Rainy city street for #9! Take your time setting this one up before you paint. Sketch lines for perspective, masking fluid for cars and small highlights, and use a simple color palette so the wet into wet part will go fast. The first wet into wet layer goes fast, but it's also not super detailed. Leave yourself time for the yellow light blooms before the paper dries. Also notice which details matter and let the rest be abstract. The most important aspects are the reflections in the street, perspective with the help of the sidewalk and angles of the rooftops, and the fuzziness of the background buildings. Everything else can be as loose or detailed as you like. If you loose some of your highlights or don't want to use masking fluid, add white paint or gouache at the end. I can't wait to see how you do with this one! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Paper: arches 140 lb cotton 9X12" paper that I've cut into 3X3" pieces, giving me 12 pieces per page.

Cardboard: tape your paper to a movable piece of cardboard so you can lift it and let the color streak down the paper.

Masking fluid: I used here pigmented masking fluid by winsor and newton

Paint: For this project I am using a split primary palette- cad yellow deep, lemon yellow, cad red, magenta, ultramarine blue, cerulean, indigo and sap green. The colors I'm using today are -cad yellow, cad red, ultramarine blue, and perm rose.

Brushes: round 4 and 10 - Princeton brand.

How do print the outline pdf so it fits our 3x3“ paper?

Erin Berlin

Im excited to do this one!

I love this! It makes me long for a good rainy day. I'm in Ohio with all of the snow. So over it.

Mary Ann Williams

Oh my!! 😍 Definitely nervous about this one! It looks so advanced (and gorgeous)! Can't wait to see how mine turns out! 🙏

Susan

Wow! Great lesson.

Nancy Guenther

Yikes! Watched it all the way through. This will be challenging!

Lindsay

Oh goodness, how wonderful. I am terrified of this, let’s go.

Morgan Powis

Oh wow this one is ambitious. I may need to wait until I can get some masking fluid for this one.

Harry Brownsell

Fantastic. I'm behind this week have to catch up!

Jennifer

Inspiration picture #2 is my home 😄. The hotel my husband manages is in the background lol

Stephanie Stearns

What city? It sort of looks like NY but I'm not 100% certain.

Jennifer

We had a brief moment of fame in 2023 because the Titan submersible left from the dock behind the hotel before it imploded.

11:43 there’s a white rabbit on the street hehehe

When I click on the video it takes me to this page, but the video is not at the top. The only way I am able to watch the video is to watch the tiny version on the home screen. Does anyone else have this issue and know how to fix it?

Sabine J

Oh my dear, that was not so easy. I had my difficulties with the so callrd potatoes. On my picture they Look like potatoes. But I try again.

Erin

Wet into wet final boss 🫣

Joalie

Adding yellow resulted in muddy highlights. How can i avoid this?

JL

I use the app “Image Size”. Free and easy to use

It is REALLY helpful to have the final in the corner! Thanks

Wow this looks cool but am behind and know I will need lots of practice ones but is good learning to push the boundaries- am saying this with nervous giggle 🤭 Kristin it is super helpful to have the painting in the corner so we can see so much more of the actual technique of what you are achieving please keep doing those. Watching this was giving me much more understanding and what was happening compared to leading the blind a bit before. Especially when we are not as confident as you so am really grateful and will be more achievable I feel 🙌❤️

Roseanne Therese

It seemed like magic when the city scene appeared! 💕

Your dirty yellow pan is making me a little nuts. lol

Kristin Van Leuven, Your videos/Patreon keep getting better! First- Cheers to the monthly skill theme! I appreciated all the ways you had us practice wet on wet. I can see how much I am learning and building on the skills I have. I have started a working journal with notes and then do the painting on the 3x3 square. The Liked/Learned method.... fellow school teacher ;) Next- I appreciate how you listened to our need for reference photos and have now even added the pic of where we are headed. This has been a game changer for me to break down the layers. Last, I really like the simplicity of the pans with the colors you are using and how much you are teaching us to mix and alter the colors in our palette. I am keeping these notes in my journal so I know the color combinations / recipes that I am using. I am so thankful I have joined your Patreon!

I really enjoyed this, because what made me pick up my art supplies “after all those years” was the Nice Urban Sketching People on YouTube. (They are how I stumbled on Kristin.) So this streetscape is like a cross-over episode for me, lol. Enjoyed every minute of it. (Does NOT mean it is any more “perfect” than any of the others.)

This was a mess for me !! my area seem to small to paint all this, and my cars were so little .....

Jamie Wu

This was difficult, have to try again!
