published as 'Different Seasons' in 1982. These stories were a departure from King's usual horror/supernatural storytelling, focusing instead on more straight-forward human stories, showcasing his versatility as a writer and storyteller. Three of the four novellas would be adapted into films, with Shawshank and 'Stand By Me' (the published title was 'The Body') both receiving Oscar nominations. I highly recommend watching 'Stand By Me' at some point. I have not watched the 'Castle Rock' television series, but I believe the Shawshank prison is a featured location in that show as well. I'm hoping you guys watch 'Doctor Sleep,' the sequel to 'The Shining.' It's fantastic. I do recommend watching the director's cut version of the film if you have access to it.

I feel dumb having forgetten that Stephan king did the book for this too. Idk if you recognized the actors Julie but the guy who played Red is Morgan Freeman who was Lucis Fox in Dark Knight movies and the main prison guard was played by Clancy Brown who voices Mr Krabs in Spongebob and he was Punisher's military officer in Daredevil S2

Jim

Yeah. If there’s one thing about clacy brown, you can never trust him. Wasn’t he also in a couple episodes of the flash?

Narutoanime16

He was Yea ! He was also a military general in that in S1 then got mind controlled by Grodd

I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. This was based on a short story written by Steven king. He tends to write his books/stories as though they could all exist in the same universe. so sometimes characters and places will pop up or be mentioned in different, seemingly unconnected stories. He also places a lot of his stories in the Maine/New England region in the United States. I really could tell how much Rachel connected with it. The website IMDB.com considers it to be the best movie of all time. I think a good argument can be made for that.
