Sand dollars for #44! In our first negative painting for the month, I wanted to focus on the classic layering technique. This time with sand dollars! We keeping the palette limited and going slow, building up each layer carefully. Once you have your layered shapes, now we can have fun with texture, shadow and details on the shells. I can't wait to see how you do with this one! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Paper: arches 140 lb cotton 9X12" paper that I've cut into 3X3" pieces, giving me 12 pieces per page.

Paint: For this project I am using a split primary palette- cad yellow deep, lemon yellow, cad red, perm. rose, ultramarine blue, cerulean, indigo and sap green. The colors I'm using today are - cad yellow, cad red, and ultramarine blue.

Brushes: round 4 & 10 - Princeton

I've never heard of them either! Then again, I don't think they're native to the UK...

My brother-in-law is from Oregon and his extended family meets at Cannon Beach every year. My sister has collected so many sand dollars on those trips and did an amazing installation of them on her living room wall. I’d love to give her a card with this painting on it!
