Yes! I've been waiting for this Semi-Ramblo! Thank you for articulating the problem with stories like this so well Yahtz.

That line about the static and imagining the picture... Accidentally describing how ai image generation works 😂😅

I see the argument but also the lack of those straightforward stories and the construction of them both are matters of execution. You can play the Wolverine game or even the COD and Gears of War games, they all have straightforward stories, but those stories are shit. Short Message is not really a lore story necessarily, but it’s badly paced with gameplay and its exposition is not actually that good for a story of an abused young girl coming to fall in love with her best friend and leading into bullying of another friend of hers and the best friend which caused that one friend’s suicide, and almost(?) her own suicide, or if we are to say this is hell and you suffer until you self actualize, she killed herself after her best friend also killed herself after the other friend killed herself. The story could be simpler, the game is not long, the problem is the game doesn’t tell it well, like, at all

Yes, this exactly. No matter the technical skills or distinct style, people will eventually notice if there is nothing to the story then just a vehicle to keep us moving from scene to scene. Case in point, John Wick series has style and action, but the story is just an excuse to take viewers through a criminal version of Alice in wonderland.

Yahtzee's really gonna piss off all the British fans of Crazy Taxi with this take.

That's why I glaze the story of lies of P, it doe that "hide the lore in item description" but makes it clear what you have to do and why in general

I feel compelled to nitpick on the point about Bloodborne a little, if only because it's a top 3 game of all time for me. The basic story, I think, is at least as legible as the first Dark Souls -- the player character has come to Yharnam seeking blood ministration to cure themselves. You end up joining the hunt and the rest of the plot plays out from there, basically in the same fashion as Dark Souls -- kill the big monsters to end the hunt and cure yourself . From there, of course, you can dig into the whole background of Byrgenwerth college, the Choir, the Pthumerians, the Old Ones, etc. Hell, a lot of the main points on those issues come directly from character dialogue, not just item descriptions and the like.
