Nebula for #20! Take your time through each layer, building up light values to create the wispy, cloudy shape found in space nebulas. The most important part of this painting is keeping the light bright parts of the first layer so that the nebula feels like it's glowing. Keep those tiny circular strokes for the fluffy round shapes and utilize water to blend out some areas while keeping some lines hard. I can't wait to see how you do with this one! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Paper: arches 140 lb cotton 9X12" paper that I've cut into 3X3" pieces, giving me 12 pieces per page.

Paint: For this project I am using a split primary palette- cad yellow deep, lemon yellow, cad red, perm. rose, ultramarine blue, cerulean, indigo and sap green. The colors I'm using today are - lemon yellow, cerulean, perm. rose, ultramarine blue, and indigo.

Brushes: round 4 & 10 - Princeton brand.

Gasp!! 🤩

I can see not wanting to create brown in the nebula, but what’s wrong with green? Or was it just not part of your color palette for this painting?

Kristin Van Leuven

Oh yes, sorry I didn’t mention that very well. Green is great, it can get muddy with pink so I was avoiding it and trying to stay on the cooler side. Thanks for asking!

Jen

I’m excited about this one. I have been painting other things and I need to catch up. This is great motivation. Gorgeous!

Lindsay

This is very exciting.

Mia

So beautiful ✨. Do we wait for each layer to dry in this painting or are some of the layers wet on wet?

Lovely Leonie

Omg. This one is asking a lot of "trust the proces..." 😊 Can't wait to start!

Kendra

Kristen, I'm trying to put together a palette and I'm hoping you can share maybe 12-15 colors that you think would make up a very versatile palette? Do you have a current post or video that goes over this? Thank you. Love your paintings and how you patiently and slowly go over things. So helpful for a beginner!

Heather R Hare

Kendra I would Google Jane Blundell’s Ultimate Mixing Set. Daniel Smith paints are professional quality, so it’s pricey, but you could also just take a look to get a general idea of the kind of colors you’d want and then sub in any brand you like. Hope this helps! :)

Hello - I am new to this Patreon channel a couple weeks ago. I was trying to catch up on 2025 first, but decided to just jump in here so I'm in sync with everyone else. I love this painting. I'm noticing my indigo is not as vibrant as Kristin's. Mine is PB27 & PBk9. I think a more typical indigo is PB15 & PBk9. Maybe that is the problem. Does anyone have more knowledge than me about this?

Lindsay

Yes, wondering whether we have the same indigo as Kristin is sort of a team sport on here hahaha. We spend a lot of time testing brands to get “As Close to Krsitin” as we can lol. I think she just shakes her head. —That said, you do want an indigo you like. We use a lot of it. —What I did was I went to YouTube and watched one of those “I REVIEWED 17 INDIGOS!!!!” videos and tried one that I thought looked nice. —>FOR ME, I came to see what what matters is IF IT DRIES A LOT LIGHTER. I found I wanted one that dries nice and dark, since that is what we always use it for.

Lindsay

Sometimes Kristin says her Indigo is “like a Payne’s Grey” and once or twice I have seen her say, “in this painting, you should think of my indigo as more like a Payne’s Grey” (I forget what paintings). So I think indigo especially is one where you just have to look and match.

Kathryn

Lindsay, wow, thanks. I didn't realize I was hitting on something that's a hot topic. Haha. Do you mind sharing what you discovered from your search? I realize it can be a bit personal, but mine dried much lighter than I had hoped.

Jayne

This was hard but fun! Side question: how can we post our paintings here to share with each other? This boomer can’t figure it out! 🤪
