Great serie selection

Exterminator4u

I’ve been meaning to watch this show for ages! I keep hearing good things and this era has always been fascinating too from a history perspective so I’m sure it’s gonna be a fun watch. Thanks for posting this

aaarskog

Great choice!

Jef Etters

I remember liking this. I’m happy to rewatch and it seems not many reactors do this one👍

CrashTestWalrus

Oh yeah, hot Katie is part of this one. Great reason to look forward to the Fridays

Lokior

This show is very interesting backstory behind it. So it's only two season due to budget issues and how expensive this show was at the time(most expensive before Game of Thrones). It's a very beautiful and accurate show with a giant budget which stopped it from being it's intended 5 seasons

Vogonpoet

For those that are interested, I recommend I, Claudius. It's a show about the Roman emperors that rise to power following the events of this series. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I,_Claudius_(TV_series). In total, Rome and I, Claudius cover about 90 years of the first Roman emperors in the principate era. This Mike Duncan podcast covers the entire history of Rome. It's very interesting and worth listening to if your into history. I think this series takes place in the time line of videos 8-10 on the playlist. Has spoilers, I suppose, but history is already known. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItwGz43a_ak&list=PLEb6sGT7oD8EdpWRp7oEgwvyZtFH4dFsC Roman History with box animations on maps and drawing. It's actually really good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9qlNBBoFG4&list=PLODnBH8kenOrjXjWy7Hhkz9uOpZ3NTAow

Never seen this show before. Looking forward to watching it with you guys.

Great reaction. You recognised the actor playing the young Octavian from Master & Commander, where he played Midshipman Lord Blakeney .

Armarbu

Cesar was the same actor who played the king of the wildlings in Got

Patrick

Munchies Exulte! Hell yeahh it's about time for a rewatch of this great show, this is gonna be awesome!

Johnny Sondergard

Yesssss 👍😁😊😊 this so awesome, I ❤️👌this serie

Patrick

Such a fitting follow up to where Rome HBO leaves off and truly one of the best shows Britain has made. Absolutely brilliant performances by master class theatre actors, great sets and an incredible depiction of the intrigues and drama of one of the most messed up families in all of history 🔥

Fff

One of the best shows of all time.

Greg Nelson

The last scene was the burning of the legion’s camp. The Roman army was an engineering machine. Every camp was built like a fortress city, and was burned after use so the enemy couldn’t occupy it. So glad you are watching this, and you picked up on all the important points. Atia, Octavia’s and Octavian’s mother, is a real piece of work.

Andrew

The actor playing Titus Pullo is Ray Stevenson. Died back in 2023 right after giving us one of the best grey jedi the starwars series has ever seen. And you guys saw him in King Arthur, and he was one of Thor's warrior friends (the fat one). And many other things. RIP Ray!

Red Spengler

Ah, Game of Thrones but real life.

King Bob

oh we gonna watch Rome i can't wait ....😛

John

I am so glad that you’re reacting to this series. All of the main characters were real people. What is interesting is that Vorenus & Pullo were the only two “common” soldiers or plebians that Caesar mentioned in his writings.

Hello Munchies !! YES !! I may have never saw the show (I was too young , my parents didn't allowed it. I can see why I was barely 10 year old), But it's one of my favorites part of the history!! (and you know how much of an enjoyer I am for history). as promised, I'll limit my comment to what you need to know or the "big difference with reality". Because, the context is fast, deep and extremely complex and lot of things can be missed or misunderstood wthout some knowledge of the political system or background. So i'll do my best to not exagerated, as we agreed earlier. (either way, each comment will be a book!😅) If the show is accurate to reality, you'll ended up thinking that GOT's scheme and backstabbing was "for begginer and easy to follow" in comparaison! 😅they're really a big bunch of viper and schemer all of them! 😂😁 Let's discover it! As you spoke about "exposed bodies". If you want my honest opinion. we do too much nudity now... sometimes they do it when it's no even needed or adding anything except "look here! we know you like it! we are using your sexual envy to make audience" (at this point it's pornography without accepting the name... and it's not because we don't see "him" inside it not pornograpgy if we read the dictionnary's definition. but as you saw here, the limit is "very blurry"). I misse the old days were we could watch a movie or a show with the children without having to stop because all of sudden we have naked peoples...Or sometimes, you really wonder "why do we need to see it?". For decades, the movies worked by making us understand they do it without showing it! why they stopped?? What is even more annoying (for me,) it happen even more with historical and fantasy shows (like "no one can enjoy an historical setting if we don't use it"...)... yeah, we get "used to it" or 'immune to it"as you said. but it's annoying. anyway let's go !! For the episode. Medusa is Greek, but Rome adopted most of greek culture and gods, changing the name and modifying some details. for example, Zeus=Jupiter, Arés= Mars. etc... so Medusa is in their belief. If you wondern the gauls are the modern France, Belgium and part of switzerland. "execute him ! he doesn't obey" Well Chi already know how the Legio is working !! 😂😂 (Oh ,Btw "legio"=army/levies. legionnaries=soldier) Vercingétorix? ok the war of the gaul is already almost over. another year and it's over. but "king of all the gauls" no.... Vercingétorix only managed to assemble a rebelion. but he was never king "of all the gauls" .Only king of the arverni. One tribe amongst many! the gauls were never unified. that's why Caesar succeded to conquer them in 8 years. but i'll stop here.( and what was that helmet for Vercingétorix ???"😂) "at this time, wonen are commodities" Yes and no... Rome was heavely build on Slavery. that's what they are trading.not only women were sold. and spoils of war and slaves trade was the best way to become rich in the army (and in the society overall...) For the women's right, as you see they are tools in political wedding. but they can have a lot of power too. who rules the house and the slaves in the houses, do you think ?😉 so not entirely at disposeable either. well...yes, having slaves around during sex seem to be "normal" when we see some pictures we have found...(some pictures we found in cities were extremely explicit.) Octavian (he's played by Max Pirkis. you saw him in the movie "master and commander") ... but yes his mother and sisters was a mess... even his daughter had some scandal on her !! "illegal war" yes... Caesar had to scheme an "help to an ally in gaul" to justify his war but ended doing way more than he was supposed to do. he literraly transform an "help" to "conquest". And legally, he did the war without the senate's authorization. he just goes in without asking the permision to raise new legion! But the senate was always very afraid to lose his power to the people's partisans ( called "populares"). because the senators are all amongst the oldest and weakthiest famillies of Rome (called "optimates"). the political fight between those two are the base of all the roman republic's politics. I'm sure you can understand the stituation with that. Yes, the roman/greek theater had a lot of sexual joke too. I know, I had to see one in school (as teenager!). Steal the eagle of a legion, nothing is more deshonoring for a legion. their eagles is their flag! 'but why the gauls are blue ?? unless it's for hiding in the dark , it's stupid... Crucifiction was a common way to execute people. but not in the hand, but in the wrist. (either way the hand is rip in pieces...) Yes, the letter was to his "lover". The one he "loved". If I understand well. I don't remember hearing about her. "I call them cult not religion" but it was thier religion. sacrifying animals was perfectly normal. some where even do in public for the whole "nation". but like that?? it's exagerated...having blood on you, yes. but not like that. never saw that before in all I read! "that's me! i'm her" He just explained is old victory. the episode really skipped Pompey's background and all his military and political success. he already had a very big career. way bigger than Caessar before the war in gauls. Has centurion (so officer) he must wait the end of his military service to marry in normal time. "this boy could be a fututre king"....😉😂😂 you'll see!!! his future is "surprising" in history☺️ "they burn the all city" not the city.. the camp. the legion always build a new camp each evening and destroy it when leaving to not let the ennemy be able to use it. For the conclusion So for me: the show is romantizing and imagining a lot of thing (mostly all the eagle's story and Octavian's kidnaping.no need to say that the 2 soldiers are fiction! 😉) and lot of thing are "fantasize" (how the gauls are clothed, the sacrifice,) but for the political aspect, we have the main point, despite skipping a lot of background of the character. but it's clearly the most accurate legion I have ever saw for now. But it begin well !! and to be honest, even if all the sexe in it may be overused for the show, it fit pretty well the way of living of the romans. Hard to sey thing without risking spoils as I know the outcome in History. althouh they seem to take liberties. but it's alright for now. (still more accurate than "Vikings" 😁) Eager to see the rest with you! Have a beautifull day Munchies!

np86

actually Katie, you named the right movie but pointed out the wrong actor. The one from King Aurthur was Titus. The soldier who got whipped. He played Dagonet (Dag). He got killed on the ice lake. He was also in RRR. Also the actor who is playing Octavian, the actor Chi had a hard time remembering, is Max Pirkis. He's from Master and Commander Far Side of the World. He was the kid who's arm got cut off. I almost didn't recognize him either.

tommy23

Great choice! Keep on rockin

Armarbu

The man playing Caesar is the same actor who played the King-Beyond-the-Wall in *Game of Thrones*.

Kris Wustrow

YES YES -- what a surprise -- and now we begin! The most expensive TV series ever produced...

King Bob

yeah Ray Stevenson has been in a lot of things; he was even in the Indian movie RRR that was just on. He had a full career. I was in marvel movies like "Thor" and "Thor Dark World" He was also in a lot of Hit TV Shows - "Dexter " and "Black Sails"

King Bob

Mance Rayder

lee eames

Forgot how great this series was.

Jeffrey Roberts

Yeeeessss! Great series! Can't wait to see this again.

Rob M

Bravo for watching this series! It sucks that they couldn't do more seasons, but this show was so well done. You know a show is good when the episode finishes but you don't realize nearly an hour has passed. There is another show called "Spartacus" (2010) that is just as good--arguably better. I won't say much about it to avoid spoilers, but it tells a generally accurate story of the time of the gladiators and their rebellion. There is a fair amount of nudity in it--fair warning--and it does have some gruesome fights and torture (Rome was fun back then 😜). The main actor that played Spartacus died during the series from cancer, but the new actor did an amazing job taking on the role. There are 33 episodes for the regular show, plus 6 more episodes of a prequel to the regular show. Keep up the great reactions Munchies and have a good weekend!

Eric Muirhead

The story is LOSELY based on the two main characters mentioned briefly in history but we don't really know much about them, but the major events in the series is more accurate to history.

John

As you said mentioned briefly by Caesar, safe to say that they were highly thought of that they were mentioned at all.

Eric Muirhead

"I won't pick a side". I think that is best when dealing with ancient Rome.

chris brown

Amazing reaction, looking forward to the next episode. After you have finished the 2nd series I'd recommend I, Claudius (1976)

King Bob

i actually think 2 was enough though, 3 seasons was compressed into the last 4 episodes

tommy23

I won't spoil it for you, but young Octavian grows to be a great man of history. Stick with this one, girls. This series gets better as it goes. Keep on rockin

2026-09-28 02:00 Dear Ladies, Thank you for your excellent reaction. This series is new to me too, and I'm looking forward to watching along with you. As mentioned above, I also recommend the 1976 BBC series 'I, Claudius'. It features a legendary performance by Derek Jacobi as Claudius. Also delivering great performances are Brian Blessed as Augustus (the older Octavian,) Sian Phillips (Livia,) and John Hurt (as the older Caligula). Brian Blessed is also in the cult movie 'Flash Gordon' which has been previously recommended to your channel. John Hurt was in the movie 'Alien.' Watch for Patrick Stewart in a couple of episodes. Stewart is known for his role in 'Star Trek the Next Generation' and as Professor Xavier in the X-Men films. 'I, Claudius' has all the elements of a great series: witty dialog, power, sex, violence, and fun.

Octavian also known as emperor Augustus

jin

Great series, and good instinct on Octavian. He would be very famous. The ending he burned his army's camp, which means he won't come back there.

Fff

Your lack of historical knowledge is going to make this a very fun series, heh. First time I saw someone aww over CAESAR. Good stuff.

Javier Ochoa

Good choice 👍🏻 this show is like the titanic movie 🍿 it’s reality mixed with fiction 🤔🤔👍🏻👍🏻😎😎

Movie Munchies

Ahh thank you for clearing that up! 😊 We completely mixed up the actors there.

Movie Munchies

We’re so glad you’re excited to watch it with us! 😊❤️ We’ve been really enjoying it so far, and we hope you have a great time watching along!

excellent - I've been considering getting in to I, Claudius - i think my hesitation has been I wonder if it's one of those things that is well remembered but might not have benefitted from what the industry has learned in terms of pacing and what grips an audience. based on your endorsement of the excellent podcast by Duncan, and obviously appreciating HBO's Rome - I'll add your recommendation of I, Claudius to my to-watch-list. GRRM cited it as excellent and cited the depiction of Tiberius as inspiration for his (writing the book version of) Stannis Baratheon. I hope GRRM isn't planning on ruining the character of Stannis the way HBO did!

JamesCAMH

good reaction, THIS. I read it yesterday at that critical point in swallowing my drink, where the threshold to sudden bursting guffaw laughter is lowered, and I got Diet Coke on my keyboard so it's been sitting upside down while I've been using my iPad for work. Worth it, legionary.

Shattered Shadows

I am so happy this made it through and you guys are reacting to it. Its one of my favorite HBO shows and almost no one else has done reactions for it or if they have it was mostly cut down to a 15min reaction

Katie Davis

So excited that you're watching this!

Dale Laughlin

This show was fairly accurate with names peaple even the foods they talk about the rome empire heavily inspired the modern age we all live in

Dale Laughlin

Well if yay don't know history this show will give you a crash course in it a lot of medieval theatre plays were based on the historical events that happen in this show a lot of this actually happened
