I can’t believe what we just watched!!!

A piece of art would be the only answer. I can’t work out if I’m more impressed by the way the story unfolds mixed with the cinematography or the fact that this is all happening in front of our eyes, advance techniques may I just add in 1976! Most movies back then were medium shots or medium-close ups.

Like I mention in the beginning before we played the tape, I’d never even heard of this movie before let alone find out it’s classed as a Horror masterpiece. It’s an interesting one that because it really is a masterpiece visually, artistically and everything in between but I didn’t feel like we were watching a horror movie. Perhaps that only adds to the charm and experience of it. Then again, this is 1976!

Horror has been pulled and stretched way beyond the origins of the genre.

Some of the facts:

We’ve got cameras on tracks with markers for points A to then B following the subject.

Optical zooms which I don’t normally like as it makes it look video, this they were doing whilst moving so you didn’t even notice it. Brilliant!!

Diopter lenses or filters being used. Characters at different focal lengths yet looked as if they were on top of each other. Made you literally feel how Carrie feels.

Pro mist filters or some fog filter to push Carrie feeling isolated. Love that!

ECU - Extreme Close Ups allowing us to be connected to characters, objects or using it to help the flow of storytelling.

Sexualised imagery yet didn’t feel like smut or purely for a touch of voyeurism. ART!

Clever flip on the horror trope of blood being spilt in the opening act. I don’t think I’ve ever seen something like that before or done so cleverly.

The acting for a movie made in the 70s, normally they’re as stiff as a 5-day old dead body but in this movie, chefs kiss! A touch of class.

As you can tell, this was amazing and thank you so much to all those who suggested this… well… Masterpiece.

This is ESSENTIAL WATCHING! So… Play the Tape!

Joe Crammond

do you plan on doing the recent tv series from Carrie, see how it gets adapted for the modern age

Kai Zammit - Filmmaker Reacts

I'm not at a stage to cover any TV shows currently. I would be pushing my luck on time management etc. I do want to and I will eventually cover TV shows but not yet. Is it any good Joe? I loved this movie so much that there is a part of me saying do not check out a modern adaptation. Interesting that.

it depends on who you ask really, some aren't so keen but i liked it, more screen time helps to flesh out the characters, modern day technology changes the bullying

Carl Weatherford

i watched the first 3 mins or so and once i realised they framed the mother as an innocent victim of the evil man of the house i stopped. excusing the mothers actions for real life political reasons is to much of a change for that charactor in my opinion.

Wow this movie was surprisingly good. I especially had a completely different idea of what this movie was before watching it since it was always said to be a horror. Not quite the horror I was expecting, glad I watched it though

Local Degenerate

you really should watch the the rest of it. I like the way they handled the mother in the tv show then in the movie. It's an entirely different character, and imo a way more interesting one. If you didn't stop after the three minutes and stuck with it, you would see that imo. Having a character like Carries' mom be loving at times and also at times entirely correct. But ultimately despite this makes decisions in response that are selfish and harmful in ways she cannot see due to her warped perception of the world and what being a parent is. Is far more interesting then a plainly evil mom. There are a lot of things you can dog on the show for doing, but making Carrie's mom a multi-layered character is not one of them. She is both protective and loving to Carrie, but unreasonably cruel and at certain cases overtly selfish. It makes Carrie's relationship with her mom feel way more tragic, toxic, and relatable for some. However, other then this. I do have issues with the tv show too.

I love how big of a perv you are. 😄

Man I just remember as a kid being super scared of this movie but watching it now with my rookie film lenses it was great it really felt like art. That spinning shot at the prom was so awesome

One of my favorite movies! Watched for the first time at 14-15, saw it around the same time as Skyfall, those are what got me into filmmaking initially!

James Nyman

@Carl Weatherford If you watched more of the show, then you would definitely realize that they are not going in that route. They made her a complex character with real human like traits, but they still show she is evil. They also make the husband more lovable than the mom so I don't know where you got the take they framed him as an evil man except for the fact he was paranoid. It was a phenomenal show with major flaws only popping up in the end because of source material change. You should give the show a chance before assuming the worst.

I line you could have said: "Are we watching Robocock?" Because a lot of porn movies have parody versions of movies.

The music in this reminds me of old Russ Meyer movies.

I didn't know that the male teacher in the beginning was one of the patients in "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest". I loathe Nurse Ratched so much.
