I'm going to be so fr I think vegaspete is a case where the media provided is crazy asf and the fans who write fic clean it up in a way that makes it at least tolerable to imagine a world wherein they could be feasible. Idk if the actual novel had a bit more that makes it less traumatic but ao3 definitely did some legwork

As someone who thoroughly enjoys some fucked up toxic yaoi, I was one of the people sat for vegaspete 🤭🤷‍♀️ and let's just say compared to the novel this is the cleaned up version of their storyline. This is about Pete’s tattoo “No legacy is so rich as honesty.” Although you could take this quote at face value as a proverb about honesty, it has multiple meanings in Shakespeare’s original writing. A woman says this while talking about soldiers being honest, but the audience can derive a subtler, more fun meaning. The play involves lies and seduction, and this line has another meaning of “there’s nothing so valuable as keeping your honor(=virginity).” The line is spoken to a virginal woman who is being pursued by a married man, seemingly reminding her to put up her guard and stay “honest,” which is a word that can mean “honorable” in Shakespeare’s works. “Legacy” at that time could also have the meaning of a dowry for your husband, giving a third shade of meaning: the woman’s honor/virginity is more valuable than any other dowry she brings. This is ironic for Pete because one meaning of his tattoo could be to stay honest and loyal to the major family. It also relates to how he tries to stay “honorable” by denying his sexual urges. Ironically, that’s not very “honest” of him, as Vegas later points out. Idk if the author knew about the multiple meanings this quote has, but the fact that Pete tries to defend himself from Vegas’s sexual advances and later fails fits well.

The protagonist and antagonist question is, because of the show "Bad and Crazy," the protagonist has a multiple personality disorder, so throughout the show, I think one of the personalities the antagonist is killed, which means the protagonist was killed as well, because physically, the protagonist has the antagonist's body. Honestly, I am explaining from what I've understood from the constant debate, Tankun has had with his bodyguards. So, Tankun is saying that because Porschay has the same interpretation of the show as him, he has watched the show.

I like them too. But I'm also one of the people who like these dark tropes so I got involved with their storyline. In real life, this is sickening and completely unforgivable no matter how much you think someone redeems themselves. But for some reason I love these storylines about fictional characters.

Now about Vegas and Pete. When it come to Vegas I become colourblind. And it’s Bible fault, he is beyond words beautiful and talented (I can’t believe it’s his first acting experience and he show us such a high lever of acting), so I can’t hate Vegas. But I always like twisted and complex relationship in fiction. Vegas is actually my favorite character in the whole show! And trust me: Vegas and Pete are a match made in heaven (or hell?😈) No one is as perfect for each other as they are! No one has convince me otherwise (I've read too many fanfics about them, not to mention writing one myself)

spoilers tl;dr: they are for viewers who have some of their trauma or ways to deal with it, i assume; its interesting to see it broken down in their character dynamic. a fantasy of, while feeling like a freak, finding a coplimentary freak, is also part of it. also it doesnt require to think it's okay relationship or vegas is okay person, to follow it, because the frame of the show (organised criminals on a verge of internal war) requires some supension of disbelief(?) in the first place, in the way their world functions and by what rules, and none whats happening can or should be applied to real life directly like none of what characters in 10th century politics settings do can. longtext as somebody for whom its the most intersting pairing in the show - yeah i know. personally, my argumenent for them being portrayed as a pairing is never "vegas must be forgiven" or "vegas is not sick and twisted" or "they have chill and healthy dynamic that anybody should be bothered to engage with outside of suddenly psychosexual bl about mafia". its not that straightforward, what people like them for. the problems, the themes they deal with are more personal to some viewers than others: the parental trauma, the violence, the sadomasochism. then they figure each other out and fall to almost sponsor/mentee relationship for a second is where it cicks for some people. but then it doesnt rid of any problems while they fall into codependency, and it's a plus that they address that in the show (with pete's monologue, outburst and escape). i think what throws a lot of people off is that initial kidnapping and torture are portrayed in a very ingulgent almost "sexy" way, way before it gets more obviously personal and - though very doubtfully - consentual. but its partially demand of the genre and partially imortant for their relationship: that before they figured how are they complimentary to each other in bizzarelly intimate way, they felt hints of it in their dynamic. in torture scene most obvious. though on a second rewatch, i can see it hinted before it plays out. other thing that throws people off is that - save from Kinn taking advantage of drunk Porshe - this mafia show was mostly a comedy till about episode 8, and only after things start to downspiral in increasing pace it gets into this psychosexual storyline. i totally see why some people drop it here, if i was waching it for anything other than vegas and pete storyline, they would throw me off so much. i think big part of why people "forgive" vegas is that pete does; and also that vegas gets stripped of his power and his ambitions (after his defeat and his father's death). its not redemption for all his crimes, but its not a kind of show where mafia gets redemption for being mafia and doing mafia typical things (by going legal and to jail). interpersonal conflicts resolve by apology and change in behaviour - and circumstance to be sure. major conflicts are mafia politics of sorts and get resolved by one side physically defeating the other. violent organised crime is merely used as a framework (and doesnt get challenged), and imples different rules for characters to operate by. there was a moment between pete and porsche about morality of it, but both reason porsche embraced mafia position and pete left it were more personal relationship-related than moral, as far as i figured. so far, in only season (and idk about books), its not really about concienciousness of characters and changing rules they operate by in any meaningful way (there was minor and major families are working together now, but im not sure what to make out of it but that porsche got power). rather show examines negotiating boundaries (or fighting for them physically) in more practical manner. thing thats a real bummer in shows like these - that deal with extreme power dynamics - is that they are more about negotiating freedom/agency/power than about love. in kinnporsche it gets resolved by porsche getting comparable amount of power, in vegaspete - by vegas losing it. and i dont rememeber how kimchay resolve from last rewatch, if there was anything after kim decided to brake in off with chay - i assume to spare chay from this in the first place
