I am so excited for tomorrow night. I have tickets to see one of my all-time favorite movies, Transformers: The Movie, which is showing for the 40th Anniversary. I first saw this movie when I was 7 years old, and if you don't know the history, it was quite an experience. Over it's first two years, Transformers was one of the most popular shows and toylines in the US. So the Hasbro executives had the bright idea to kill all the main characters in the movie so they could release an all new set of toys for the third season. The movie is brutal. Kids left the theaters crying. Angry parents were complaining and there were widespread letter-writing campaigns. I think it even led to Hasbro changing the subsequent GI Joe movie and maybe not even releasing it in theaters.

Years later, the merciless violence gives the movie a gravitas, and it probably would be more forgettable today if it had just been a generic kids cartoon. At the time, it was some of the best animation I had ever seen. I was blown away when I was 7, and it still holds up super well today. It's full of amazing one liners by some of the best voice actors in the history of cartoons. The soundtrack is this uniquely 80s mix of synthesizers and hair metal ballads, which gives it a retro feel while somehow not feeling dated. Can you tell I love this movie?

Of course I converted my son to be a Transformers fan at a very young age, so he'll be joining too. When he was younger, we even went to a Transformers convention and met some of the voice actors and singers from this movie, so he's stoked as well. Should be a great time!

You've inspired me to give the series another go. I am nostalgic, as I grew up watching this on TV, but it was always random episodes and mostly characters from before the movie. I tried watching all 96 episodes a couple of times, but once I got out of season 1, I found the 'monster of the week ' episodes without any main story plot a slog and ended up stopping. I tried watching the movie, but without the context of the plot episodes from season 2, I didn't know who half the cast was and just felt confused. This time will be different! (Hopefully) I have found a list of 55 actually plot-relevant episodes (new characters, etc...), and I plan to watch those with the movie in the appropriate place :) . Will see how I get on. If you are curious what those 55 episodes are, it's the episodes in bold from this post. https://www.tfw2005.com/boards/threads/a-list-of-g1-continuous-story-episodes.1161031/

Thanks for sharing!

This is very interesting, thanks! This really focuses down on the most epic episodes. Looking at the list, reminds me of a fun fact. Did you know "Call of the Primitives" was done by a different animation studio with better quality? I'll have to go rewatch that one in particular.

Rose

I did not. I'll have to keep an eye out when I get up to it. Thinking further on it, the Transformers series that I got into the most growing up was Beast Wars. I go back and watch that sometimes too, though you get in too deep and they start throwing complex time travel at you XD. Was the 40th rewatch screening as enjoyable as you hoped?

Rose

On the comic itself, I'm trying (and failing) to come up with something more boring and dry as a bedtime story.

Beast Wars was a top tier series, so it makes sense that you got into that. Beast Wars actually makes it harder to go back to the older shows because you have high expectations for the writing. The movies was great. I loved seeing it on the big screen. They also had a special thing on Peter Cullen before the movie, which had me feeling lots of things. I was a little disappointed about the sound. It felt like the sound was all coming from the front rather than all around you. Maybe they didn't mix this for a modern sound system? But overall, felt very lucky to have this opportunity.

Ha, I actually thought of layers pretty soon after thinking of this comic.

I was kind of hoping that by watching the more plot episodes I would get introduced bit by bit to the new characters, but none of that happens. Introductions happen by way of "Someone mentioned them by name, and they showed up as if they were always there"

Cardboard Crack

Yeah, I see what you mean. Especially for season 2, there is a whole new cast that's added and never really explained. Some of the funner episodes are the ones where you see how the new Transformers were made (for example, the dinobots or the combaticons).

Rose

Well, I've gotten to the end of Season 2. The second half of that season felt like it had much better writing than the first half. Closer in quality to season 1. And I hear that season 3 is better on the plot than either 1 or 2. Soundwave was always my favourite Decepticon, but I have to say Shockwave is growing on me. Incidentally, they are the 2 Decepticons that seem to disobey the laws of mass and relativity the most. Soundwave with his transformation, but they can never seem to decide just how big Shockwave is. Ah well, time to have all of my favourite characters killed and replaced with new ones I have no attachment to XD.

This is fun to hear your feedback as you go through the seasons. That's interesting whaat you say about season 3. I remember it being a lot more individual sci-fi stories and less about the epic battle between good and evil. It disappointed me when I was younger, but maybe I'd appreciate it more now. Have you ever watched Transformers Prime? The writing isn't as strong as Beast Wars, but has some great action sequences and it's fun to have the humans back. I enjoyed it quite a bit when it was regularly updating (although part of that might have been sharing watching it with my son).

Rose

I'm glad to hear it. I'll keep posting feedback as I go. I don't actually know about season 3 as this will be my first time watching it. It was just something I read, I could be very much mistaken. The movie is brutal, and I'm nearly 40, and I was expecting it. I feel for the 7-year-olds watching it in theatres. I have not seen Transformers Prime, though I will see where I'm at once I finish Gen 1. I think my next point is some of the Transformers, Robots in Disguise. I have nostalgia for Rail Racer, so I want to at least dig up those episodes to watch. After spending too much time at metal concerts when I was young, my hearing is not what it was. Most of what I watch these days is subtitled, but this is not and with gen 3, there are a lot more characters with weird voices I am having difficulty understanding. Insectacons, Wheelie, and any of the Sharktacons I have no chance whatsoever, and then the Transformers that are just a little off, but whose lips are hidden behind a faceplate I still struggle a bit with. Thankfully, the plot isn't super complicated, so I'm able to fill in the gaps pretty easily. Blur would have been a character I loved as a kid, now though he's just annoying XD. I'm one episode into season 3, will update again once I'm further in.

I have mixed feelings about humans, especially in shows where humans are not the selling point. I often find that when humans in these movies/series etc... get upgraded to main character status, it ruins my experience. The Bayverse Movies are a good example of this. I don't care about your teenage drama bullshit, I came to watch Autobots and Decepticons and the interactions between them. I also don't care about the earth defence force and their feelings about the transformers. I want to see more of the transformers, please. Some of the Alien vs Predator movies are bad for this too. We have a movie about these 2 very cool alien creatures doing battle, but instead I have a movie about humans. No thanks, I don't like it. I'm sure there are many other examples, but those are 2 that jump to mind right now.

Which Robots in Disguise are you referring to? Haven’t there been multiple of them. Prime is interesting because (1) they bring back the original voice actors for Optimus and Megatron and (2) it was made by many of the same people involved in the movies but without Michael Bay. It has some shortcomings, but it really feels like it was made by people with a nostalgic love of the Beast Wars and original series.

Season 3 is very different from season 2, almost like it's a different series altogether. I'm about halfway through, episode order is super wonky so that won't mean much. I've seen the 5 Faces of Darkness Episodes, Dark Awakening, and the 3 Starscream episodes (Thief in the Night, Starscream's Ghost and Ghost in the machine) Dark Awakening must have been a massive kick in the teeth after the movie. Bring back Prime as a Zombie and then kill him again? Starscream is as stupid as ever, reviving Unicron, the Eater of Planets sounds like a great idea, yes XD. Megatron I think has even more of an anger problem than before, though he does make for a strong decipticon leader. I miss the characters from premovie, even the ones still alive like Soundwave. He just doesn't play the part he used to, and when he does show up he feels dumber than he used to as well. I had a look into the 1984 marvel comic of transformers because it felt to me like season 1 and 2 were taking parts from some other source material and just jamming them in. If the shows were the first media to introduce the new characters in season 2 I felt they would have done a better job with it. Sure enough the comics are doing actual introductions and as a result it feels like the cartoon is chopping up the comics in a way that assumes you've read the comics before watching the series =/

Okay, thanks for the update. There are so many weird decisions in Season 3. It would have been so interesting to be a fly on the way when those stories were being put together. Were people just green-lighting every crazy idea because they have no respect for the audience? Did they think they were dong something new and edgy because it was so different? It's interesting that you mention the comics. I was actually a big fan of how they fleshed out some of the characters, and collected them even into their later issues. Funny enough, some of the last issues are worth quite a bit (look up Transformers #80 on eBay) because people have subsequently realized it was pretty good, but so few were printed at the time because it wasn't very popular anymore (it was during the lull between the original series and Beast Wars).
