See you soon - 1PM MST

For today’s live class we are doing an intro into this month’s technique: textures.

What you’ll need: watercolor paints, paper and brushes. In this class I’ll go over many ways to create textures that will include the following supplies: a hard card (like an old gift card), utility blade, salt, plastic wrap, white gouache, and masking fluid.

If you can’t make the live class, don’t worry! All live classes are recorded and available to watch back any time.

Can’t wait to paint with you! Let me know if you have any questions.

Hello from Tennessee

Yanzel

Hello from Puerto Rico.

Marie Hill

Hei from Norway. First time live 🤩 Yay!

Carmen

Hej from Denmark

Ann

The point of my brush has a lot more pigment than the rest of the brush, making the top more pigmented. How do I make it even?

Carmen

I did not know you had a sketchbook exercises done in January

Yanzel

The weight of the paper makes a bug difference in dry brush. My 90lb scrap paper is not good for this. 140lb makes it work

Harry Brownsell

Missed most of this because of bed time I'll rewatch later. Looking forward to the paintings with all these textures coming up 👍

Karen

Have you ever used waxed paper for texture?

Aleda Powell

Broccoli works well for tree textures as well.

Michelle Sis

The bubbles are made with a little bit of soap in a glass of water to make lots of bubbles that you then lay on the paper. Then drop paint on top of the bubbles

Laura

This was so much fun. I really learned a lot!

Michelle Sis

Several ways to apply the paint

Anne

I think you make a bubble solution and then put the bubbles on the paper, then tap the color onto the bubbles on the paper.

Michelle Sis

Can also put paint on Saran Wrap then lay that over the bubbles

Roseanne Therese

Such a great class ! Thank you Kristin ! I learned so much and it was so much fun. I absolutely love the new format with a theme for the month. 😊💕

Marian

Replay crew! I followed along the video using my sketchbook; the paper is NOT great for some of the techniques... water spatter, for example. One thing I did while the bubble experiment was going on was to use an old toothbrush and flick with my thumb. It makes a superfine spatter. Good reminder class on some techniques we did last year!

Denise C

Replay crew - Great class!

Jayne

Hi! I just joined and found you in YouTube and your tiny paintings! I love your tutorials! This is a general question: what number rigger brush is a good one wot start with? I am Trying to be careful with my purchases! Thanks!

Michelle Thomas

@kristin Can bleed proof white be used instead of white goache?

Susan Love

What a fun way to end! Love your giggles!

Anwar Molani

Excellent tutorial about textures. One Technique that I recently started using is the spray bottle to keep the paper wet during wet on wet. While doing it I realized that you can spray the paint directly from the bottle to create amazing patterns.

hi! Where did you purchase your scapel (xacto knife)? I love the look of it, and you don't have to replace the blades.

Sally Burrows

What a great class. Appreciate you showing all these techniques! I watched the video and then practiced. Lovely.

Melodee Skiles

Her husband is a blacksmith and made it!! I keep hoping he’ll make some for us to buy some day! ☺️

Melodee Skiles

Definitely, Michelle. That’s what I use. It worked great for the splattering into wet paint!

Michelle

Can’t wait to do the replay this weekend!

Laura Gray

Replay crew! Great class!! Another fun texture I've found is using the skin of sumo oranges, just paint the skin and use it like a stamp 🍊

Michelle

Finally completed this class…Has anyone figured out the bubbles?

Karie Kaminsky

My alcohol and thalo blue looked like moon jellies

Jeanette

Very late replay crew. I enjoyed the laughter at the end! Also, I only had an alcohol pad and squeezed a drop straight onto the wet paint. The gravity/spatter of the drop helped create a really cool circle within a circle within a circle. I painted my wash on top of a dried color texture (tree trunks) from the cut card earlier in the lesson. The wet color lifted, but the dried didn't. Very fun! Thanks Kristin! =D
