you've just saved my boring work day 🙏🏻

Jared

Guys u really need to watch RUNEXT this survival show was crazy 😭😭 and traumatic…😭

Chan Chowder

The filipino politics segment took me out lol yes please let's vote better in the next election! TT_TT

lauren

i’d love to see you react to adela’s solo releases - they’re SOOO good. and she features emily as a dancer in a video too (they’re still besties :’))

Reid Lava

As a black American woman, when I watched these episodes at first I wanted to shake Manon so bad because since I was young it was instilled in me that it’s too easy for people to label you as aggressive or not easy to work with if you start to slip up (which the show did with manon who never was the there vs Adela who was the mom of the group, always there but couldn’t get the online vote). I Also understand how frustrating it is to accommodate someone who’s not working/ working half assed. But on the flip side I also understand Manon’s point of view, coming in at 21 giving up her autonomy cause she looked pretty self sufficient in Switzerland. Also she had her own control over her social media space but now her space has switched to the public who is uncontrollable, which probably made her confidence tank and shut down, hense skipping practice etc. There’s also a part of this I think makes manon look rude or selfish but it’s just European bluntness vs the American “avoid the issue” mentality. Sorry for rambling, this is just something that I noticed while watching

Alissa

the anti-Manon AND anti-Lara hate trains are genuinely insane because like 90% of it is straight up racism lol. the very heavy narrative against Manon when this was airing was so annoying but you also had people calling Lara terrible things/saying she was a mean girl (which still happens to this day, for both of them) even though her perspective here was completely valid and understandable??? it's actually fascinating how much more woke and accepting i-fans claim to be in comparison to k-fans but they're just as bad (if not worse in some aspects)

Jamell N

I'll never forget that you could tell the staff was frustrated with Manon during the show but without all of the documentary context it just read as lowdown and shady attempts at evil editing that they couldn't do without a real survival show format, which pissed me off and made me double down on supporting her 🥴

M

whenever they show the dance training i get intense PTSD as an ex-competitive dancer because these teachers are the same everywhere. just ruthless and mean universally. also the dance lingo seems so funny to an outsider but its so real with the YA DA DA YA talk.

Jaden

The thing I hate about this documentary is that it gave racist fans an excuse to hate on Manon and Lara (even tho Lara wasn’t the only one to say stuff about Manon and feel that way). It also created horrible solo stans. It’s not a coincidence that the two brown girls in the group get the most insane hate. These people will say the most insane/disgusting things about them then try to act like it’s justified because “Manon was lazy and didn’t deserve to debut” or “Lara was mean and a bully” like…… AHHHHH!!!! To this day people still bring it up and try making it a big deal when it’s been so long and they’ve all moved on 😭

Lara Lerke

i know you typically only react to stuff from the trainees that made it to the finale, but I think you guys would absolutely eat up adelas solo stuff

Shmatreflon

They did give Hinari a send off talking head lol You were just distracted by the wave of Adela sadness

Jaden

It was awful online the day this series dropped. The amount of hate and bitterness towards people was CRAZY!! 😭

Alissa

also i've never actually watched this full documentary before but i feel like there's a distinct lack of coverage for the asian trainees so far???? like even yoonchae, we haven't seen anything about her family and idek if we've gotten a talking head for her so far. it's fascinating especially since she was popular throughout all the missions/was consistently top 6, so I'm interested to see if that changes.

All the therapy sessions in this show had me doing a side eye because first of all… they shouldn’t have been recorded for privacy reasons. However I understand they were recorded to serve a narrative for the doc and also they could get extra sound bites and stuff. Also, the group session without manon was a horrible idea. It just felt like they all came together to air their grievances and she couldn’t have defended herself, or express her troubles with the program. As someone who watched in real time it felt very weird and targeted to further push the narrative of her being lazy and what not. Which I also find interesting because in the performances she was never the worst person (dancing or singing wise) which meant she had to have been at enough practices to consistently keep up and be at their level. I think the whole thing was over dramatised for the doc which led to a lot of hate for Manon and Lara, as they’re darker skin poc women. They also did an official live stream after the doc aired where the girls said the beef was squashed and they love each other but all that didn’t matter at the moment because the internet was up in flames about the whole thing. Sorry for the paragraphs hahaha 🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾

Alissa

oop nevermind i just got to the yoonchae family section SDJFKSLDJSK

iemiliah

here for the reaction vibes, yay

Darkqueen

Currently a quarter through and I wanted to add a bit of happy news, the members appear to be really close with each other and whatever frustration that was happening at the time of the show, looks to have been cleared up and they are having a great time with each other. The competition was a pressure cooker situation and the stress and anxiety that the contestants felt during the old evals was multiplied once the show started. And for better or worse, fan opinion definitely added to that. While watching the show, I tried to not take what they said in frustration as a mark on the girls character because we have all been there, situations may have been vastly different but the feelings are the same.

Jamell N

Manon was number 4th in the voting?? I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT

Moon !

Adam's point that people will be weird about Manon because she's black and RJs point about needing a female therapist 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Y'all just get it!

sofia

omg there's literally a couple of moments where i'm holding my breath, this show is just insane

Auburn

I did appreciate the cute/chaotic intermission 😅

AB

i just know Lexi is their biggest regret, because the CEO and many of them talked about how good she is and how they wanted her, but i think they push the line too far and broke her she straight up left

Aleisha Layne

I said it when they brought manon on....shes 100% gonna be in the group. Manon as soon as they had her in that promo video looking like a whole ACOTAR fl she was their visual for the group. They knew kpop stans and non kpop stans would eat her up and we did...she was my D1 and is still my bias!

Shmatreflon

I am a firm believer that Mitra didn't actually believe the show needed drama. I believe they received backlash and she is a professional ass-coverer.

Shmatreflon

This is based on how she handles the Lexi convo next ep.

Jamell N

Also I will say Adela was right bc she's a sickeningggg as a soloist I feel like she instantly clicked for me the second I heard her on a record

❣️ Vladlena ❣️

“Iliya does look old” — EXCUSE ME? And the instant correction to “older” didn’t make it any better 😩 She looks her age. She just European!

gyukoo

I remember being so confused when this doc came out, wondering why they were actively trying to push the 'everyone hates Manon' narrative when she ends up in the group, and the audience either comes away hating Manon too or hating the other girls for grouping up against her. It was just also frustrating as a woman of colour watching the two girls with the darkest skin in the group be used for drama when these companies KNOW what would happen to them I honestly wish they never released it because everytime katseye gets a wave of new fans the doc gets brought back up and the hate starts all over again. It took Manon a second, and the girls were completely valid in being upset, but she got there in the end and earned her spot, and I can't imagine Katseye without her. I hope the girls all succeed, and this group gives them everything they've been dreaming of.

Rere

I supported and still support all of Manon’s rights and wrongs (not that she had any wrongs) 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

onlyonlysun

the other thing about mitra saying that what the fans really want is drama: sure, that might be what fans of the SHOW want-- but is it productive long-term for the group that will exist after the show is done?

onlyonlysun

nevermind you said this right after i typed it lol

Nina Sera

I as fucked up as it was how they did Adela, they were kinda right bc she is really flourishing as a solo artist. She released 3 songs/mvs independently and then got signed to capitol records recently, so I think we’ll be hearing more from her soon!(I know we’re getting to the end of the month so there’s probably not time but if there’s anyway to use this as a back door to watch her stuff I think you’d enjoy seeing how she’s landed on her feet.) The Manon stuff is really interesting to me as a Dream Academy watcher/voter bc obviously we didn’t know any of that so for us, we were really excited for her from the trailer and intros and then mission one she had literally one line (but still sounded great) so ppl were really side eyeing like why y’all tryna hide our girl? Then the doc comes out and it’s like oh it’s bc she was regularly missing practices and being off pitch in rehearsals😭 (side note on that, we talked before about how the timeline of the documentary is really wonky and I think not addressing Manon missing rehearsal until they went public is part of that, bc it was obviously happening well before then and I doubt (or don’t want to believe) that she was missing practice during the actual show. The dance practice they showed her missing def seemed like it was from prior since she wasn’t on a dance team at that time) Anyway, I don’t think the execs thought about the butterfly effect Manon’s one line from mission one would have, bc since ppl were upset she didn’t have lines ofc they were also mad that Brooklyn had so many lines. I think a lot of ppl didn’t care for her voice outside of that bc of the twang, but I do think she got extra backlash bc of that imbalance. I remember after watching that video feeling like “oh this is the white girl they want for the group” (and as y’all kinda noted, as a white American I was voting for everyone but the white Americans bc they don’t need a global group to get an opportunity in the industry lol) Anyway these two were honestly the hardest episodes of the series, congrats on getting thru it😅 OH! Also for silence of the idols the chaperone posted on IG and is also in the pet 2 of their gnarly behind basically saying that they were overwhelming and he didn’t know what to do with them but he had so much fun and they made a fan out of him lol.

reme

omggggg I miss seeing manon and nayoung together 🥹🥹🥹

serenity

I swear I was the only person voting for Adela like she was my main girrrrlly then she got dead last I was SICK lmaaoooo

Pixie

Imagine being told you've been eliminated from an experience you've put your heart and soul into, that's inherently personal and human, by a stupid ass AI voice.

nadia

oh - so, european perspective on lexie: i 100% see how at that moment the show crossed the line for her, and the girl was DONE. maybe it's bc unions don't have the stigma in europe that they do in the US, but if a company is not treating employees with professionalism and respect, the employees sure as hell won't stand for it. and all trainees were basically under a work contract, being paid in room + board + training. lexie was always shown to be a hard worker, so i don't think it's about having to work hard or lacking work ethic (i may be european but i've been working in the US for the past decade, and trust me, euro vacays are worth sacrificing when you have a professional goal in mind). rather, i think it was about the manipulation of trainees/artists that was displayed in this round. such techniques are common in korean survival shows, but - as you pointed out - if it's not what you signed up for AND you've never been through anything like it before, and the company springs it on you all and suddenly all your friends are crying and feeling too guilty or miserable to celebrate what for most of them was a win.... that just feels downright dehumanizing. it seems like lexie had close friends among the girls; she was getting good feedback; she fought her way back from a freakin' surgery... so when she decided to quit, it was VERY intentional and i am honestly proud of her for making the right decision for herself. btw i doubt their contract allowed them to walk out whenever they wanted, so maybe lexie just did what was in her power to do and stopped coming to rehearsals - thus making them let her go. and she likely made it clear that she was no longer interested in fighting to be in the group, bc she realized she'd have to spend the next X number of years working for the company that deliberately made their artists cry / fight each other bc "drama" puts money in the execs pockets. so from the bottom of my heart: GO GIRL. (ALSO: manon, another european contestant, got an avalanche of hate, for very obvious and ugly reasons, for similarly prioritizing her sense of self during this process. i don't think it's a coincidence that they both at some point felt like they had to check out - even temporarily - bc the process was making them lose perspective and feeling of self-worth. i'm sure once manon started talking to the others more openly about her feelings, they could understand where she was coming from and they all became tight as we see them today; but i COMPLETELY respect lexie's decision to go a different way.)

nadia

i could go on SUCH a furious rant against that depersonalized voice, but i already wrote a novel of a comment elsewhere so i'll just hi-five you in TOTAL agreement

Nina Sera

One other thing, obviously a lot of girls didn’t really get a storyline (honestly I don’t think this even counts as a storyline for Yoonchae) but for Marquise I think part of the reason she didn’t get more of one is bc when this came out she was a trainee with another label (supposedly TBL, possibly in consideration for meovv). She came back to social media a while ago, but has still been posting dance videos and recently asked fans to be patient just a little longer, the current theory is that she’s on YG’s Thai label and will debut with a Thai group, but idk how soon that will actually be.

Clara V.P

don't worry guys I think it was very smart from you to watch this months later as the discourse has been discoursED and we can ALL hopefully move on lmao

Willow

i completely understand the girls' frustration with Manon missing practices, but at times it felt like misplaced anger because its not as if Manon controlled the voting. There was so much limited content in Dream Academy, fans just voted on who caught our eye (i did anyways). I do think its wild that Adela went home first when she was consistently highly ranked in their evaluations, but I would blame the higher ups for that. As rough as it is to say, sometimes talent isn't always enough when it comes to the general public in terms of who will catch someone's eye. Overall though, all of the girls were put in a rough situation with being put into a survival show they did not sign up for.

Jenny Wilde

the whole Manon storyline still makes me uncomfortable, especially because it is soooo drawn out despite the girls saying it was more of a brief period in their journey. and unfortunately, it ended up being the main talking point of PSA; the takeaways for some people were either that Manon was lazy/rude or Lara, Adela, and Sophia (heavvvy on the former—I wonder why) were bullies/mean girls. Lara has even spoken about how all of the hate and death threats affected her mental heath. but the girls were able to poke some fun at all the drama in some eyekon-ic tiktoks that I recommend you check out.

shauni

coming in with my european opinions, if i had been scouted for a programme, consistently praised online and i’d featured constantly as the face of the programme, i’d have a lot of confidence about my chances of making the group in the same way manon probably did which gave her a mindset of it being okay to skip a few practices. we don’t have perfect attendance awards here, you’re encouraged to take sick days and mental health leave and i think that’s what’s happened. additionally, manon, despite being confident she would make the group, was insecure about her skills in comparison to the girls who had professional training and had applied for the show, who had been together for months by the time she joined. (also i’m sorry but if i’m grown and had my own place, would i want to go stay in a house with 19 other girls when i could afford to rent nearby? hell no. which did cause a riff as well.) i do agree with the other girls perspective though in that it felt like they were putting in more training but manon was getting pushed by the label due to her visual and star quality but at the same time, there could have been more done to really bring the girls together by the company rather than just forcing them to live together and hoping for the best. especially when they’re going to be recording their interactions. all in all, i think manon was just in her decision to take a step back when she was already a shoe-in if it protected her mental health but i think it did paint her in a bad light with the other trainees who had different mindsets and weren’t guaranteed to debut.

atlas

People still hating on both Adela and Manon and its like... but we got Adela as an amazing solo artist and Manon pulled it together, made the group and is excelling so it all worked out on that front. I understand the frustration from both sides idk

Chan Chowder

I always felt like if Lexie never left we would have had a different Katseye because it felt like Bang PD really wanted her to debut and they might choose a lineup that works with her in the group.

boop

yeah i think the time out from surgery really helped her with being able to separate herself from the situation, not saying she doesn't care at all about debuting but like i'm sure the time apart made it easier bc she didn't spend as much time pouring everything into this especially since from what we've seen that time frame she was gone for was super stressful and definitely trauma bonded the girls to the situation theyre in

boop

i think its so interesting how they mention that they think the fans see adela as a solo artist just like what they had in mind, but they never mentioned that... at least not on camera they mention her sticking out more or not being on the same vibe as everyone else but never a word about being a solo

boop

can we also talk about the wrong it really was to suddenly put megan in a new group have her practice a few times make her take her best friend mentor and mother's spot and make her wear her costume... totally not saying that if she was mean to iliya thats justifiably even though i'm sure megan was nice just maybe a bit emotionally off... but yeah i too would be an insane woman and lash out if i got put in her spot

Jared

Not the Mr.removing-

Jenny Wilde

and it’s not really what the fans want! manufactured drama and evil edits are often the main complaints from Western survival show watchers. and even in this episode, someone on the creative/executive team admits that friendship between group members is extremely important to fans, yet they actively created division in those friendships for the sake of “drama”.

David v

I do feel first mission was unfair as fuccc…. I think they should have had the first “mission” more like an introduction of the contestan kind of like an “audition”, showing what’s they’re “specialty”, and then start their true mission by having them signing and dancing, and later on have the elimination based from there. If that would have happened people like Adela would have benefited because she would have showcased her full talent. But with the first missions being so “stereotyped” and putting people into categories it made the outsiders Believe that if you were chosen for the dance category you most likely were not good at signing and vice versa, and there were a few girls that were good at both

Neeko

LOL i think the good thing about reacting to this later instead of when it just came out is people have had time to chill out and realize that we're getting real, raw and authentic reactions from behind the scenes. Hopefully the comments don't get crazy but when this episode came out, Twitter was in an uproarrrr, especially towards Adela, Sophia and Lara. And now look at them, thriving and flourishing in the world of music.

Lindseyyyyy

I do think Adela is better off as a solo artist and I think katseye is perfect the way it is now. I love watching y’all watch this though and I can’t wait to see who y’all choose as your bias!

C

I am loving watching this with you! I have stayed away prior but this docu is extremely very fascinating

I hope you react to their Asian Tour Vlog when you finish Pop Star Academy <3

Pari

I just now noticed the bucked hat with all the girls names on missy

Maria

Anyone else notice them clip in someone else saying "Adela" while Missy was talking about her? "Since the beginning all the girl's have been intimated by *Adela*" It's between 30:45-30:50 in this video. They're definitely chopping some audio up LOL
