The terrace above the lake was warm under the afternoon sun, the water a bright blue against the mountains. Anna had not expected the wings. They had come with the thaw the same way Elsa’s had—soft white feathers instead of black, warm against her back when she moved. She had left the formal dresses in the wardrobe and put on white instead: a sheer embroidered bodysuit with a small bow at the bust, matching briefs edged in lace, and pale stockings with scalloped tops. The wings stayed. So did the freckles.

She was on the stone ledge when he found her, kneeling with one hand braced on the tiles and the other resting on her thigh. The sheer panel over her hip had shifted. She did not fix it. One wing was half-spread; the other rested along the rail. Sunlight caught the sheen on her skin and the small pink bow at the center of the bodysuit. She looked back over her shoulder, blue eyes bright, the corner of her mouth lifted.

“The castle is too quiet,” she said, voice light. “I wanted the sun on me without the layers.”

He stepped closer. The wings shifted, feathers brushing the stone. Anna adjusted her weight, the lace at her hip sliding, and let one hand leave the tiles so she could rest it on the ledge beside her knee.

“The wings are new,” she added, almost idle. “They come and go. Today they stayed.” She tilted her head, the braid slipping over her shoulder. “If you’re going to stand there, at least come where I can reach you. The water is right there, and I have no intention of putting the dress back on.”

Outside, the lake lapped the rocks below the terrace. On the stone, she stayed where she was—knees apart, wings open just enough to make room—and waited for him to take the loose end of the strap at her hip.
