Cacti for #39! A few wet into wet parts, but mostly we are painting simple shapes and letting the lifting technique do the work to create these cute cacti. I have attached a few reference photos, so you can get an idea of what I was going for, but ideally you want to create blocks of highlight and shadow to create the ridges sections of each cactus. The final dark shadow will really help sell the illusion. I can't wait to see how you do with this one! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Paper: arches 140 lb cotton 9X12" paper that I've cut into 3X3" pieces, giving me 12 pieces per page.

Paint: For this project I am using a split primary palette- cad yellow deep, lemon yellow, cad red, perm. rose, ultramarine blue, cerulean, indigo and sap green. The colors I'm using today are - cad yellow, perm rose, sap green, and ultramarine blue.

Brushes: round 4, 3/4" flat - Princeton

Fun. Looking forward to seeing everyone’s cacti

Erin T

What would be a good technique to add the needles? (Or whatever they’re called lol)

Kelly Amato

This was fun! I can never achieve the beautiful level Kristin creates, but it’s so satisfying to keep trying. Doing the 2025 Collection concurrently because the teaching is so great!

Kristin—What a beautiful job you did on this tiny painting! Beautiful interpretation of the photo…I am blown away. Let’s see if I can even come close! Thank you.

Terry Holtgraves

Hi Kristen, you have probably told us before, but can you tell me exactly what kind of brush you use. My watercolour brushes all seem to come to a very distinct point. Your brush truly looks like a round brush and I’m wondering if I get a different one, if I may have more luck with the different techniques. Thank you so much!

Susan C Terris

I love learning, though my cacti look more like pickles! Question: do you need a higher level of membership to post photos?

Bear Raeb Barrett

No all can post pics. The square with the mountains in it to the left of the comment box… if you press it you can add your photo

Susan C Terris

Erin I asked about these at the Garden store days ago. Technically they aren't even cactus, so they don't have any needles fyi. The class they are in is Euphorbias (like succulents).

Leslie Young

She uses Princeton Velvetouch round brushes, sizes 4 and 10, I'm almost positive.

Susan C Terris

Thank you. I wonder why I don't see a square with mountains in it to the left of the comment box. I'll check my settings to see if I might have accidentally not chosen that. I appreciate you!

Leslie Young

When I first opened this, I thought we were painting green churros. 😂😂😍😍

Luella

Also Kristin, has told us that she uses a brush until that sharp tip point is worn down and then she keeps using it because she likes it and she’s used to it. So I guess you just have to wear your brushes down more. 😛

Luella

Susan, did you get this figured out? When you are in Kristen Van Leuven’s Chat, you’ll see post a message. To the left of it there should be a white and blue square that looks like it has white mountains in it. If you touch that that should allow you to access your photos to post an image.
