Hi everyone! It's horror time again... but this time in SPACE! A few of you said that this was your all time favourite horror movie and I can see why now. We both absolutely loved it! So as always, thank you so so so much for suggesting and voting for us to watch it! I know there's a second one that's also well regarded, so I'm super excited to watch that one too eventually!

Alien - Patreon Version

Cuppa tea and Cadbury cream egg at the ready, 4K disc loaded and lights turned off. Let’s go!

James Hadden

The set design, creature designs, lighting, atmospheric music and sound, stunning cinematography, feelings of claustrophobia and amazing tension building - these are why I personally rate this a masterpiece. I think it is a law that everyone has to follow this up with the sequel Aliens, you can’t just stop at the first one 😁

James Hadden

If you do end up watching Aliens there are two versions, like the original in fact (I was watching the director’s cut before realising I’d gone out of sync). The special edition of Aliens adds some nice additional scenes (with one exception IMO) and overall the version I personally prefer over the theatrical cut

James Hadden

You asked for suggestions of movies in a similar vein, so here’s a few of my personal favourites (some more in line than others): The Descent Monsters A Quiet Place Super 8 Plus a couple of classics in case you haven’t seen them: Predator Jaws

MaplenutsReact

Haha yeeess!! That sounds like the best way to watch this!

MaplenutsReact

I totally agree, masterpiece worthy! And yes, we're absolutely going to watch the next one on the channel too!

MaplenutsReact

Oh! I'm sorry, we should have clarified which version we were watching! I'll update the video title at least :)

James Hadden

No need to apologise, if nothing is specified then the assumption should be theatrical version. I’d just forgotten that my disc version defaults to directors cut. I did wonder though if it was possible to reduce the blur slightly as it’s incredibly difficult to sync up when not going by the timer? Don’t worry if not

MaplenutsReact

Oh yes, we can totally do that! For the next movie we'll reduce it, and if it's still not enough just let us know! :)

James Hadden

Great, thanks. Some movies are easier than others. Scenes with big changes in colour blocks and lighting help, but especially tricky in moody dark ones

This movie and a couple of other 70's films introduced the concept of blue-collar space workers. Eventually this became the "space trucker" trope in film and television.🧑‍🚀 I know that's Sir Ian Holm but I've never thought of him as Bilbo when rewatching this. Hilarious that he's going on a really long journey again. 🧝🏼‍♂️ Loved your reaction when they revealed that Ash isn't human and really was working against them all along like you thought. This is a beautifully shot film that is great at building horrific suspense. 🌌🚀🌌 "Everybody needs a blowtorch"

whoop first film watch along with you. the looks on both of of your faces as the alien popped out to say hey how you doing im going to kill you all when im grown up. this film scared the f out of me when i was little if you not seen critters thats a comedy alien thingy

The Descent is a perfect follow-up to this. Small group of people, confined spaces...expert direction and pitch-perfect performances. A must-see(but just make sure it's the "unrated" original UK cut. There are two cuts, the US version has a shorter[by like a minute] ending, but it makes a world of difference to the story.)

James Hadden

Apparently the US ending was the same at release before being changed (reason for which might be considered spoilery so I’ll leave it there). The less impactful alternative ending might be the only one available on streaming services now. This is probably my only reason left to still champion physical media - it doesn’t get messed with behind the scenes after release

MaplenutsReact

Ha! You're right, another long journey for Bilbo, but this one seems a lot less fun for him hahaha.

When I saw the Alien for the first time I was very terrified, I still remember the scene where the Facehugger jumped from the egg, I jumped from my seat 😂. I hope you guys get to react to Aliens it’s very good I like it more than the first. One of my faverite ‘Special Effects’ film is Starship Troopers it was made late 1990s or The Fly 1986.

MaplenutsReact

Oooh! We're planning on watching Starship Troopers soon actually!

MaplenutsReact

Hahaha yeah I couldn't believe that little alien thing! Oooo a comedy alien movie sounds fun!

I just watched this on YouTube cos I don't have the theatrical cut. I enjoyed the edited version anyway. It was nice to see you both. This was the first day since I joined that I had any time to watch you... and I watched you on YouTube lol. Oh well, I had a lot of fun and I enjoyed your company and that's what it's all about. Thank you both.

Finally got around to watching this whole thing instead of just listening to your afterthoughts. What a fun reaction! When Chandra said, "That looks like the alien head," and then it turned out to be the alien head, I laughed so hard. Brilliant creative choice there. This is another one of those movies with an incredible tagline that, like with Independence Day, has always stuck with me: "In space, no one can hear you scream." I love the effects in this film, but I particularly like the design on the Xenomorph (the alien's large form). It's scary, but it's also kind of beautiful, with how sleek and smooth the head is, and how efficient it is as a predator. Haha, I know, I sound like Ash, way too fascinated with such a terrifying thing. Since you guys were asking how they made the alien look so good and how it moved and stuff, that was mostly achieved with practical effects--with an animatronic alien, I believe. This came out in 1979. That they could do things like that and make it look so real back then just boggles the mind. Several things were done in the scene to help it look more real, like keeping it mostly in the dark with only flashes of light, keeping the alien's coloring dark or black, and giving it a metallic appearance that helped it stand out in the bright flashes or the low lighting. They also rarely showed the entire thing at once, and kept the shots that did show it few, and brief. They did an amazing job, and keeping it mostly practical is why it still holds up today. Oh, since you were looking for other movies that have effects like that, and also for a movie that has a group of people fighting scary things, I'm going to repeat a recommendation I gave in that list of movies I sent. You guys really need to see Jurassic Park. I won't say more on that one, because I don't want to spoil, but that movie is so far up your alleys it's not funny. Also, also, another thing, because you asked. There are no movies with an alien Santa, as far as I know (LMAO), but how about a very different, badass Santa? You guys might want to check out Violent Night. I've never gotten around to seeing that one, but I've heard a lot of good things about it, and it sounds like something you'd love. The poster is awesome, and yes, you can look at it without spoiling, although I wouldn't go any further before watching it. I won't say anything more on it, so you can be surprised, but if you watch it, I'd be down for it.

MaplenutsReact

I love how you said the design of the Alien is scary, but also somehow beautiful. I never thought of it that way, but you're so right! Also, I can't believe they MADE an animatronic alien... that's so cool! I wonder if it's still hanging around somewhere in a warehouse! And thank you for the movie recommendations ❤️❤️❤️

My husband and I saw this in the theater when it came out, and it was as you suggested very scary, very claustrophobic as the movie moved along. When it was over we left the theater and we didn't talk about the movie at all and we always talked about the movies we'd just seen. Fantastic scenery, practical special effects... still gives me the shivers! Someone below suggested reducing the blur in your display to make it easier to sync up. I'm subscribed to someone on Patreon who shows the actual image every 30 minutes for 30 seconds I think, and that makes it easier.
