Keith Shadis has one of the most underrated and heartbreaking endings in Attack on Titan. It hits even harder when you remember his flashback episode, "Bystander." His entire life was defined by the belief that he wasn't special. He compared himself to people like Erwin and Grisha and convinced himself that he was someone destined to stand on the sidelines while extraordinary people changed the world. In the end, he dies believing that's exactly what he'll be: a bystander. He stays behind with Magath to destroy the Marleyan ship, fully aware that no one will probably ever know what he did. The Alliance survives because of his sacrifice, yet the people he saved will never know his name. But that's the beautiful irony... Keith was never a bystander. Attack on Titan dismantles the idea that being "special" means being famous, remembered, or recognized. But sometimes the people who change the world the most are the ones whose names are never spoken again. Keith spent his life believing he had to become someone extraordinary to matter, but his final act proved that his worth was never determined by recognition. It was shown in the choice he made when nobody was watching. Shadis will never get the recognition he spent his life longing for, yet he finally becomes the very person he wished to be. His ending becomes even more powerful when contrasted with Magath's. The only person who truly knows what Keith did is Magath, and the only person who truly sees how much Magath changed is Keith. Yet both take that understanding to their graves. And it is us, as the viewer to keep it with us. Magath's tragedy is that the Warriors will never know that the children he once sent into war for Marley will never learn that in the end, Magath no longer saw them as soldiers or weapons, but as children who deserved a normal life. After a lifetime of forcing them to carry the weight of a world they never created, his final wish was simply that they could have lived a life they deserved. And that's a message that extends far beyond Attack on Titan. Children should never be forced to inherit the burdens of adults—whether through war, political and geopolitical conflicts, oppression, hatred, segregation, or the expectations placed upon them by previous generations. These are struggles created by the world around them, yet children are often the ones forced to carry them before they ever have the chance to simply live. That is what makes Keith and Magath's endings so bittersweet. Keith died believing he was never special, while Magath died wishing the children he shaped into warriors could have experienced an ordinary life. As Carla said, "Everyone is special because they were born into this world." Keith didn't need recognition to matter, and the Warriors didn't need suffering to prove their worth. They are all valuable from the moment they existed. In the end, Keith was proud of Magath, just as we are proud of Keith, even though neither of them lived to see that their actions were understood. Both men died believing they had fallen short, yet they left behind the same hope: that the next generation could inherit a better world than the one they were given. Keith's story reminds us that being "special" was never about being remembered, while Magath's reminds us that the greatest responsibility of any generation is to ensure children are free from the burdens they never chose.

In Season 2, Bertholdt told the Scouts, "Who would want to kill people by their own choice? Who the hell would like doing this sort of thing? Do you think I wanted to do this?" At the time, it sounded like an excuse coming from the Warriors. But now we finally understand exactly what he meant. In truth, no one in their right mind wants to kill the people they once called comrades. Samuel and Daz didn't immediately pull the trigger to kill them. They shot Armin because they knew he was the collosal titan and could regenerate yet not shooting Connie (both Daz and Samuel had countless opportunities to kill Armin and Connie, yet prioritized blowing up the ship even after knowing Connie and Armin betrayed them). Both Daz and Samuel hesitated to kill them and pleaded with Connie and Armin to stop. None of them truly wants the other to die. They're all soldiers who once fought shoulder to shoulder, now standing on opposite sides because their convictions about saving the world have become irreconcilable. Small detail I love: Armin gets shot through the mouth—the source of his greatest strength. His weapon was never his fists, but his voice and ability to understand and persuade others. It's a fitting bit of symbolism. Even in the world we live in; when one side refuses to listen—or the other is never given a voice—there can never be real understanding or common ground. The only thing left is people talking past each other.... Never being heard by the other... and the cycle just continues. (Just like Marco's last words as he was betrayed by Reiner and the others. "We haven't even had a chance to talk this through") (VERT went through 3 phases of shock when Armin got shot 😂). And then there's the heartbreaking mirror with Samuel. When Niccolo asked Connie, "What was Sasha to you?" Connie answered, "Sasha was like my other half." Sasha saved Samuel during the Colossal Titan's attack. Years later, it's Connie—Sasha's "other half"—who ends up killing the very person she once saved.... And IG I'm oweing you that sloppy head

i started aot in 2017, watched season 2 as it aired, & never watched it after that, a combo of feeling burnt out by all the grief in the show (while dealing with irl loss) + losing interest before season 3 came out. i’ve always wanted to finish it but it was so daunting, & idk when i ever would have if i hadn’t subbed for death note. im so grateful & it’s been so fun to experience this story alongside u even tho sometimes waiting for drops be pure torture. i’ve been on the edge of my seat for the last 2 seasons & i can’t imagine how it’s gonna wrap up & am already missing the series :,)

you have such a massive brain. i cant believe you caught who samuel was and found exactly where he first showed up. probably the only person ever to catch that in real time and daz was the guy that historia and ymir were dragging to the cabin from the snowy mountain in season 2. also there was an end credit scene in ep 86 </3 i cannot wait to hear what ur thoughts on the ending are. after the last chapter of aot dropped back in 2021 and even when the very last episode dropped in 2023, the opinions on the ending were very 50/50. the fandom was divided into the ending haters and the ending enjoyers, it was a crazy time. i personally rlly enjoyed the ending i think u might too since youre very big brained. i love u bro

Antonin Nguyen

Even tho Eren is wrong to do that, I understand his choice. You can literally see it, since the episode he kissed Historia's hand, he has not been happy except for this moment he got drunk with strangers in Marley, and how could he ? From this moment he knew what will happened, every person he would met, every place, it will not matter, and despite that he did try to see if there was another way, but every time Marleyans were giving a choice to let Paradis people live their life, they just confirmed their unjustified hate towards them, and Eren witnessed that. The last chance he gave them, was during Tybur's speech, he even discussed it with Reiner, he genuinely wanted to listen to what Tyber had to say, just to see if the future he saw had a possibility to be wrong, but Tybur made Eren chose. People around Eren tried to give ideas, but it was only lying to themselves, it's sad but you that whatever you do hate will come back, even if you can have a brief moment of piece, even in Eren's plan it will happen eventually, but he trust his friends, he knows hate will not come from them, and since he just want them to live and be happy he made his choice. Eren life is just tragic to me, who would want to do that, but who would want their friends who you fought thru hell with, be hated and hunted by the world. Unfortunately for the world he is the one that have the power to be allowed to decide b y himself if his friends can live. "Someone who can't sacrifice anything, can never change anything! In order to overcome a monster, you must be willing to throw aside your humanity."

Dee

Attack on Titan was never actually about the giants outside the walls; it was a mirror held up to the darkest parts of the human heart. Pixis saw through the illusion from day one, predicting that human panic and division would destroy us long before a Titan ever could. The final villain wasn't an alien monster, but a product of humanity's own making: "If humanity is to die, it won't be because we were devoured by the Titans. It will be because we tore each other apart in panic and lawlessness!" -Pixis. The issue was never the Titans at all—it was always human nature. Humanity didn't destroy itself despite Eren starting the Rumbling; it destroyed itself through Eren. He is the ultimate culmination of humanity's choices. Centuries of hatred, oppression, fear, and endless cycles of violence produced the exact person who would become the world's greatest threat. "If something beyond man appeared before us as a powerful foe, mankind will take up arms together in unity." -Pixis. At the time, everyone assumed he meant the Titans. But by the end, Eren becomes that "something beyond man." The world, filled with conflict, finally unites only because it was handed a terrifying, common enemy.... Eren Yeager. King Fritz's warning was that if the world ever invaded the island and disturbed the peace of the walls, the Titans within them would be unleashed and the Rumbling would begin. And the threat itself did come to fruition—not through King Fritz himself, but through Eren's retaliation of the world. Eren is both the external monster that forces humanity together and the direct product of humanity's own cruelty. That is what makes the story so brilliant and tragically cyclical.

verti listen to the song "under the tree" after the ending, its a song that appears on the original ending with the 2 long episodes split into two but it doesnt appear on "the last attack" movie

ive began this show with you from the beginning, i liked your death note reaction (which is my fav anime) and aot was on my list alr so decided to pay patreon for the first time and watch.

David Herrera

I don't know if it has been said before but the world of AoT is a replica of ours, upside down and flipped horizontally. The paradise island is located in Madagascar and Marley is in Africa (as you can see from the map in the base), being the reason of conflicts with the near middle east and mentions of the Asian continent (or tribes). This shows also mirrors segregation and genocide similar to Hitler and WWII, there even was a plan irl by nazi Germany to deport millions of Jews to Madagascar. The more you know the more it blows your mind how this show was made and how it mirrors real life. As the quote from "Fallout" goes; "War. War never changes".

I tried to watch it a while back but I was alone and the abnormal titans in season 1 genuitely freaked me out, so I never continued it. Unfortunately I saw a lot of spoilerts online so I know how it ends, but technically this will be the first time I actually finish it.

not for AOT, but i am actually watching JJK along with you. i never had a push to really get into it until you started reacting to it so now im basically watching right before your drops

Jama

This is why I'll always be on Eren and the jeaerists' side. Our main characters are essentially killing their friends who they've been with the whole show over people who hate them. Daz and Samuel are basically in the same position our main characters were in in season 2 when they were betrayed, but in my opinion Connie and everyone are worse than Reiner and Bertholdt because, unlike them, they weren't manipulated from kids into thinking the people they were killing were devils and deserved death, but that's just my opinion

Lotus Hotel (US, EST)

I watched the first season of AOT when it aired back in 2013. Finally finished it about 2 years ago and i’ve rewatched it like 10 times since 😭 it just gets better every time

Boban Rakic

This show does spoil you somewhat, to always expect peak in other shows, let me be clear though no other anime (or any series for that matter) gets this better and better the more episodes you're in, there are some that come close, but you'll hardly get this feeling ever again when watching anime. The are, however, lots of great anime out there with better stories than most live series, so you can still get hyped, it's a shame kind of that you started from the very top, hope it doesn't impact your expectations too much.

yes they never talked all everyone did was be violent and lie abt ppl on the island no difference from real world stuff it’s a trick

About Floch When I first watched Attack on Titan, I hated Floch. After so many rewatches, however, I have come to see him as one of the most important—and most instructive—characters in the entire story. Give me a few minutes. This will be interesting. Floch is Erwin’s heir, no matter how much people may want to deny it. More than that, he is the clearest heir to the philosophy that carried the Survey Corps this far. “If you are not willing to sacrifice everything, you will never be able to change anything.” That was the spirit of Erwin’s leadership: harsh, utilitarian speeches filled with cries of Shinzou wo Sasageyo, giving everyone a purpose and the certainty that whatever stood in their way was an enemy of humanity that had to be removed. I am not condemning Erwin—who am I to do that? But we applauded this way of thinking, did we not? We cheered and cried when he led his soldiers into a suicidal charge and bought humanity one last chance at Shiganshina. Floch was there. He rode into the Beast Titan’s stones as an ordinary recruit, surrounded by soldiers ordered to surrender their lives for a victory they would never see. Everyone beside him died. Floch crawled out of that field carrying the lesson Erwin had carved into it: history does not move through clean hands, and humanity advances because someone is willing to become a devil. Perhaps Erwin’s words never stopped echoing inside him. Floch saw a commander turn despair into purpose and learned that people rarely follow reason into hell. They follow a demon who can make their deaths mean something. And here Erwin’s question returns: Who is the enemy? When the enemy was a Titan, the answer seemed easy. When it was Annie, Reiner, Bertholdt, or the Beast Titan, cruelty could still be called courage. Sacrifice could still be called heroism. We applauded the coldness, the devotion to a greater cause, the willingness to destroy anyone standing between humanity and freedom. But now that the same spirit has entered the hearts of ordinary people on Paradis—people chanting Shinzou wo Sasageyo after Premier Zackary is blown apart because they believe the military has remained passive while the world prepares to exterminate them—we suddenly want to judge it. We want to pretend this way of seeing the world came from nowhere, as though we had not cheered while the Survey Corps taught us that survival belonged to those willing to sacrifice everything. Of course, the show leads us into seeing things this way. No one watches Erwin and thinks of him as a fascist; that is not how he is presented. He may be a military commander who helped overthrow a government, but he is also Erwin—the brave commander of the Survey Corps, a man willing to sacrifice everything in pursuit of the truth. The story first places us inside his point of view and teaches us to admire the logic that drives him. Only later does it ask us to step back and see that logic more clearly, once it has passed into other hands and found a new enemy. The enemy changed, and our judgment changed with it. That may be the ugliest truth here: when fascism appears to be fighting for our side, we applaud it. It becomes courage, necessity, sacrifice. Only when it turns against us do we finally recognize it as fascism. And then there is the hardest truth Floch carries: sometimes people need a leader capable of doing what decent men cannot. He is cruel, vindictive, intoxicated by power, and frighteningly willing to turn fear into obedience. None of that should be softened. Yet while Paradis stood on the edge of extinction, Floch acted as wiser and gentler people remained trapped between impossible choices. He gave frightened soldiers a side to stand on and transformed their panic into purpose. Men like Floch are dangerous because they can save a nation and poison it with the same hand. But when the world has already chosen your grave, the person who refuses to let you be buried may not look like a hero. Sometimes he looks like Floch.

krispy

same i enjoyed Death Note long before and i love to see how people who arent involved in anime itself discover those amazing and outstanding stories. and once i saw an announcement about AOT i was like: okay, thats my go to spare time from now on. with every plot twist i was rabid with the excitement to see the Vert's reaction, like like when Reiner exposed himself as the armored, when Levi had to decide between Erwin and Armin, when Sasha got shot or any peak and devastating scene like them. unfortunatly, i wasn't careful while watching AOT for my first time and got spoiled in the middle of the second season that Eren will be THE evil. so its pleasure to see someone finding out those tiny details that eventually lead to the whole picture and genuinely living the story

Papa

69 btw

Carl Arthur Rameau

Btw neither Samuel nor Daz tried to kill them as Samuel only shot Armin knowing that his a titan, and even tho holding Connie at gun point he still let Connie closed the distance enough to overpower him. And also if u didn’t notice the map of Aot world is just ours but inverted

Thulyn

"Oh my god *gawk gawk gawk* i cant *gobble gobble* believe you found that episode *sucky sucky* with samuel *gawk gawk" Hope you're HAPPY NOW VERT, 69

Esteban

The thing is that yes 2,000 years it’s crazy but when the king fled to paradise the world had a choice and they just decided wrong and started doing the same things and wouldn’t leave them alone, so now we are supposed to be the “better” person and just kill my friends in a unnecessarily brutal way btw 🥲 for a bunch of people who hate all of mine and will asap be working to kill us when we save them, so yes I understand floch the 🐐 and I’m on the jeagerists side

Antares Bruno Montanari

Don't forget to watch the OVA's, they'll be a nice change of pace if u know what i mean

This comment is stupid lol since when did the concept of evolution and inventions stop making sense. I guess you wanted them to be eating cheeseburgers back then too since they had all the ingredients for it 😂😂😂

trifle619

Hi Vert! As we're nearing the end, some things I think you should know if you didn't already (plus a thought as someone who's watched this 5 times) 1. Notice Armin was shot in the mouth, of all places. That's for the exact same reason Eren fought him physically instead of with words. EVERYONE knows about Armin's ability to "talk his way" out of anything, or change your opinion with words, or manipulate you with words. He was shot in the mouth so he couldn't talk them out of it. 2. You moved onto episode 28 before "to be continued" showed up in ep 27. There's a post-credit scene in episode 27, you should go back and watch it! 3. The reason Titans eat humans is because somewhere within them is the person they used to be, who desires to be human again. It's wired into Titans to eat humans because they might eat one that is a titan shifter, which would turn that Titan back into a human. Exactly like what happened with Ymir when she ate Marcel 4. Eren shoved the bullet in his eye, not forehead 5. Jean's wife in his "dream life" is Mikasa. You can see she has the cheek scar that Mikasa has 6. The flashback of Eren watching his mother get killed is the same timestamp as when it happens in ep 1-- 23:13 My thought is this: I think one of the most impressive things Isayama does is take advantage of humans' ability to assume, and doubles down on this by having Armin as the story's unreliable narrator IN REAL TIME. Armin, who is missing SO MUCH context himself, yet when he opens the story with "humanity perished outside the walls", we believe him. This is only ever questioned for the first time through Erwin. Another amazing example of the audience assuming is in the first episode. We assume all of humanity is contained within these walls - wrong. We assume the colossal & armoured titans are the pure evil big bads - wrong, they're BRAINWASHED CHILDREN, one of which will later regret everything he did. We assume Titans are only Titans and people are only people - wrong. We assume the characters we follow are the obvious good guys and the Titan shifters are the obvious bad guys - wrong, in the sense it isn't anywhere near as black and white. Even when we first meet Gabi, we deem her as an awful person, when she is exactly what Eren would've been if Eren had been born in Marley. A lethal child that let trauma lead her actions and beliefs. Anyway, looking forward to the end so much! PLEASE watch the OVAs when you're done, they're on crunchyroll. Mainly No Regrets, Lost Girls (all 3 parts) and Ilse's Notebook. The others are kind of filler, but still enjoyable 😊

trifle619

You're so right! I think the biggest difference is that we never "follow" Floch as a character. When you follow a character and get an insight into their inner thoughts, it's much much easier to defend them. Like if we had followed Marley from the start and come to love the characters there, with no look into the scouts at all, it'd be much easier for us to root for them. That's why perspective is everything in this story. We never got the chance to love Floch or feel connected to him, but if the narrative had followed him up to that point, perhaps we would have

**Pasting my comment from another post** The biggest lesson I took from Attack on Titan is this: the cycle of hatred doesn't just perpetuate suffering, it actively creates the very monster that will eventually turn that hatred back upon its creators. Eren Yeager is the living proof of that truth. Consider what Eren endured from childhood: he watched his mother devoured, his comrades slaughtered, and his home reduced to rubble. Violence wasn't just something that happened to him—it became the very fabric of his existence. It was his teacher, his companion, and eventually his language. When all you've ever known is cruelty, cruelty becomes the only answer you can give. But the show's tragedy runs deeper. Eren didn't become a monster despite his suffering, he became one because of it. And yet, he was also the one who could have broken the chain. That's the painful irony. The victims of oppression, if consumed by vengeance, don't end the cycle, they become its next, most devastating link. Eren's fall is not a warning about evil people; it's a warning about what ordinary people become when pain is left unanswered and justice is denied for too long. In the end, Attack on Titan asks us not just who caused the violence, but why it continues, and whether we have the courage to answer that question before we become the very thing we swore to destroy.

André Carvalho

"How does Zeke’s plan sacrifice Historia?” You are exactly right, Verti. Zeke’s proposed solution to Paradis’s geopolitical crisis was to use the Rumbling as a genuine deterrent while the island developed its military and technology enough to survive without it. But activating the Rumbling required someone without royal blood to possess the Founding Titan and someone of royal blood to possess another of the Nine Titans, such as the Beast Titan. Historia would therefore have to inherit Zeke’s Titan very soon, since his remaining time was nearly up. When Eren’s time ran out, he would also have to pass his Titan on. And when Historia’s own thirteen years were over, she would have to be devoured by one of her children. She would also be expected to have several children so that Paradis would always have enough people of royal blood to continue this succession. Because the plan is explained so quickly, many viewers miss the true horror behind phrases such as “maintaining the Titan succession” and “sacrificing Historia and her descendants.” Eren becomes furious when the proposal is presented. It would condemn his friend and all her children to a cycle of devouring their own relatives. In that sense, Paradis would be adopting the same cruel system Marley imposed on its Warriors and the Eldians in the internment zones. For Eren, Hange, Armin, and the Survey Corps we had followed, that was unacceptable. So they decided to explore diplomacy instead. They asked the Azumabito whether Hizuru would help Paradis seek support from other nations, but while they were building the railway, they received their answer: no. Hizuru wanted to monopolize the island’s resources and had no interest in helping Paradis establish independent relations with other countries. That is when Hange decided they should travel to the continent and search for possible allies themselves. What followed was exactly what you watched: their arrival in Marley, the meeting of the Association to Protect the Subjects of Ymir, and everything that came afterward.

Nina Chan

The way i have always seen it is, when that king said he'd lock themselves away in the walls instead of concocting some story about how Marlyeans were the heroes they should have just left well enough alone because then they became the same "devils" they hated. It truly was a cycle of revenge and hatred. They ended up bullying other countries and terrorizing them for their own gain and that's why i never felt erens feelings on the matter were wrong if you were a teenager that had been given this kind of insane burden what would you do to protect the ones you love?

I started watching this show cause you reacted to it. I didn’t wait to finish it but I’ve been following along and will do so with the next one as well (and JJK). Great experience.

It’s sad that no one even knows Keith Shadis blew up the reinforcements and sank the cruiser. Everyone already left when he met Magath, and anyone who saw him died on the cruiser. It’s a tragic end for a character who’s always considered himself as a spectator of the people who were greater than him. He made the ultimate sacrifice, but no one will even know that he did

Keegan Enzor

In case no one else has pointed it out, you missed an end credit scene in Retrospective

TTCOPENDINGST

Even when they SEE Armin and Connie as traitor You can SEE is not that simple since Daz didnt want to shoot Armin in the head because he knew he Will definitively kill him this time... By the way '69'

k.

i agree

Jae

A lot of people don't pick this up, but Samuel shot Armin in the mouth, which is his strongest weapon. There is a large possibility Armin would've been able to stop them from trying to blow up the ship. However, Armin could not speak. It makes it all the more tragic when you think about it, especially since Conny had to take the life that Sasha saved in Season 1. This show has a way of writing desperation and sorrow so beautifully.

Jae

also Daz is the guy that Ymir and Historia saved I'm pretty sure.

Sean Carroll

They never asked Eren to kill the planet for them. They also truly care about Eren because they are thinking about his conscience while floch etc just want freedom which is short lived. Erens friends obviously hate what they are doing but they don’t want the world annihilated at all. Is that what the scouts fought for all these years?

Can’t wait for the movie

Heidi

Btw Isayama loved Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. Falco character is based off of Jesse Pinkman and Gabi is based of Arya Stark.

GRIME

not sure if anyone has pointed this out to you yet. but in the title cards where it shows the episode number, the background image shows boats crossing an ocean from a larger body of land to what's seemingly an island with a wall built onto it, seem familiar?

Wifish

W stew :)

Christian Sims

lowkey good idea to read the first page of the first chapter of the manga too, there's a specific difference that makes the anime version kinda less interesting

MonkeyDPeakin

It's funny how they had to nerf levi otherwise all of the plans isayama had would have been ruined cuz levi is just too strong.

Nicholas Wild

69 - Reminder that you missed the post credit scene in ep 27. Looking forward to reexperiencing the ending of this epic with you. I had the pleasure of watching the theater release of the ending and it was one of my favorite cinematic experiences of the last few years. Hope your watching experience at home is great as well.

J

I hit my PR of 315 using the rumbling song 💪🏽

Jay M

HOLY SHITTT UR LITERALLY THE GOAT

Jay M

im watching the end of season four for the first time 😳

J

God the Japanese VAs deserve everything the raw emotion coming from their screams make everything so real

Cas

I’ve watched a lot of good movies and consumed a lot of media in my life. But AOT is without a doubt the the best fictional story i’ve ever experienced. The creator Isayama eveb said that he’ll never make anything as great as attack on titan ever again. It bothers me that “normal” people won’t watch this show because it’s animated and made for children in their eyes. Truly missing out…

Aidan

starting watching the exact same way lol

luv4pink

Hajime is genuinely a genus, especially considering he wrote all ts backwards.

oT3j

He has noticed that ever since the first episode he could’ve figured out there were people beyond the walls since every episode title screen has an ocean with ships traveling across right? Just confirming he’s seen that

Heidi

I told him this he said to make sure and comment on the last upload

Liam Mceleavey

69 Is the movie just the last two episodes in one long episode then ?

Heidi

Annie and Reiners in sync transformations are so peak 😩

Shacara Broom

When you done start Hunter x Hunter

Big Dan

Im not sure i would say its the absolute best fictional story ive experienced. But its top 3 for me for sure. Honestly it could be number 1 but I'd have to think about it. I watched it for the first time between January and March this year and Ive thought about it every day since then. Ive tried to start other anime like Clannad and Code Geass (watched the first episodes of both) but I just couldnt continue them. Im convinced both of those are probably like 9 or 10 out of 10's btw and i plan on watching both still, although the 1st episode of Clannad definitely felt a bit jarring for an anime newcomer like me going from AOT to that lol, but yeah it just didnt feel right atm because of AOT still being so fixed on my mind. So thats why ive been watching this reaction series. Both to experience the story again myself and to see someone else's reaction to my favorite moments and to see their perspective on everything. Plus it helps that he's actually a good reactor lol, most are cringe or boring tbh. I do wonder what Isayama is gonna do with his career now that AOT is done. The guy is so young. I know he probably thinks he will never ever match the quality of AOT and tbh maybe hes right, its an insane standard hes set, but he shouldnt doubt himself that he can make other masterpieces in the future. I dont really know anything about manga/anime authors but to use some film directors as examples, Francis Ford Coppola probably thought how could I possibly ever match this after making The Godfather 1 and 2 (considered 2 of the best films ever), and then he went ahead and made whats considered probably the best war film ever in the same decade (Apocalypse Now). Martin Scorsese has made a career of setting ridiculous standards that he either surpasses or at leas matches (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, Wolf Of Wall Street, the guy's filmography is insaneeee lol). So yeah I do genuinely think Isayama can end up making another masterpiece that compares to AOT. Hes clearly on another level in terms of creativity and intelligence and hes so young, theres so much potential for him to become one of the best storytellers in history. Ive seen some people argue that he probably completely cleared himself out when he wrote AOT, that he used his entire essence as a writer and hes probably satisfied with the money hes made and the legacy hes achieved, but i disagree. When you're on the level that Isayama is, I just dont think its possible to ever be truly satisfied with the art youve made, or truly satisfied that its over. If he hasnt been working on anything since AOT ended then hes probably been driving himself absolutely crazy. Because when you're an elite storyteller, you make stories, thats what you do, thats what you are. And when what youve been writing for decades is finally over, surely thats gotta mess you up

Austin

Verti, you are in for a whirl of emotions.

Dustin

its the second one hes missed now. He already missed the one where hange and levi encounter piek and magath for the first time.

Cornelius Arthur

Code Geass would be absolutely your alley because it’s very similar to AOT in alot of ways

Sammie Katrina

I'm so glad you found this!! aot and verti are special

Fleurielle

Verti, please go back to the last episode of season 3. About halfway through; During the medal ceremony— I feel like you would get a kick out of the imagery of that moment.

Nalalo

RIP Keith. He thought he was a bystander his entire life unable to make a difference to the story but his last action, one he'll never see the impact of, allowed the scouts to continue the mission and has the greatest impact on humanity as it stands.

Deepraj

Damnnnnnn

Bruce Mass

After this, I'm so sure that you need to watch FMAB or Vinland Saga next

Eugene Conner

A rewatch is a must. This is a completely different show when you're an insider.

Baconstrip

Missed the post credits scene :(

Damien

It will not compare. Other anime will be fun, or cool, or interesting, or really philosophical. But nothing will compare to AOT. I wouldn't say that it ruined other anime for me, but it kind of did. Because nothing will come close to the quality of writing. Also, I started watching when I saw the Death Note reaction with the "This is Anime?" thumbnail and then the south park video because I love that damn show.

Delray Velo

The shitting your pants for 2.5 seconds is so accurate 58:01

PilotingSRN

I don't hate Mikasa, gotta preface this, but the reason people say she is one dimensional is because her entire storyline centers around Eren. If you were to take the entire series and take a drink everytime she says, "EREN!" you'd die by episode...3? lol She has no storyline besides being saved by Eren, living with Eren, protecting Eren, SCREAMING Eren, questioning Eren, chasing Eren, scolding Eren, to the point she asks Armin what to do, because Eren isn't there, and a side plot that is shown on screen...3 maybe 4 times about having family outside of Paradis, then goes back to I wont kill Eren. Her depth is hidden by all of this, because its majority of what we see rather than the real inner conflicts she has. Now, take a shot for everytime I PERSONALLY SAY EREN lol

Otniel Olivares

You can watch both movies eps in one ep instead of going to the next one. Its just on the tab selection called THE LAST ATTACK. It will also include a post-credit scene after .

Alfred Apau

I watched AOT but season 4 I missed a lot of it watch it all with you guys though

chaichai

Dont forget the post credit scenes in the movie!!!

Momo Lilya

Yes if they knew that the King wiped their memories, their view would probably change drastically. That’s why Tyber revealed the “truth” to them, it was such a big deal. They would still be persecuted most likely, but at least it wouldn’t be “these supernazis who made us suffer for 2000 years escaped to an island after the war and has a super weapon that could wipe us out at any time” type of bad.

Jose Pablo Lara

I watched Death Note and now AOT with you. Loved it... was so happy I decided to join the patreon. JJK I have watched but I am hyped to see your reaction to the next two seasons.

Granger Main

Need more likes so Vert can see dis lol

Trae Young Supremacist

w reaction as always lmao u looked stressed every episode. Imo everyone in Paradis going against Floch/their own people deserves to die. Armin, Mikasa, all of them. This show will never convince me that killing the people who wanted to genocide you is bad, and For them to kill their own people and friends to defend the people who convinced the world to help genocide them is crazy. ppl crying like Gabi and Annie doesn't move me at all because those tears don't undo what they did and they are only sad and sorry because its happening to them now. I was never a big Floch fan, but at least he was willing to fight and die for his people, which is real af. Also, the old Eldian empire was full of people that were conquered from everywhere. They were victims of King Fritz too, which makes the alliance defending the outside world make even less sense because trying to genocide eldians is literally geocoding descendants of victims.

Hassooun

If watching reaction videos counts, then i must have watched AOT about 9 times already and i still find easter eggs and parallels, I've seen multiple reaction videos on AOT and believe me this is the best!!!

Luna

Is no regrets the OVA about Levi ? If so, he already saw it ❤️

Granger Main

One detail I rarely see people talk about is how the outside world first comes to know Eren. When Eren reveals himself in Liberio, he's introduced not as "the Founding Titan" or "the Coordinate", but as "the Attack Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin)". That feels like a very deliberate choice by Isayama. After all, it's the Founding Titan that possesses the godlike power to begin the Rumbling. If Eren were meant to be defined by his power alone, this should have been the moment the world recognized him as the Founder. Instead, they called him as the "Attack Titan". The distinction is meaningful. The Founding Titan represents inherited power, bloodlines, and the ability to shape the world. The Attack Titan represents something far more dangerous: an unbreakable will to keep moving forward. The Founder gave Eren the power to change the world, but the Attack Titan's relentless drive is what pushed him to use that power. It also gives the title Shingeki no Kyojin (進撃の巨人) an entirely new meaning. The phrase is intentionally ambiguous, translating to "The Attack Titan," but also can mean "the Advancing Titan".... Just like how thousands of Collosal Titans are advancing the world flattening it. What I love most is the ambiguity this creates. It's almost impossible to separate Eren from the Titan he inherited. Did Eren give the Attack Titan its meaning? Or did the Attack Titan shape the man Eren would become? Isayama never gives a definitive answer, and I think that's intentional. The two become inseparable. That's the tragic irony of the title. The world wasn't brought to the brink because of the Founding Titan alone. The Founder made the Rumbling possible, but it was the spirit of the Attack Titan—always advancing, always moving forward—that made it inevitable. In hindsight, Shingeki no Kyojin wasn't just the name of a Titan. It was the story of the will that changed the world.

Sara Sengezer

I think you are like the best reactor I have ever seen bc you appreciate and understand the show. And with this I rewatched the show for the third time and I thing it’s amazing to make a show where you could watch it hundreds of times and not get bored bc me seeing the mikasa scene or the last minutes always get‘s me hyped up. Waiting for those specific episodes for you to react to always got me so excited. Isayama is a true mastermind of creating this masterpiece and considering he was 19 when he first started writing the manga. It’s sad that he wrote men and women equally good in the show but some jerks in the fandom don’t understand those characters like mikasa who is called ‚depented on eren‘, malecentered‘ aswell as the ppl who hate on annie bc she killed Levi’s squad but they happen to forgive reiner - like tf Gabi is the worst bc she is a depiction of (young) eren and she has great development and she is a badass but some are so sensitiv that she killed sasha eventhough they don’t even Open their mouth when You Tell them eren wants to destroy humanity. But only some fans Honestly I love mikasa she is my favorite character and she is so beautifully written Anyway I am so excited to see your reaction to the finale Some didn’t like it but hoenstly it’s the Most perfect ending Aot is a masterpiece and nothing is ever going to be created like it I think After the show is over you also watch the lost girls OVA as well as listen to some of the music and react to the openings and endings with subtitles It’s been a journey and again im so excited to see your reaction Don’t mind my Englisch im from germany and im going to visit Nördlingen soon which is the Place where the Walls are inspired from I recommend that You Watch the show again bc it’s a whole different feeling I yapped enough thank You for showing me those amazing reactions

Hassooun

Bro's got observation haki

69. i mean eren has godly powers but at the same time he is just a human being. i completely understand both sides and i think eren might be right that this is the only way because the only reason he is doing this is for his friends, but sasha died, and his reaction was like 'nothing changed, it's inevitable.' just like his reaction when hannes died. he was not laughing like what connie said, i think that's just how eren is when he is completely feeling grief or something. i always see eren as a human that can make stupid choices like we all are if we want something. genocide is wrong, but i think i can respect his decision after all that he's been through, plus he can see the future. this plan wasn't his first option to begin with that's why he tried to sympathize with the innocent people outside paradis, he was crying when he saw that kid, he tried to listen to that meeting before he left because i think that he is hoping on the last minute that those people might stop hating them. this show is so good in many ways, at this point i can accept any ending. w verti for understanding this show in first watch. im hoping u do a rewatch content that would be a first, it would be awesome.

Kate Olson

is either right or is either wrong we shall see

MISPLACED

we’ve come so far 🥹🪽

Lily Hsu

Gabi: the gun titan

Mati

Personally I feel like Eren had no other choice in order to protect his friends and people. Even though genocide is wrong.. It was either them or everyone else, cuz everyone else were already on the path to exterminate the eldians. That’s what makes it so fucked up situation for both sides

e1

5:30 i watched ts 4 times and only just realised thats mikasa in jeans day dream lmaoo the scar under her eye confirms it. funny cuz he liked her in season 1

e1

verti u so smart

Mati

I love Floch tbh. Not because everything he does is right, just the role of being the devil they need, and he portrays that very well. The fact he fought Mikasa, three titans and more as well and stood his ground is impressive. He’s a pretty misunderstood character even though his ways aren’t the most ethical

e1

1:00:01 that ost as it shows annie and reiner bruh... so fucking tuff

summonix

I'm slightly crying from seeing Keith's end again but then I see the next thumbnail after ep 28. I can't believe its almost over :c

AstraT1ger

Lets say that Sasha was the hanging thread that kept Samuel alive by saving him from falling, now that she died he fell aswell. I think the reason Eren cried in that refuge camp its because he foresaw the rumbling stepping on everyone even the refugees, there’s literally no place to hide or run from the titans, even if you’re on a boat, the intense heat they emit will melt both you and the boat, just like those soldiers. There is something that they dont say about his mother in the anime, I think only in the mangas, I dont wanna spoil so Ima say after the movie. 69 That smoosh at the end made me emotional ♥ 😏.

Jae

This is a really odd take. I can agree that Mikasa's character is solely dependent on Eren's character; they're very intertwined. However, that does not make Mikasa's character "one-dimensional." A one-dimensional character is a simple, uncomplicated fictional figure defined by a single trait, motive, or role, and by that definition, she does not fit into that. Mikasa in season 1 has had a very straightforward goal of protecting her only living family left since she watched the rest of her family die. I can argue that she probably felt indebted to Eren, which is why she goes out of her way and even risks her own life to get him back multiple times. But the more deranged Eren's character gets, the more complicated her character becomes. She deals with an incredibly heartbreaking battle of choosing the man she started this for or protecting the entire population of the world. Though it might be easy for some of us to point to the obvious answer, like I said, Mikasa is indebted and extremely grateful to Eren. She's never asked Armin what to do because Eren wasn't there to tell her. Mind you, they've been without Eren for years. It was more like, "What can we do?" How do we stop this? Do we stop this? She and Armin have been defenders of Eren because they've known him for almost their entire lives, so it would only make sense for her to ask him. Her character develops not just because of Eren but also Ymir, but I won't speak too much on that. To sum it up, just because her main storyline is an "unreciprocated" love story about Eren does not make her a flat character. She gives a lot of depth to the story by showing the viewers how much Eren's actions hurt everybody, even those he's closest to. This story wouldn't have been as much of an emotional masterpiece without her. Don't downplay Isayama's writing.

Connor P

Floch is awesome, I can't deny

mariacake

Verti please go back to Episode 86 - Retrospective. You missed the post credit scene!

Mati

The fact that no one even knew about Keith Shadis sacrifice is depressing

Tacosareneat

I've watched all of his current shows, but I also started with his Eminem vids before the yearlong verti hiatus of 2025. Neverrrr would have thought he would've explored anime but so glad he did. Vertis anime reactions weren't something I knew I wanted but he's the best anime reactor now 😂

Freddy

For episode 27, I like how genuinely sad you were over Shadis’ death, but we never got the “To Be Continued” screen… there’s still more to the episode 👀

haz

the way you react to shows and movies from a perspective of someone who reacts to music/rap is sooo good cus you be picking up on every detail and you're constantly looking for clues too !! im picking up on new things even though ive seen this show 2x over by myself LOL

MISPLACED

You cooked ✍️🔥

trifle619

it baffles me cos this is the same guy who was like "who are you?" @ bertholdt when the main cast had already interacted with him many times LOL

André Carvalho

And you’re a Granger main… respect! Great choice of main!

ijustwannabyf

i would love to point out the scene in this episode, episode 26!! i was waiting on this!! Isayama purposely had armin be shot in the mouth because he is usually the de escalator/peacemaker so in this scene he is shot in the mouth making him unable to talk during this scene giving connie all of the weight on this situation it’s truly amazing to watch!

Bok

50:54 I think you hit the nail on the head. Floch loves power and being in control. However I think the need to be in control stems from the trauma he got during the Shiganshina battle. Floch and the rest of the recruits hadn't encountered titans and real battle yet. They probably had certain expectations of how it was going to go. They will ride there, and fight the titans and come out victorious. Some people will die, but it will be worth it. However they were faced with a cruel reality. They rode to wall Maria just to ride to their deaths without having really done anything. People like having agency. This is why a lot of people are scared of planes while not being scared of cars, despite cars being a lot more dangerous. I believe that Floch's asshole nature stems from overcompensating for his insecurities as being "fodder". When brining Erwin to the roof, he said he wondered why he was the only one alive and that it must have been his role to revive Erwin. That situation was also out of his control and Armin got revived. His lack of agency in the massacre is corroborated by what Floch told Armin in the medal ceremony "Even fodder like me has the right to decide if it's worth dying for". I also believe this is why Floch is so much for the rumbling. Rather than just hoping that things will work out, he chooses to help Eren in a solution that will 100% protect Paradis from the world. Of course, none of this excuses his actions, but I really love what Isayama did with his character.

Omnipotent

when is the next poll gonna be for what anime you watch next personally i want Vinland saga or code geass

cupid

Vinland saga yesss plsssss

AtmaIllumina

Pretty sure Annie mopped the floor with Mikasa the first time they fought in the scouts training, but right now Mikasa would no diff her. She's been out of the game and Mikasa has gotten much better with ODM gear.

VeggyZ

lmao, Mikasa is showing that Ackerman aura again - we haven't seen her get so wild in a while. That was ...fucking cool. The rain of blood, her moves were so slick too, very cool. Whether it's Levi, Kenny, or Mikasa, they're all very slick. Kenny had a little different kind of aura, but he had it too. When they're cool they're super cool.

Ava No

I have no clue WHAT they were feeding the animators for episode 27 but my fucking god... Kudos to every insanely talented person who poured blood sweat and tears into that absolute masterpiece of action

Aidan

Bro I love the AOT reaction but when your done you’ve gotta start stranger things again

nonny

Vert, i js gotta say ive never been too much into watching people react to things. Ive always been those people who never rlly seen the point in it but watching you react definitely is an experience and for me to pay to watch you react for the full experience should say alot js from me. And ill say it was definitely worth it ima watch ur jjk reaction soon ✌️💯keep up the work also i think u watching aot and reacting a 2nd time sum months ltr would be a good idea, Infinite content glitch lol😂😂but id definitely watch that

rayquaza

Breaking bad is not close to this man it’s not nearly as creative doesn’t have as many good characters the peaks aren’t as high idk man aot is just something else

Mel

I don't like or watch reaction content at all. I stumbled on it by chance on YT and for some reason clicked. Here I am. Now hoping for a rewatch + OVAs, the show Dark, and Serial Experiments Lain.

Mel

We actually know what happens to the Titans post rumbling thanks to an interview with the creator.

Jball

Willy Tybur told them in his speech that the king wiped their memories. The world still didn’t care and chose to declare war on them.

PilotingSRN

This is still all heavily focused on Eren, but you are talking about Mikasa. Think about that. Truly, take a shot everytime YOU say Eren when explaining Mikasa's inner conflicts. lol But I will say, I'm not here to debate it, only to point out why people say what they do.

Armani

Your next watch should be Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood!

I think chainsawman would be an anime you‘d reaaally like. animation and storyline are peakkkk

Please PLEASE react to the fate series, I genuinely think you would enjoy it and the story is amazing! It’s totally for you. It also inspired a lot of aspects in JJK (Sukuna, Domain Expansions) I hope you see this comment! (fate/stay night: unlimited blade works, fate/stay night: heaven’s feel, fate/zero)

VeggyZ

lmao... yes, if Pieck isn't broadcast ahead of time, in her titan form... it can pretty much be traumatic. You don't know what you're hearing at first.

Myra

DONT skip the credits and after credits of the movie!

Ryuk

Vert missed some scene after shadis and magath’s death! There’s some post credit scenes there! Bro got so emotional. 🫂

VeggyZ

Hey man, I have that screenshot, and many others as my wallpaper montage. I have a whole folder full - except I have my video player of choice (VLC Player) set to screenshot on the fly - so I see a cool thing, I hit F5, and she saves to the wallpaper folder. I am PRETTY sure I saw you using VLC before - so you should set that hotkey and just jam it when you see some cool shit. Us weebs will make a weeb out of you yet. Even without your consent. You're basically done for. I do hope you enjoy it though, Verti.

OPbruce

fuck yeah

Amina

I was rewatching the past videos and noticed the theme during eren’s memories is the same as Ymir flashback. I don’t know if that has a deeper meaning or meant to be a parallel but I think it’s an interesting fact

Moses

this is me giving you the sloppiest head of all time for finding that scene in 2 seconds ive seen this show like 10 times and idk who tf samuel is

Moe

check out AOT world map, maybe you'll notice something... The answer (if you didn't notice): It is the same as our world map just flipped updside down Paradis is Madagascar, and Marley occupies Africa

Ben Stover

There's such a strange moment in this last episode where the concept of the rumbling becomes reality. Its weird that a show can make you feel that way. We knew it was happening, we know it'll destroy the world, but until you see it at the end, you really didn't know. At least thats how it was for me

Aroe

Seeing the oppressed become the oppressor is a really common theme, both in media and in the real world. Walter White as an example was oppressed by Grey Matter (from his perspective they stole his idea, leaving him nothing), and almost every character thought he couldn't possibly have the capacity to do what he did. Almost every good vs bad storyline has the "bad" side be fueled by oppression, or perceived oppression. Honestly, I very much recommend checking out Black Mirror on Netflix if you're into this kind of moral ambiguity. Almost every episode is self-contained, and has some sort of twist that will do one (or some) or many things to you including: Making you sit with a feeling of existential dread that you didn't even know you could feel, questioning your own morals, amazement that there are a ton more stories to be explored, and feeling so absolutely disgusted with yourself when you realize the writers have made you feel like the scum of the earth to entice you into even watching the show to begin with. Usually it's a combination of disgust, dread, amazement, excitement, depression, and questioning your life decisions. If you ever do decide to check it out, make sure to do a vote for each Episode since each episode is as I mentioned self contained. Some are stories that make you question every single one of your values, some give you a weirdly cathartic sense of sadness, some are just straight up dogshit, and some are probably some of the greatest stories and/or twist you'll ever see in modern media (seriously). Good first episodes are: White Christmas, The Entire History of You, Fifteen Million Merits, White Bear, and Shut up and Dance. I've been watching this since I found clips on yt from S1, and I love how much you pause to stop and think about the morality and the story you're watching here. Would love to watch your reaction for BM since you seem to like questioning the story and morality of it all.

It has been such an honour to be on this journey with you since the very beggining!!! I'm beyond excited for tomorrow's upload.

This is a very interesting perspective which exactly opposes Gabi's perspective in S4 part 1 where she mentions to Falco that nobody saw how brutal it was when the walls in Paradis Island were destroyed so why should we care about them. Basically the point being, unless one see's the tragedy one can never understand it

Aurea

3:01:46 He did talk to Mikasa there, she's not daydreaming u can tell by - the Titan markings appear on him before he leaves, but why would she picture his markings when she hugging him. The markings appeared before he finished talking to Armin too. - Despite her being Ackerman, somehow he can talk to her this way bc he's already taken Mikasa n Levi to the pathes before like everyone else.

Aurea

Jean is 190 cm/ 6'3" n Mikasa is 176 cm/ 5'9.5." - In that scene when Jean n his family walks away—the woman's head only reaches to Jean's shoulder. The height gap rules out Mikasa. There's s4 character height comparison charts for reference. Since Pieck (55 cm/ 5'1") is only as tall as Jean's shoulder's as seen in charts—it might be her. - In the manga panel of Mikasa being buried—she's still wearing the cloth covering her wrist. Smth she wouldn't hide if she got married especially if she had children meaning Mikasa likely never married.

i been watching aot since 2013. when they changed studios for s4 i lost interest in it. youtube feed recommended you watching s1 and i thought u were funny so i decided to sub and watch the rest with you, s4 and all. no glaze bro you got me to finally lock in and finish aot after so long and i cant believe it took me this long in the first place. thank you verti, im full.

“Reiner’s nobody” 😭😭

I smell Polish baddie watching aot first time?

My favorite thing about vertical is the way he will always give gabi the credit for something cool happening. Who blew up the train? Gabi did it. Like bro is giving her the props

Armin, Mikasa, jean, Connie are the traitors in a way. Eren never forgot about them. Killing them is out of the question for Eren. But, they are actively trying to stop Eren knowing what would happen to him. "Would you rather sacrifice the world to save your mom, or sacrifice your mom to save the world" Eren chose the former. And his friends chose the latter. Regardless, Jaegerists are more concrete in their plan. And know what they want. While the scouts only thing is that "genocide is bad". They are not thinking ahead. They don't have any plans to save Eldia aswell... They are essentially working with Marley to kill their own race. Just because "Genocide is bad". They don't realize that it's either you genocide the whole world. Or you genocide yourselves.

Adyan Apurbo

Eren is thinking about his friends sacrificing the world and himself. While his friends are thinking of the world and Sacrificing Eren. Watch who you call to homies frfr

Austin Brown

The two leaders of the forces going against each other in the first episode (Warriors v Scouts) come together and die for the same cause 80 episodes later… I know all he ever gets is glaze but this is the reason. Thank you Isayama.

Tristan

Totally worth it to watch it here, I’ve seen many reactions to this show and no one absorbs anywhere near as much as you have from this show first time watching, like I’ve probably seen aot 10 times and always forget who Samuel and Daz are but you being able to find the exact scene of Vinny calling his name was crazy XD

I know you're finished the series, but it's funny that you say that Paradis existed for 80 years. It was 80 years when Grisha was a kid. But when Grisha grew into an adult (start of the series), it's about 100 years. Another funny thing I noticed is when you said "sorry, not sorry" for Jean, he literally then says "sorry" to Gabi, and then "I'm not apologizing to you" (not sorry) to Reiner. You make great dialogue predictions lol. Lastly, THANK YOU for mentioning the dinosaurs in the season 2 intro. I 100% think it's meant to throw the viewers off. Especially because we're not introduced to the Beast Titan the first time we see it.

I wish I hadn’t gotten impatient and read the manga after the first half of season 4, it did NOT do the ending justice. This is SO much better animated than I expected it to be
