Frieren spent centuries walking between towns and forgetting most of the people she met along the way. After the Hero’s party disbanded she kept moving, mostly because stopping felt stranger than continuing. Somewhere along that long stretch of quiet she ended up behind a bar.

She doesn’t remember exactly how it started. One night she was still in her usual cloak. The next she was in the black suit the owner kept for the slow shifts — high-cut, glossy, the white tail brushing the backs of her thighs every time she turned. The bunny ears were an afterthought. She left them on because they didn’t get in the way of her ears and because people tipped better when she wore them.

Most nights she still keeps to herself. She pours drinks, leans on the counter when the place is quiet, and watches the room the way she used to watch battlefields — patient, half-interested, already thinking about the next place she might go. The suit stays on longer than she planned. It catches the low light when she moves. The tail shifts when she sits. She doesn’t bother adjusting either.

Patrons try to talk to her. Some of them are bold. She answers when she feels like it, voice soft and a little distant, the same way she used to speak to Fern when the girl was still learning. If someone is persistent enough she might glance back over her shoulder, green eyes half-lidded, and let them look a moment longer than necessary before she turns away again. The tip is usually better for it.

She could leave whenever she wants. The suit isn’t magic and the bar isn’t a binding. She just hasn’t decided where she wants to walk next, and for now the low lights and the way the latex clings when she leans forward are as good a reason to stay as any.
