That message from Yasumi Matsuno hits hard, and Griffin's right: it's SO effective to play a game that resonates with the current situation. A few years ago, during COVID, I finally got around to playing through Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. From its inception, that series has made some eerily accurate assumptions about where the world was headed, particularly when it comes to classism and A.I. But what made Mankind Divided stand out to me was its depiction of a police state, and what it's like to live under a fascist, racist oligarchy. The analogies it used when it came to race were, as many noted at the time, not exactly the BEST choice, but what the game accomplished with its setting and interactions with law enforcement were chilling. Characters having to break the law simply to leave their current location, being stopped at checkpoints repeatedly to verify your legal status, seeing the effects of martial law on a city... It was an imperfect depiction, but the game immersed you in that reality incredibly effectively. With the direction things have continued to progress in the U.S. as of late, I'm starting to think another playthrough may be even more valuable.
