Jane came to the jungle to document the local flora and map the river system. The expedition was supposed to be orderly — notebooks, specimen jars, a proper camp. That lasted until the second week, when the rains set in and the trails turned to mud.

She stopped worrying about staying dry somewhere around the fourth day. The beige shirt clung no matter how many times she wrung it out, and the shorts became more trouble than they were worth once they were soaked through. After a while she stopped fighting it. The rain was warm. The leaves kept most of the wind off. And once her clothes were already plastered to her skin and slipping lower every time she moved, there didn’t seem to be much point in fixing them.

She still takes notes when she can. She still knows which plants are useful and which ones will blister her hands. But the rest of the time she moves through the undergrowth the way the place wants her to — shirt half-open, shorts riding low or tugged down when they get in the way, boots caked in mud, hair stuck to her neck. The jungle doesn’t care how she looks. Neither does she, anymore.

Most evenings she finds a stretch of path or a low rock and just sits in the rain for a while. The water runs over her skin. Her clothes stay wherever they land. And when she glances back over her shoulder, there’s no urgency in it. She’s already decided she’s not going back to camp tonight.
