When Caroline sees Bennett's file she says "I bet she can kill you with her brain", this is a quote from River in Firefly, she says it to Jayne, "also I can kill you with my brain"...

The thing with Boyd is that it makes perfect sense, there even was a dialogue a few episodes ago in which Echo asks him why she trusts him, if it was because she was programmed to, and he says that it's because he has a nice face... I always think of this dialogue, because we too as an audience were programmed to trust him no matter what. Even when Echo was a highly skilled "people reader" she completely dismissed any concern for Boyd, she says "she trusts him for some reason", and we dont even second guess her.

This final stretch of episodes (the back half of season 2) is really some of my favorite tv ever. Just top notch TV. I do think that the first half of season 1 is a little bit slow but it does set the stage well. I think I even told you back then, that you have no idea how much this show changes and what it becomes. I don't know if the Boyd thing tracks when watching the early episodes of season 1 especially. I always wondered when they made that decision. I'm guessing that they knew during season 2 but not sure about season 1. But this show is such a fascinating re-watch after you know all the twists and try to track them in real time.

That Boyd reveal was super polarizing at the time it aired. A lot of people felt it wasn't earned or rushed, not to mention the people who felt straight up betrayed. I can see the "rushed' perspective to a degree. They didn't have a real choice though since they knew they were done. Ultimately think it works & still packs quite a punch. When we first meet Boyd he seems to be the only good guy in the Dollhouse. It makes us trust him even more since so many of the other leads or important characters are loathsome at the time. We shouldn't trust him. Everything we see even early on shows that nothing is what it seems within the Dollhouse. His relationship with Echo is so paternal & loving that it clouds our judgement. That makes it hurt so much more.

Everything with Boyd makes his relationship with Claire/Whiskey/Dr. Saunders so deeply gross & weird too.

This is my first time watching and I’m not sure how I feel about this reveal

We're conditioned as Whedonverse fans to trust the mentor-mentee dynamic, i.e., the smart guy protecting the powerful girl. It's why I really like Boyd as the big bad. It's an added layer of betrayal.

This episode leaves a ton to unpack. The show bringing back so many important characters (i.e. Dr. Saunders, Dominic, Bennett & Clive Ambrose) really hyped up that the story is finally coming to a close and we better buckle up. When this first aired Whedon made it clear that Boyd was always going to be the big bad, and if the show had gotten more time they would have slowly dropped more and more clues to his real role in the show. We also would have seen more build up with Rossum executives like Ambrose & Clyde 2.0. It's clear in retrospect that Boyd's recent "personal matters" was him tracking down Claire, having her reprogrammed to be loyal to him and follow his orders and then getting her ready to return to the Dollhouse if he needed her. Boyd clearly didn't want Bennett restoring Caroline's memories of him as Rossum's CEO, but Claire killed her too late and it will be interesting to see how Boyd deals with the fallout of this reveal. It is poetic because Boyd is one of the only characters that Echo was programmed to trust, he has always looked out for her and now it seems he had an ulterior motive the entire time.

The Senator Perrin arc was supposed to be all of Season 2. When they found out the show was cancelled, they truncated it and used the rest of the season to fast-track the endgame. There was definitely a lot more to explore. Alpha definitely would have played a bigger role in the overall series, but with 7 episodes to close out the story, some storylines and character arcs had to end up on the cutting room floor. It's unclear whether Boyd being the man behind it all was intended from the beginning or was one of those bolts of inspiration that hit once the show was up and running. There are a few moments early on that ALMOST contradict this. They still work but they really strain the suspension of disbelief. Still, it works in the end, and it's such a crazy twist that there's plenty of incentive to just roll with it. The number of threads that payoff and come together in this episode is CRAZY. I always forget that the reveal of Claire and Boyd, Claire's murder of Bennett, and Boyd's big reveal are in the same episode. Because how much else could they possibly cram in? Oh, right... Caroline's origin story, the truth about her falling out with Bennett, the return of Mr. Dominic... this shit it crazy.
