Sweatin' to the Great Oldies

I've been looking forward to finally hearing this one. It did not disappoint. Many thanks, gents!

I remember you mentioning that blind date on a show years ago, though I don’t remember the exact circumstances. This time it was definitely relevant to the story. Thank you, that’s exactly the kind of dating advice I keep coming back for 😎

Alan Ricks

So this is the basis for the Underworld movie series.

I read the original paper back of the monster club book when I was a teen way back in the early 1980s. It had a profound effect on my understanding of monsters. It had never occurred to me that vampires and werewolves and other monsters might be just like me in regards to their everyday interaction with each other and the world 🌎 To me, a family of vampires with a humdrum work a day suburban life was even more fascinating than a super wealthy count living in a castle. It raised so many questions in my mind. I really l loved this book and still do. I even have a signed first edition hardcover from 1975. Life is good ❤️

I’m really glad you’re splitting this in two. The back half’s tonal shift deserves its own discussion.

I lived in London for three years in the early 70's as a kid. I can confirm that many adults bathed once a week and considered that normal. My British stepfather, a gentlemanly educator and crafter, bathed twice a week religiously despite not being religious. There was a bit of stuffy pong on the third day. Interesting to make this a fish out of water story instead of a rivalry like the Underworld mentioned upstream.

I missed out on the teenaged experience of this book. But it sure did make me think of Harlan Elison's "The Belonging Kind." The monsters in that are stranger than here but there was that same danger and hint of romance.

Jim Cannon

Real Munsters vibe. A Frankenstein marries a vampire and they have a werewolf for a kid, that kind of thing. Werewolves are infected, but vampires are born? What a weird set-up. Looking foward to the back half.

Very reassuring to learn that I’m not the only one who’s been singing “Revelations in Black” on a loop for the past week! It’s actually turned into the hook for a new song I’m writing. I’ll be sure to give credit on the album! 🫠

Whe. You said that this story took place in the 70’s I eneded up reading this but imagining the settings from that Dark Shadows television show. That show got pretty convoluted but thank ‘The black man’ that no macrème Owls showed up. TRUE HORROR!

Calling the listeners Strangers is great, but has problems. How about Strangelings?

John Birkel

I love the song “Monsters Rule Ok”. That saxophone is awesome. I watched the movie movie in the early 80’s and I remember the drawings from the ghoul segment really freaked me out

Karl Haikara

I think Chad really needs to turn Revelations In Black into a full song, the little clip at the end truly sounded like the Depeche Mode song that should have come out in the 80s

Steve

I've heard that when you're strange, strangers come out of the rain. Which is exactly how I met Chris Lackey.

Steve

Also, the first time Chris came to my house, he offered to cook eggs. Now I'm starting to understand.

The first time I met my wife was at our university fresher's fair. I was running the roleplaying society stall with my girlfriend and she talked to Paula about joining, which she did. The first thing I said to her was 'Give us a quid then.' We got together seven years later. I'm not sure if that makes the pound a good or a bad investment over seven years.

I bought "The Monster Club" and read it cover to cover in just over 24 hours. While the message of inclusivity and sympathy for those who are different is a nice thought, the book in aggregate is more like an EC Comic, wherein the monsters really are evil and the human characters all suffer ironic fates.

Sludgecrawler

What happened to doing Vampire City this March, Chad?

Great to see you covering Chetwynd-Hayes. A neglected author, I feel, and The Monster Club is a fave film - good old fashion monster fun! Reminded me of those classic Universal monster bubblegum cards that were around in the 60s/70s. Think they were called You'll Die Laughing?

Back in 2002, before I went to the UK for uni my grandmother took me aside and darkly muttered 'Watch out for the English, they only bathe once a week'

The stripping skeleton reminds me that I once saw a horror burlesque show where a zombie stripper lurched around in an undead parody of a sexy dance and ultimately stripped off prosthetic flesh from her face. Good times. My meet-cute: I met my partner almost 15 years ago at an Oktoberfest costume party hosted by mutual friends. (She points out that "beer wench" is a good outfit for meeting people; I for my part had a vaguely steampunk thing going on with German aviator goggles.) We bonded over having costume closets with appropriate outfits at the ready. We talked all night and walked went back to my place to...well, just watch "Torchwood" until she was sober enough to drive, but still. We started dating several weeks later. Bringing all this together: I have a photo from the NecronomiCon Providence 2013 Eldritch Ball of my partner with the same woman who had performed as the zombie stripper, both of whom happened to be wearing homemade shiny, sequined Cthulhu masks. (Hmm. I guess I'm only assuming the zombie stripper used a prosthetic, since the only other time I've ever seen her, she was masked.)

I am more surprised that you have a producer than that one of your fans is The Strangler.

The “how often do you shower” thing came up between me and a guy who was definitely interested in me. I said I showered once every two or three days, and he said he showered twice a day. Then he proceeded to ask me very seriously if I would change my showering habits for my husband once I was married. This of course was a weird thing to ask, especially since we were eating dinner with friends and they were just watching him try to convince me to shower more, just in case my future husband - who knows who it might be? - wanted me to. We weren’t even dating. This was a pre-date public interview.
