Whoever wanted to play Lightning McQueen, fuck that guy. I hate when a player just copies an existing IP character like a guy playing as Sam from. LOTR... Unoriginal. Boring. But then to go as far as playing as a vehicle is fucking nuts and not fun. Its like saying I want to play t-shirt.

I had a player who really wanted to be the main character from The Last Airbender, the little bald guy, in my campaign. I told her I had never seen the TLA and the setting and story would have nothing to do with the show. She was fine with that and played as a elemental monk with the rules as written from the Players Handbook. She was very respectful about it and it never took away from the campaign. I just once in a while had to remember that a licensed Nickelodeon character was running around with the party for no reason.

So the time loop made me think of a way to do it. The players are in a loop, and every time it resets is when they level up. So some events remain the same, but they begin to change and branch out as the players become stronger.

Speaking of Time travel: imo, if you are going to introduce time travel in your campaign have specific mechanics built around it. Flushed out. It gets confusing so fast. I had a DM have player characters go into a "different" timeline or realm and rejoin the campaign as an older character. It happened to 4 different players at different times. Sometimes it was writing off players missing chunks of session. They would also level up above the rest of the group because they spent 1-2 years in the other realm...

It’s actually a sick format because if you come up with interesting domino effect of events and interactions they can change them after they find out. (OUTER WILDS SPOILERS) I followed outer wilds format of having a catastrophic event at the end, having something that contains a piece of their soul, and a reason why time returns their souls to that place when they die. It’s a pretty buttoned up method tbh!

As someone who just finished running a very well received time loop arc in my home game, it was very frustrating to listen to Murph clearly not understand what a “time loop” was. My players didn’t do much on the final loop that will affect the future, but they could’ve.

An update with context from the case of the missing corpse (ka-chow): the room in question was a normal room if you discount the presence of a murdering sentient sword. Our greed overcame us so immediately that we asked to reclaim the cloak about 2 seconds after we hid the body, so ostensibly we were still standing directly above the still-warm, invisible remains. This was an infiltration of a party at a castle rather than a dungeon, so trap doors were unlikely. However, we thought the image of us all putting the body down and then immediately fruitlessly patting around the floor for it was so funny, that we accepted our lost cloak and our razzing as the just solution to our immoral actions in the world thus far.

I don't know about you Murph but I am capable of casually putting down completely visible objects I have no intention of hiding and then not being able to find them thirty seconds later. Recently I mislaid a pillow, a large, very visible pillow, in my small bedroom which is also my living space, and didn't find it for several weeks. I wouldn't even need a nat 1 is what I'm saying.

I empathise with Lightning McQueen submitter- I had a player once request to play a broom. He didn’t want to be able to move or speak. He just wanted to be an inanimate broom. I did a really sick homebrew build for him using kobold press (can’t remember the details was ages ago) and gave him some awesome spells like infestation etc and psychic abilities and encouraged the other players to pick him up and carry him around and ensured he had lots of opportunity to interact and be present in combat and he STILL had a bad time. Sometimes people are committed to ruining their own fun ya know!

so good to hear the ungenerous read of the wild magic sorcerer as someone who played in a game with someone who had a player with that main character mindset, he would talk over people and have extended monologues and sometimes the only way to interact with the story who be through him (he would not give anyone a beat to talk, would just ask a question and then make an often wrong assumption about their character). and this dude wasn't even DM favored. he would get in her way too [definitely not cool of the other players to just stop talking to them tho, especially at work; sounds like everybody needs to have a conversation and/or y'all just need to take a break from playing all together]

My current game is stuck in a timeloop that we’re trying to escape! Our DM cleverly inserted a mechanic where if we become too aware of the timeloop reality will begin to break down, thus preventing us from asking too many questions. A perfect solution to prevent players from finding plot holes imo

About the players who are frustrated with the one favored sorcerer, the best I can think of is taking the party to one of the non-mc’s hometowns. That way, someone is sort of forced to take the lead. Or try and look at what stats the others are better at compared to the sorcerer, and place puzzles and other challenges that play to those strengths.

We had a character who's go-to move in an unexplored dungeon was to throw a body through doorways. More often then not it triggered a trap that affected him (poison arrows, a battering ram, loose rocks, etc.) but it's iconic now.

You along side other commenters have convinced me that New Haven has some really baller pizza parlors but am not sure if I’m sold on the better high argument bc NYC has A LOT of pizza places, a sizable number of which are good enough to be raved about by both tourists online as well as natives/locals irl making the likelihood that anyone who hasn’t lived in NYC or at least regularly commuted there for a decent chunk of time would have definitively tasted the city’s absolute BEST pizza or even the say, top five slices in the city, seems rather low. Unless ofc, an active & consolidated effort to find & try as many of the city’s most locally appreciated parlors as possible was made over the course of many days either across multiple visits or over the course or some number of shorter visits or one extended stay. But then again, any one of the above exceptions or one which did not occur to me could very well apply to you & thus it’s totally possible that you do in fact have good reason to believe that you have tried all (or at least the vast majority of) NYCs best za. I don’t know what I don’t know, ya know?

For Lightening McQueen case, feel like when someone insists on doing something like that you give them scenarios on why it won't work beforehand. How are you going to climb a ladder, how would you fit in doorways, etc.
