Abberant and Abnormal mean the same thing, English dub went with Abnormal which honestly works better imo. This ain't the fault of the original studio, just the localizers. There's a few other weird decisions too. Honestly though the Titan noises are why I can't watch the dub for this show. Everything else is fine but the titans sound so much scarier in Japanese lol

So far we have Abberant/Abnormal, which are typical type titans that act very weird, think the one that jumped, the crawler, stuff like that. Ones that are weird but still fairly normal. Then we have "intelligent" titans, which so far Armin has decided is the Female, Armored, Colossal, and Eren (21:40) which are a subclass of abberant but Armin doesnt want to group them together.

Armin means that Titans' only goal is to eat humans. And we're killed in the process. But their goal was never to kill a human JUST to kill. But he saw this female titan kill a scout who tried to attack her, as if she was defending herself, and she didn't eat him afterwards. She just flung him off and killed him. Then she sprinted forward. This is how Armin realises she is an intelligent titan (because she was intelligent enough to protect herself from being attacked and kill the attacker). Also colossal titan is intelligent because it always kicks off the gate in order to allow a passage for the titans to come in and eat humans. Also remember how it destroyed the canons on the wall because it knew they were there to kill titans?

There are a couple other things that have been censored more discretely. The girl doing CPR on Franz - in the manga, it's clear that Franz is just a torso. He's missing his lower half entirely. Which is why Armin asks her to please stop and freaks out so bad.

One thing about Hulu - it used to have some issues with Season 2. It randomly cut like 60% of the intro theme song (maybe just for the dub?), and iirc was missing an episode entirely (maybe 11?) Not sure if this is still the case bc I haven't paid for Hulu in a while, but just a heads up. Also for some reason the Crunchyroll subtitles improve from Season 2 onward. I guess Season 1 had a different team doing it or something. Last thing - some other comments have mentioned it, but there are 3 OVAs (like optional episodes that don't fit into a season) that could be watched in between Season 1 and Season 2. They aren't strictly necessary to follow the story, but they help provide some more context. They are: * Ilse's Notebook (side story from the manga, Survey Corps/Scout Regiment backstory) * No Regrets part 1 & part 2 (Levi backstory)

You aren't meant to understand everything the literal millisecond it's on screen. Often it's answered relatively soon after it's posed. Just have patience lad, it will all make sense eventually. it doesn’t matter a TON in this case, but i would phrase comments like these differently. this is basically an action mystery show and explaining/confirming how things work kinda gets rid of some of the mystery. what i mean by this is that sometimes, the character’s suspicions are wrong, but as a first time viewer, you’re meant to be following along with the characters’ best guesses. so i think you should phrase info like this not in terms of how things work but rather in terms of how characters currently suspect they work at this point in the story

goated reaction as always bro, it’s so interesting to see what you’re thinking. it’s bringing me back to all the different theories i had the first time i watched this show. i don’t think you’re missing as much as you might be worried about. you’re supposed to be confused. off the top of my head: you already got this i think, but armin was intentionally lying to save jean by making it sound like the female titan accidentally killed eren when she wiped out the right flank. then after this exchange, she turns and runs directly toward eren’s position. you were confused by this and you’re supposed to be. armin is also confused. also bear in mind that the characters don’t all know the same stuff you do. you were confused why eren didn’t know if the female titan was intelligent or aberrant, since some of the other characters had already established she was intelligent, but eren had barely seen her for a few seconds at that point. he hadn’t observed her doing clearly intelligent stuff. or you were confused when jean asked if the mission was really worth losing so many lives, since they had captured the female titan at that point, but jean didn’t know they had successfully captured her. all in all though, like people have already been saying, you’re supposed to be confused. some of the stuff you keep pausing like 15 seconds before it’s explained 😂 most stuff though is just supposed to be mysterious right now. think of this show like an action/mystery. there are going to be tons of blanks you don’t understand. most of the characters don’t understand anything either, and one of the major strengths of this show imo is putting you in the perspectives of what the characters feel. to the people in this world, the entire world is terrifying and confusing and brutal and no one really understands what is going on. so if you feel some of that same confusion, that’s the point. you’re not dumb for not knowing what’s going on lol armin is a genius and he’s confused too

nah it's much better he does this because he'll see what happens and have a better understanding of the show regardless, we have the hindsight because a lot of us have watched the show multiple times there's a small minority that understood everything on their first watch. I think it's better he try to decipher what's happening rather than blindly watch the show and let it be explained to him because he'll watch it through anyway. Some stuff you did forget (like half the characters on the show). Also you thought you were just hit with a sudden "Oh there's other titans with humans inside them!". However if you look back on ep14 when Erwin first met Eren, Erwin said that the Collosal and Armored are believed to be the same as Eren. So that kind of gave the first hint. It's okay to forget things though since it's a lot, but luckily you have us to remind you when you do forget. 😘 Also EVERY question WILL be answered asp. Secondly, this sub vs dub is probably jarring you. If you're overthinking it, trust me just don't, and continue watching it in whatever you want to watch it in. As someone who has watched both, I feel like some things are better in sub and some are better in dub. People are saying it's harder to understand in sub but I personally think it's easier because sometimes the dub uses complex Oxford level English and you may not catch things unless you watch it with CC, but that's just me. Either way sub is totally fine. Also I'm in love with you.

I will have to highly disagree with you. The ability to pause and read through something again defeats your point. Another thing to add is that not everything is meant to be understood at this point in the show. Regardless, I have watched this show MANY times in sub with new watchers and not a single one of them was as lost as Verticile. Not that he is dumb, but it seems that he's trying to over analyze and get to answers too quick and gets lost. Every new viewer I have gone through this show with just sit and pay attention and the subtitles are no problem. Some people are just more adept than others. Reading and listening based learning is completely and utterly subjective and to say that auditory is easier is just a massive over simplification. Some people learn better from reading books and materials. Some people have to watch or listen to lectures. Some people do both. Just let him watch the show and figure it out when he is intended to figure it out.

I've watched this show in subbed many times with many different people over the years. No one I know has ever had this much trouble understanding the show. Sub is objectively better for AOT but Verticile has some kind of weird learning handicap. As much as I don't like dubbed, he may benefit from the dub better. Very long reply ahead as this is a subject that’s always fascinated me😂 especially when it comes to this series. I think you are actually reinforcing my point more than disproving it. Saying he can pause and reread does not defeat what I said. It proves that subs require more from the viewer in a show like this. If you have to stop, reread, and replay dialogue to fully process what is being said, that means there is an added layer of work that simply is not there with dub. That is especially relevant in Attack on Titan, where the show is constantly throwing important dialogue, visual clues, foreshadowing, and character reactions at you all at once. And this is where context matters. We are not talking about an experienced anime fan casually watching in sub. We are talking about a reactor who is new to anime, watching a very dense series for the first time, while also trying to comment, theorize, and engage an audience in real time. That is already a split attention situation before subtitles even enter the picture. So yes, hearing the dialogue in his native language can absolutely make it easier for him to follow the story, stay visually engaged, and catch more on a first watch. Also, I never said every question he has means he is missing something because of subs. Obviously Attack on Titan intentionally withholds information. That is part of the show. But there is a difference between mysteries the story wants you to sit with and basic details slipping by because your attention is divided between reading text and watching the scene. Those are not the same thing. Your personal experience watching it with other people also is not really proof of a universal rule. Different viewers process information differently. Some people are naturally better at reading subtitles while absorbing visual storytelling at the same time. Some are not. Some can do both easily. That is exactly why I said subs are not for everyone. So when you say some people are more adept than others, you are kind of landing on my point anyway. And to be clear, I am not arguing that sub is bad. I already said the Japanese performances are slightly stronger. I am saying that for this specific type of viewer, in this specific type of show, dub is the more accessible option. That is not an insult to sub watchers. It is just acknowledging that accessibility and preference are not the same thing. So no, I do not think it is an oversimplification to say auditory processing can help some people more in a detail heavy series. If anything, pretending subtitles are equally effortless for everybody is the real oversimplification.

Just like you were able to see so much of his teeth because the lips were all dried up already.. About Aberrants: Some translation use the word "abnormal" instead. So, basically, aberrants are titans that don't just go where the most people are and behave "normally" like you would expect. Remember the one that ate Thomas in the episode where Eren lost his leg? That one was an aberrant, too, because he just jumped around aimlessly and snatched Thomas instead of walking around and just grabbing whoever is close. About that Sub vs Dub Nonsense: Give the guy a breather. I don't wanna see him lose his enjoyment for the show because we can't stop bickering! About not getting everything and focusing on small details that might be unimportant: I think we all might have been overanalyzing at some point in the show, don't worry. It's all part of the process. For example: Figuring out the difference between normal titans, aberrants, and intellgent ones - that's something the protagonists don't even know themselves, so the author kinda lets us find out the difference along the way together with our heroes. We're at the same level of knowledge as they are, perhaps a tiny bit less. Armored Titan: The one that tanked the canons because of his armor ;D Intelligent Titans: We know Eren is intelligent and a "human in the body of a titan" because when he shifts, he is in the neck of a titan body. Remember the episode when the Collossal returned? Instead of going for random people, he went straight for the canons atop the wall before destroying the gate - something a "sentient" being with intelligence would do. That's how they know the Collossal must be like Eren, too. The Armored always appears together with the Colossal and went straight for the gates, too, so they assume he is intelligent, too. That Female one? Went straight for the gear and just killed Nes instead of eating him. charred bones: They burned the corpses to avoid an epidemic. To be clear and I know I have to be mega late, Marco was eated by a titan, bitten in half. The anime censored the bitten off part of his body and made it look burnt, that's when Jean found Marco. When he later talks about the charred bones, its because Marco's body had been cremated with the rest of the dead squad members.

Erwin didn't specifically know the female titan was going to go for Eren. He just deduced that since eren has this power, it's possible others do aswell. When that person killed sawney and bean he was suspicious of eren's classmates so he creepily asked eren something about that in a non obvious way. He assumed that since someone was doing something to harm humanity that they would do something about humanity's greatest asset (eren), so he fed fake information of eren's whereabouts in the formation to everyone he didn't trust so they couldn't find him, or if they tried he'd know where they attacked first and could know which squad attacked with the false information.

You're supposed to not know what is going on - because that was the point of them all being given different orders. There's a traitor. They have to find out who. You don't want to overanalyze anime right away, it's totally a lost cause, if the writer was a sharp one. That's part of the magic, really. Don't think too hard immediately - let the thought stew for a while, and odds are you'll find out - that's where this being a cartoon actually comes in handy. It's meant to be serious, yes, but you shouldn't go too deep down the rabbit hole until you're done watching and still have questions - it's unpredictable as fuck, haha. Not that I don't understand why you have questions. You're supposed to, 100%. It makes it all the more epic. The reason Armin concludes what he does when they're all on horseback, is because he noticed 1. Eren is a human, who is also a Titan - and 2. They can retain their intelligence, and 3. they instinctively know he's different, for whatever reason, and are drawn to him. They also display tactical capability. That's just Armin being "the smart guy". Also, Jean saying "charred bones" is because they literally burn the corpses and he went and picked one up... and honestly, horses at a full gallop are very fast. They can't do it as long as the anime shows tho. They're still crazy fast.

True, but when this was released, there were stricter laws about violence and gore in anime - so some things they can't show, like a mutilated corpse - so they blackened the scene. I understand why he thought Marco was burnt from the start. Censorship ruins everything. Especially in an anime as violent as this. Japan has their own internal struggle still ongoing, regarding censorship, much like America and other "western" nations. None of that crap really helps though - the problems they're trying to solve by hiding things - have nothing to do with animation or entertainment. It's basically just a bunch of boomers and a handful of millennials who don't understand anything (I'm a millennial, for the record, so I get to say this) trying to censor things for the younger generations because they don't understand the problems they're having irl. ...in a way, those people are largely the problem. Not to say there aren't cool boomers and millennials out there... but if they weren't a part of something, they usually can't comprehend it. Then they find themselves in a position to make rules on things they never had anything to do with.

that's true - but remember that he's new to anime... a lot of people don't take to it that quickly. It's sort of a different form, a different style of storytelling and entertainment in general. Give him a while to marinate in all this - 1 or 2 more anime, he'll probably be a lot sharper to what the writers are doing. He kinda already is, by late May. At first it seems like it's all over the place - and it technically is - but it's all meant to build something greater. He already got better intuition toward it after just Death Note (which I wasn't a fan of) and then this + JJK so far. That's probably a good place to be at.

At least for the good anime out there. He's already catching on to how it works. Sometimes, you just don't need to know, until you need to know. Maybe fun to think about, tho. The details come in so fast compared to usual entertainment (for the western world) that it's not that easy to keep up with. I've already watched this - and rewatched tons of other anime, so I already expect it - but... when you're new, you're new. That's a good thing too - because he's having fun with it. He's making quick progress. I've tried to get lots of people into anime - and lots of them could not even do it - and this is the most likely reason. I even used this anime as a starting point. It makes me sad when they're too frustrated to keep watching. Glad Verti wasn't. It's a big payoff once you start to love it. ....then, they just start to call you a "weeb" because they don't "get it" and you tell them to "wait a few more episodes" or something, hahaha. That's the way it goes I guess. I stopped caring a long time ago. I honestly wouldn't give it up for the world at this point. I'm decades in. I can be a weeb at this point, with 0 shame.
