Light rays through clouds for 36! I have been painting light rays for days, trying to perfect this technique. I usually avoid them because it's hard to make them look realistic. BUT, I think I nailed it and in this tutorial I'm going to show you all the ways to make them look natural. The first part is wet into wet, but after that we take it slow, building up colors and clouds. Keep your cloud strokes scrubby to get that fluffy texture, leaving some edges white to look like a highlight. I can't wait to see how you do with this one! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Paper: arches 140 lb cotton 9X12" paper that I've cut into 3X3" pieces, giving me 12 pieces per page.

Paint: For this project I am using a split primary palette- cad yellow deep, lemon yellow, cad red, perm. rose, ultramarine blue, cerulean, indigo and sap green. The colors I'm using today are - cad yellow, perm. rose, ultramarine blue and indigo.

Brushes: round 4 & 10 Princeton

Thank you for confessing it took you 10 times to get this one the way you wanted it. I always imagine you get it right the first time. Now I dońt feel bad about painting that pear three times and still wasńt happy with it!

The sun rays did not work for me. In spite of layers of sky, the lightest touch of the brush (round) took all the color out of the sky. What am I doing wrong?

Sky’s are my favorite thing. I want to paint them. I don’t like a lot of my sky paintings. Going to keep practicing this one, I think it will help me improve my sky techniques. On number 4 now.

I painted my pear 3 times too! Also, not so happy but it was less displeasing of the bunch.

I could not make those sunrays work for me in any natural-looking way, so I painted over them, lifted out clouds, and then added a few stars. Made for a dramatically transitioning sky, especially since my sun was already clear of the horizon line, but I'm happier with it overall ... I think. :-)
