As someone who has read the whole manga, the story is great. You should at least watch Season 1 so that you can watch the Reze movie. It’s like a 3 week casual commitment and the movie is genuinely beautiful. After that you can drop it if you don’t like it (although I think you’ll ”get” the show more after the movie). The next season isn’t out yet anyway.

This show is very gooned out. If you turn off your critical thinking and just root for Denji in his primal pursuits, it can be fun. Totally understand why it can kinda ruin otherwise impactful moments tho. It does get more interesting and develops more as it goes, plus the movie after season 1 is phenomenal. I mean after season 1 it was in my top 10, you can tell from the first season how the managaka is writing the story and building the world, an anime doesn't need to be finished to be in your top 10, you can see potential at the start, and I see as much potential in Season 1 Chainsaw man as much as I saw in Dorohedero, dorohedero season 1 i knew we were in for a goddamn ride and the same with this anime. Plus production all around and pacing in first season is done soooo damn well and the japananese voice acting of everyone, stark contrast to demon slayers voice acting where this feels more real closer to jjk vibe. The movie confirmed that this series is going to be a master piece.

We’re so used to protagonists who want to be the greatest whatever in the world, or avenge their lost loved ones, or find a mystical powerful object. But in REAL life, how many boys/young men do you know who just wanna make money and get women? Who just wanna live comfortably? Denji doesn’t have some made up fake goal. He’s a teenage boy. Imagine if all you wanted was toast, a bed, and a girl and yet people keep trying to kill you. He wants the most basic shit and the world won’t even give it to him. Without spoilers, horniness will stay in the show as a main trait and motivation of protagonist. However the plot itself and other characters are not driven by sexual things at all. I wouldn't agree with others about deeper meaning or philosophy later in the show - there's none - but there are twists, drama, concealed motives, it's dynamic, well paced, animation/music are incredible - the movie alone worth it. Unless juvenile for you is only about oversexualizing - I wouldn't call it too juvenile. In CSM there's no flat characters, screaming/yelling, overreacting and fan service - the most annoying things in anime for me

TRUST the show gets a lot more nuanced and interesting. The author is kind of a weirdo in the sense that he likes making really dumb and outlandish plots and then using that to make some kind of interesting commentary (eventually). Season 1 gets better in the second half, and the movie is absolute peak.

The juvenile elements are for sure tuned to the max these first episodes, it mellows out quickly and takes a different or at least heavily toned down approach to this theme of the show. Shonen are, as you read, marketed at a younger male audience and sexuality is a less open subject in Japan, which makes animes and manga one of the mediums they can express themselves in regards to sexuality. It's totally fine to be off-put somewhat by it, I think most people are who haven't watched much anime. Many of the larger and more popular animes that feature these kinda degen approaches usually only focuses heavily on them at the initial phase of the series until the central themes are dwelved into later. Don't be afraid to voice when things like these are strange to you, part of the appeal of your channel besides your personality is the fact that you are new to anime - that's what we watch you for. Many of the people who are more seasoned within anime were also lifting their eyebrows to stuff like this. Maybe you should watch one episode of an ultra degen anime like Chainsmoker Cat just to see how bad it can get in animes that actually feature this stuff as regular themes lol.

I tried really hard to watch CSM and finish the first season but it's so corny with the gooner bait I legit couldn't bring myself to keep watching. It had a few good scenes but other than that I was struggling to stay off my phone while watching. I wish you luck bro. Ep 1 was freaking amazing and Ep2 was pretty good too and then it went downhill from there. That's just my opinion. Also a little edit here, I think the Sub is better if you want to take it more seriously. The English dub is really goofy and some of the VAs just aren't good. Even some of the AOT dub is pretty good. But the CSM dub is only good for comedic effect. Everything else sucks and it takes away from the legitimately serious scenes.

For everyone defending how Denji's horniness as a 16 year old boy is supposed to be relatable and understandable given his background, I can think of a dozen other shounen MC's that also grew up bullied and ostracized whose life goal isn't to touch breasts. Sub is better in this case, its not an abnormal thing to say or weeb thing to think, there are some dubs that are better and that's that. It's subjective. Now with that being said, something I haven't really seen people comment about is that the intro is actually an amalgamation of the multiple scenes from the writer's favorite movies. And yes the show does get even better.

you gotta think in Denji's perspective. a 16 year old kid who's only worry was ever debt, food, and his dog. now doesn't have a dog anymore, his debt is gone, he could die anytime, he wants to make sure he experiences life the best way a 16 year old boy knows how...... the ladies. he's a simple boy, food and ladies. a teen with no school, a good paying job, a place to live what else could he ask for. poor thing really has no other idea of life and no family or friends so he's gotta start small with the dreams. i will say not every teenager is going to be as introspective as Eren he had the influence of adult him telling him what he should focus on and do. he had a bigger calling than just being a regular teen boy, you can see the difference in him and like Reiner or Jean. Sure Reiner had big responsibilities but he also still had time to pine after Historia. Denji was in full on survival mode until the end of the first episode now he's trying to do 16 years worth of maturing in the few days we've known him.

For clarification on mappa, they are just the ones in charge of animation. Pretty much all animes are adapted from the manga as source for the whole plot and art style, of course it's not gonna be an exact replica of the manga but mappa does do a great job of adapting different manga artstyles and staying true to the original source

This guy hasn't watched NEARLY enough shōnen to appreciate Chainsaw Man. The whole point is that it subverts the genre's conventions, which only works if you've already seen the standard setup a few times. So Denji just wanting a normal life and to cop a feel won't read as subversion, but just as weird. He should just drop it for the moment.

Reducing Denji to a "gooner" or a "simp" just for the sake of cringe comedy completely misses the entire point of his character. His obsession with superficial things isn't standard anime horniness; it’s literal trauma:He has never been free: He went straight from Yakuza slavery to Public Safety control. He never had the luxury to develop grand motives, like wanting revenge. His entire life has just been raw survival. No baseline for attachment: He grew up in extreme isolation and starvation. Because he never experienced genuine emotional bonds, he doesn't know how to look for them. Maximizing the bare minimum: He hyper-focuses on basic physical desires (touching boobs, kissing) because those are the only tangible, immediate rewards his brain can comprehend after a lifetime of deprivation. Make an example, if you never had and could never dream to have a good food, wouldn't be obsessed with that when the dream seems close? I agree that i don't like simps without a reason just for comedy but his character makes sense with his life, he has no shame, you saw the sigarettes he put in his mouth for 10 yen for example, he would do anything to have better food, better tits and so on

Hey big dog, I caught Chainsawman on the week the manga release and I read every chapter of it weekly from December 2018 to March 2026 when it was running. Chainsawman as a story is deeply philosophical and uniquely disturbing. I'm glad you're giving it a chance. Something to bare in mind is that Denji is not only 16 years old in the height of puberty, but he's also an uneducated orphan. Stunted both mentally and emotionally the kid is practically feral. The negative feelings you have towards him and his motivations are valid but they're also intended. While the fanservice is off-putting and overly obnoxious at the start of the story it calms down a lot as the plot continues. I'm excited to see how you feel after the next four-five episodes.

The horny stuff is bordering on fan service on the surface, however if you take a closer look you realise that the anime is not commenting on the morality of the 'relationship' denji has with women around him. You could very well (and I think you should) interpret it as Denji being an emotionally mature 16yo, who is being groomed my Makima who is obviously manipulating him by using his sexual libido to get her way. This is an obvious canonical interpretation of Makima (and other women wayy older than him) being sleaxy with him, just think about how horrible it is for 20+ yo people being with people below 18.
