when it comes to the weird scenes, they're extremely uncomfortable to watch bc of how young he is. usually the real gooner animes do not gaf and have an insane amount of fan service and certain animation style. this is like disguised as one of those if you just watch it from the surface level from the first ep you could see makima (grown asf) manipulating denji (a teenager) who grew up w no formal education, no guidance, and no love. i mean, he didn't even know if he was actually 16 or not. in the scene where she bites his finger, right after she immediately tells him "now do this thing for me"; it's manipulation to a T. also she's telling him she'll do all these things for him, sexually teasing him, and showing him affection knowing he's never had that before. it's obvious grooming. i cant standdd her and himeno, while i did feel some sympathy for her in certain scenes, i cant bring myself to like her bc yea she was fully abt to rape denji + even the kissing is weird considering they're ages (she's in her mid-20s i believe). most ppl don't like makima from what i can tell online, but i feel like ppl tend to give himeno a pass esp when they see her love for aki as if it forgives anything. i hate to do this bc it's such a double standard, but to put it in another perspective, would ppl still feel the same way abt himeno if she was a grown man and denji was a teenage girl? or tbh even if denji was still a boy in this hypothetical, i think ppl would still be less forgiving towards himeno compared to how they are now

7:07 this show would be classified as Ecchi which means sexual themes. Harem shows are moreso all the girls want 1 guy and he’s in control. This is not the case with Denji.

After you're done with season 1, the next part of the story is a movie called "Chainsaw Man - The Movie: Reze Arc" that came out last year, it should be on Crunchyroll somewhere. Season 2 is also currently in production and will probably come out either late 2026 or sometime in 2027

Yes Verti the word was indeed Harem, but chainsaw man is closer to an inversion of that genre, because even though he is surrounded by women, his experiences with them are almost never ultimately positive at all. He might get some scraps but he'll never be at the table with the rest of them

I have never in my life seen a scene quite like Denji and Himeno in her apartment before. It's so absurd how much time and care they put into this very bizarre and highly immoral moment. It's crazy how long they bask in this uncomfortable situation and still making it look like cinema, it really boggles my mind. It's truly unique and I love it.

A little bit of context for you verti, when mappa make anime they get funding from outside companies and as a result they don’t get the largest cut of profit from all these amazing shows they’ve made. Chainsaw man is the first show they’ve funded by themselves so they’ve put a lot of effort into it (hence the 12 different outros) the show was easily the most hyped anime debut we’ve had in the last decade and it unfortunately came out to some pretty mixed reviews. Partially due to the west disliking how down bad Denji is and the Japanese strongly disliking the cinematic art style. I believe mappa had to wait and see if CSM was a success before they could spend more money to continue the series which makes the slow production make sense. thankfully season 1 did well and the film did HUGE numbers making close to $190m in profit so following seasons are likely to come much quicker now. I hope you’ll check out the film after season one because that shit is bonkers

the entire point of that scene though is to show that no matter what, denji is being manipulated and taken advantage of. anybody with a shred of media literacy can tell that fujimoto isn’t condoning anything he portrays here, we’re just seeing it all from denjis perspective. because at the end of the day he’s just a boy who’s been alone for so long he doesn’t know what real love feels like.

Yeah I get that but it doesn’t actually address the morality aspect. It kind of bundles it together and glosses over it in my opinion. I think the difference is that western audiences would require that more strongly addressed (it would become their primary focus), whereas Japanese audiences don’t seem to think or mind about this sort of thing.

idk if you'll actually see this verti but a fun fact about the intro is that it is FULL of references. Things like The Big Lebowski, Pulp Fiction (a good ass movie you should def react to if you havent already seen it), Neon Genesis Evangelion, Resevoir Dogs, and a few others i cant remember rn. There's also a part where they show a snail with some crazy ass eyes. The snail has been taken over by a parasite called leo-somethingicantremember that essentially replaces the hosts nervous system and controls it from the inside. the pulsing colors in the eyestalks of the snail is actually what it looks like in real life when this happens. it's also a reference to the manipulation and control makima has over denji.

Yeah but not for the reason you're thinking. Chainsaw Man is set in the 90s, And a legal adult was 20 years old (Changed to 18 in 2022, I believe). Denji is within the age of consent BUT he's still a legal minor. Japan has a lot of laws against exploitation of youths & it's not as cut & dry as it is in the west (18=okay & anyone under 18=not okay). A 20 year old having sex with a 16 year old isn't exactly the problem, it's that a 20 year old pressured her junior who she got heavilly drunk (while being under the alcohol legal age) & pressured him for sex. That's why she was worried.
