In 2023 Vixen, Aloha, and I played a game called "Dokapon Kingdom".

The idea of this game is great! But its actual design is so bad that I became... obsessed with it, spending 500+ hours studying, researching, and gathering footage to make into a giant video in the vein of "Let's Make a Pokemon Game" and "Let's Make an Animal Crossing Game."

The video has sat unfinished for ages, knocked to the side by my international move.

It would take 4+ months of work to finish, and that's time I'd rather be spending on Epithet. So it shall forever remain incomplete.

This is the first 20 minutes of a two hour long video. 50 minutes of full Video Essay are blocked out and edited and the last hour is audio-only.

WATCH THE FULL VIDEO HERE in the $15 tier. This video will never be released outside of Patreon and will always remain an exclusive.

The art assets commissioned for this video can be found here.

If there was ever a game you streamed that deserves the disrespect of not bothering to finish it's Dokapon. What did get done looks good af tho I'm excited to see the rest of it! That Money Game sequence was so good it made me forget how much everyone suffered playing it for a minute.

This might be the thing that makes me bump up a tier for next month after my current tier runs out. I adore learning people's processes, your editing streams are a lovely watch/listen when I'm working. Seeing a, not unfinished, but an unrevised and unfinalized work of one of your reviews would be a lovely time. Thank you for sharing it, your time is definitely worth putting this in the other tier. I'm surprised the UFO50 one wasn't. Though then less people would get to hear about UFO50 Especially if this was acting as a mental block for other projects your brain really wants to devour like a horde of ants on a sugar cube.

So far i pretty much agree with this, and yet i also think its kind of what makes Dokapon charming. Dokapon is always an experience. Its beloved because its torturous. Not that i think you're wrong in saying someone could swoop in and make a genuinely good Doka-like and be successful. Just that I also think that despite Dokapon kind of sucking, its existence not just in its uniqueness but in its fucked up-ness is part of its literal charm. I know that sounds like an excuse to say "youre wrong my game is perfect" but its not cause i dont like Dokapon for one, but also because I would eat up a Wargroove to Dokapon's Advance Wars at the same time that I kind of like that Dokapon sucks. Its like wabi-sabi kind of.

Oh hell yes, I've looked forward to the Dokapon video for so long!! I think this is the best possible thing you could have done, if it's just not feasible to finish then release it in its unfinished form. This is such an awesome thing to do, most creators would never!

"Universally, people love Dokapon Kingdom. This is a well regarded game, and I feel crazy" See it's just cos it kinda stands out as the only one in its genre. "Party game but absurdly hard and friendship ruining" is a rare thing. So the audience just generally settles for it not being GREAT at doing that, cos nobody else is doing it at all. And even with this very rudimentary, limited amount of ways to fuck over other players there's still been lots of very funny and popular let's plays. I can only imagine how much better it'd be if everyone could play your hypothetical fixed version!

The lack of music and sound effects make it feel like a very critical Noah Caldwell Gervais video

The reason why this game is liked is Stockholm syndrome

This is the nicest thing anyone has ever said about something I've made

I have been waiting for MONTHS to switch from Yearly lottle friend tier to a monthly axolotle friend tier and now I wish I could just switch it today

JelloApocalypse

I was wondering how this worked. That sucks that it locks you to a tier :(

Copacetic_Cloud

I would give an arm and a leg for a full version of that Money Game cover. Also, weird to hear you without three different layers of sound effects at any given moment. Not bad, thought, I know the content is the same, but it makes you sound slightly more legitimate, whatever that means.

Tanner Bailey

It would be fine if I could afford the yearly axolotle tier, but I just gotta wait. It'll expire in september so I'll see it then

May I ask, whats wrong with a random number being generated at the start of your turn, in comparison to constantly refreshing? Or is that in the full video? Cause, like. An unknown number rolled once is just as unknown as an uknown number that refreshes every tick. It might be me, that sees rng manipulation via reloading saves as cheating? The candyland analogy is still apt though

PurpleIsDebeste

its just another thing that makes the game feel more predetermined and less like your choices matter, cus even when you press the button on the spinner is irrelevant

JelloApocalypse

This is the first bullet point in a long list of examples showing that the player has basically zero control over where they move, what they do, what they do to their friends, and what happens to any of them. Which is bad. The game plays itself. The analogue equivalent would be a game that uses dice, but the player doesn't get to roll them. Most of the times a player uses dice they don't have control over where it lands, but they do have control over the throw. Taking away even that small amount of tactile feedback and agency just one of many stabs in the death-of-a-thousand-cuts that is Dokapon's shitty gameplay experience.

While not a Co-op Versus game, i'm kinda reminded of For The King

I'm gonna save the big video as a reward for later

Bonnford

Because the animation is a spinner that you have to press a button to stop. It's making you think you have actual control over what you roll, but you don't. That spinner will always give the same number and there's no skill involved. That's why it feels bad from a player perspective, it probably wouldn't suck so much if it just immediately gave you the number, or played the animation automatically without requiring a button press. That'd be super clear about what's really happening.

Bonnford

I wonder if this comment summoned the Disgaea one being announced lol. If that ends up being better Dokapon I will be SO STOKED

GuidingLark

Fair enough, I can accept that it is something emblematic of a larger problem, that being the overall lack of control, even if its only noticeable if you are tearing the game at the seams for an autopsy like this.
