N.T. Stars

"It's in the transcripts. 😭" One of my favorite line readings from this show. Jimmy's kicking Chuck while he's down here, just because he didn't realize the full extent of the consequences he had to face. Feels like something that slime ball Saul Goodman would do!

“Slip into…” 🥁Slipping Jimmy slipping into Saul Goodman! Nice one Jordan 🙌

Jimmy lies by telling the truth. His most significant cons always involve weaponizing his real feelings, that's why he's such a successful con artist. Because his tears are real! It's just that he can only express his real feelings when it's in the service of a scheme. I think he started crying for real, and then to protect himself from the emotions he was feeling he internally went "Um, actually I meant to do that!" and pivoted to using his tears as a weapon. What you gradually learn about Jimmy is that he uses all these layers of irony and performance in order to distance himself from emotions that are too painful to face. The scene at the end in the insurance office is like Jimmy’s equivalent of one of Walt’s Bond Villain set pieces, like the train heist or assassinating Gus. It’s a really intricate monologue with several different layers of performance happening simultaneously. It’s very ambiguous when Jimmy is being manipulative and when he is being sincere, not only to the viewer, but I think even to Jimmy himself. In my opinion, Jimmy is a fascinating subversion of the typical prestige anti-hero genre, which usually centers around macho men having crises of machismo. His supervillain powers are empathy and emotional intelligence. He’s incredibly cheerful and optimistic, charming, and funny, and friendly, and nurturing, and sweet, like the exact inverse of Walter White. And yet, in a completely different way from Walt, he is a menace to society.

Holy shit, well said!! You're really good at analyzing the complexities of these characters. It adds so much to the series when you can pick up on these things, so thank you

Nacho is a hardened criminal; yet Mike had to coach him to swap Hector's pills back in this little scheme of his. Jimmy needed no such coaching when it came to swapping back the doctored Mesa Verde documents. Interesting. After Jimmy's stunt at the insurance office, I'm not sure how anyone can be pro-one brother and ant-the other brother in this whole Chuck and Jimmy conflict. A lot of Jimmy's misdeeds come from a well meaning place, but he causes chaos and damage everywhere he goes, and still seems oblivious when he gets called out on it. And Chuck is definitely an asshole, but just about anything he's accused Jimmy of he is 100% right about, even if he doesn't have proof. Right back to Jimmy stealing from their parents' corner store. Really, this whole escalation is just the tragic dissolution of a once close family relationship. And only when you once felt close to or love for someone can you get so turned around to hate each other as much as Chuck and Jimmy hate each other. Almost caught up to the week by week Season 4 reactions, glad I will be caught up in time for the final two seasons!

5-star reaction, though there would have been bonus points if you’d been willing to discuss squat cobbler. Jordan’s idea that Kim was talking directly to us, when she said about Chuck, “As far as I'm concerned, all we did was tear down a sick man”: all my griping about y’all not having sympathy for Chuck – I had the advantage of Kim already having said that to me. Who knows how I thought about it first time viewing? Anyway, good insight.
