YES! We’ve been waiting on you ❤️

mary-anne

OMG YAYYYY SO EXCITED!!! Been waiting all day for your reaction 🥰

SongsFromASuitcase

I want David to AI Dolly Parton singing the lead on Tyrant with Beyonce sooo bad!

Taryne Warren

Ya Ya is THE BEST! I literally thought of you when Bey did that Elvis voice at the 3:29 mark, and rushed here for your reaction! She's unlocked another voice! So many characters in her voice I can just imagine how much fun those studio sessions were. Sooooo I feel like Cowboy Carter didn't pick up until track #8, because everything after that was EXCELLENT!! This album is reminding me of her earlier albums where she's singing more than rapping (a la Lemonade & Renaissance). LOVE Desert Eagle, Ya Ya, Tyrant, II Most Wanted (I love Miley and her together), Alligator Tears and Spaghetti. Flamenco gives some GREAT vocal dexterity. Bodyguard gives me Sheryl Crow vibes. Cowboy Carter just had a slow start. Not feeling American Requiem at all. It's the only one I don't like, and I don't think it will grow on me. Overall a SOLID album, Again! Similar production style to Renaissance but quieter, and not as full. Renaissance edges out Cowboy Carter to me at this moment, but these things evolve. I feel like the think pieces to come will give us more insight and fill in some of the gaps.

Taryne Warren

Also the lyrics in this are TOP NOTCH! "You say move a mountain and I'll throw on my boots..... You say change religion now I spend Sundays with you.... somethin about those tears of yours... how does it feel to be adored " - Alliigator Tears

Lauren Pope

Fuck yeah!!!! Audrey is on it!!!!

Taryne Warren

"Beyonce" is her Mother's maiden name. The actual spelling of the name is "Beyince" which was passed down from her Grandfather however because of racism, the error on her mother's birth certificate wasn't important enough for the state of Louisiana to change. "BEYINCE" is her reclaiming the name of her forefathers. Google the story. I hope I captured it accurately here. Completely believable. My grandfather was a Jamaica immigrant here and his last name was "Whyte" and spelled incorrectly so his papers said "White". His kids in the U.S. have the wrong spelling to their last name as a result of administrative errors in the 70s. Many of those people were black people. It is not a coincidence. Racism and its after effects of past racism are all over us.

Taryne Warren

"Gary" as in Gary, Indiana - Michael Jacksons birthplace and a very black city/town (80%) Paul McCartney on "Blackbird", written 1968: "Of penning the track back in 1968, Paul McCartney said in Barry Miles’ 1997 book Many Years From Now: “I had in mind a Black woman, rather than a bird. Those were the days of the civil rights movement, which all of us cared passionately about, so this was really a song from me to a Black woman, experiencing these problems in the States: ‘Let me encourage you to keep trying, to keep your faith, there is hope.'”

Alana

Audrey the beginning of DAUGHTER also reminds me of a song!!! I’m hearing ohhh oh ohhhhh oh on top of the guitar but I can’t think of the name!!!!

JLeo

3 HOURSSSS!!!!! I AM F*CKING READY!!!!!!!!!!

Jayda Riley

When her mother asked to correct the spelling they told her that she should be lucky she has a birth certificate since black women didn’t used to get them for their children

Jayda Riley

Cowboy Carter was supposed to be Act 1 however so it blends into Renaissance (amen into I’m that girl) She switched them bc she thought people needed to dance and feel joy after the pandemic

Céline L.

I have a feeling the song Audrey was reminded of while listening to Daughter is Home by Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros... Is it just me?

Jayda Riley

Beyonce stated that this is not a country album it’s a “beyonce album” it’s a celebration of her roots and the people before her. She is reclaiming the word cowboy as slaves in Texas were the majority of cowboys. They were the most skilled with the hardest jobs and were called boy to belittle them. She wanted to remove the negative connotation so all that remained was their strength and resilience

Khalif Moore

I’m halfway through and you’re spot on about the album being sporadic. You have to imagine you’re sitting as a jukebox and Dolly, Willie and Linda Martell were MC’s for different stations. She explored all sounds, just turn the dial 😊

MykeYonce

that was Beyoncé doing the low harmony at the end of Alligator Tears…mama’s got range! lol

Alana

OMG YESSSSSSS!!! I couldn’t think of it but this is what it sounds like to me at least! I was going crazy not knowing so thank you!!!!!

Alana

Okay it’s the song Home, another commenter said it above! 🙏🏾

Dana (Dah-Nah)

your mention of Bey and Miley not matching makes me want a reaction to Tummy Hurts by Renee Rapp and Coco Jones

Tiara Edwards

The other singers in blackbird are young up and coming black women in country right now that have had a hard time feeling comfortable in the genre. I’ve listened to tanner adell and Reyna Roberts who are on this with two other young ladies and they make great individual music. They spoke about how having beyonce in the genre and how she fiercely claims it has made it more comfortable even though her alone can’t erase racism obviously but her presence alone shows that there are young black artists in country

Matt

One thing you have to do when going back into this is to constantly think about one of the themes. She's trying to show that Country can be so much more than it is and it doesn't have to be in this narrow box. If we stay in these boxes, nothing can grow. Traditionally, Country is mainly about instrumentation, lyrical content, and storytelling. And each of her songs brings in a country element by using at least one of these things. Like you can have a song with a House beat, rap, or even operatic singing with some country element and it still can be under some umbrella of country. Like other genres are not that uptight about it, and we all need to relax if we want to create art. So like while it seems like it's all over the place on first listen, it really isn't. Oh and it's all on the same radio station, KNTRY Radio, to drive home the idea that even though these songs are different sonically, they could all be classified under the same genre (At least on her KNTRY Texas Radio! Haha) At least, that's my take! I could be wrong, but it makes sense to me!

Tiara Edwards

I definitely see what you mean Audrey about the “not good enough” i wonder if beyonce is like Steph curry(the greatest basketball shooter ever) in the way she thinks. Because he says to be the best you need to have a healthy does of insecurity to keep driving you and pushing you to grow and be even better🤷🏽‍♀️ who knows but it’s interesting

Callie

I can’t watch it all tonight, but I’m not going to be able to sleep until I hear your reaction to “Daughter!”

fry

YA YA IS THE BEST SONG

RE M

Her songs are not always autobiographical btw. I mean in daddy lessons she's sings "right before he (her daddy) dies..." but her dad is not in fact dead! Daughter is about fantasizing about killing ppl and to stop those demons she runs to church and prays for strength to not act on her thoughts. Ppl say she nothing like her father ( assuming he's bad) but she's saying she can be like him if someone fucks her over. Think about it in the context of Jolene. I also think having the intros/interludes as if it's a radio station you can imagine listening to something for a little while then changing the station to something else. use urban dictionary.com to look up phrases too.

Malik

I literally watched all 3 hours with you🥵 🫠 Amen -love American requiem- looved Daughter Bodyguard Rose Ya ya 2 hands 2 heaven Sweet honey buck in My favorites but I also love and respect your opinion on the album

Jasmine Levy

The harmonies on Tyrant are Tiera Kennedy. She's also one of the four(!) featured singers on Blackbird.

Kyianna Walker

I just finished all 3 hours and I am living for your reaction and I love the album so much. The theory going around on social media is that Amen leads into the first song on Renaissance because it sounds as though we are in a spaceship traveling to a new world, which makes so much sense as far as the ending lyrics in Amen, Them old ideas (Yeah) are buried here (Yeah) Amen (Amen)" and then we go into "Im That Girl" in Renaissance, which is so out of this world!

Antoinette

The song Spaghetti is a nod to Italian Western films that were known as “Spaghetti Westerns” for being low budget but also more violent and gritty compared to American western films. A lot of the films were low budget as mentioned but they gained popularity for the storytelling and visuals. So having it be a rap which can also be considered all of those things by different people “low budget, violent, gritty” on a “country” album is well placed. Very random but once you know the history it makes more sense Also, a lot of conservatives in US think Beyoncé is secretly a white Italian woman named Ann Marie Latrassi and that she’s cosplaying as black so idk if that has any relevance to the song but it certainly makes me giggle that she leaned into that

Antoinette

Also Daughter fits perfectly after Jolene, IMO. Jolene being about warning a woman to stay away from her man. How much she loves her man. How she’s really with it and Jolene will “catch the heat” which is kind of a dual if you could say but then you get into Daughter where it’s scary and dark and even in the lyrics Bey committed a murder which is my interpretation of her actually killing Jolene. Like she’s just like her father and she plays dirty when she needs to. Idk

fry

relistening with you american requiem is one of my favorites now it’s just a beautiful song. you should totally give daughter another listen it’s so hauntingly beautiful it would serve in a mafia scene of some tv show or movie

Callie

To answer your “Daughter” questions, the Italian is the arietta “Caro Mio Ben,” originally published c. 1782, by Tommaso Giordani, but changed to a minor key. The translation is “My dearest love, believe me at least, that without you, my heart languishes. Your faithful one sighs constantly. Cease, cruel one, this torture.” She loves her beloved so much that she feels ill without him, and begs him to stop putting her through such torment. The change from major to minor makes it sound less romantic and lovesick and more desperate and—in the context of “Daughter”—deranged. The intensity of her love is bringing on these fantasies of violence that she doesn’t want, or knows she shouldn’t have. I don’t know enough Beyoncé lore to get into the title itself beyond what’s there in the lyrics, that people think she’s not like her father, but in some ways, in the right circumstances, she’s more like him than people would expect, and that seems to be a source of conflict within her (perhaps like the conflict between the gentle, graceful sound of the arietta and the contents of the lyrics? or of a classical, ‘high-brow’ music next to country?). Pedantic side note: articles are calling “Caro Mio Ben” an opera song, and I feel it’s only fair, since certain people are being pedantic about genres and trying to gatekeep country, that I point out “Caro Mio Ben” is not part of any opera. :) Okay, now I’m going to sleep! 😂 and I’ll look forward to finishing the rest of the video tomorrow!

Matt

Wait. What? I must not be deep enough into the conspiracy world to have heard that one. I am DYING. People are insane 😭😂

Annie Willow

My thoughts were the exact same at the end “I just went through EVERYTHING”

Jayda Riley

It seemed you may not have know the city Galveston, it is a city in the Houston metro area (on the coast). Noteworthy as the birthplace of the holiday Juneteenth. It was the last or one of the last places in which slaves found out they were free, 2 and a half years later due to Texas not enforcing the proclamation. Also AOTY is album of the year at the Grammys a nod to her never winning even though she has the most Grammys

_.Ny

beyonce can sing in any voice she wants so most the time you aint think it was her it was lol shes been singing her own backup vocals for years as well

_.Ny

side note... Beyonce worked on this project before renaissance during covid but since the world was so locked in and depressed basically because of covid she worked on renaissance so people could dance and feel free.

Renee W.

Beyoncé did say on insta this is not a country album but a “Beyonce” album. She said this album was born out of an experience where she did not feel welcomed in the country music scene. So while this album has country elements, I heard rock, pop, gospel and alot of unique sounds. I understood the concept immediately after my first listen. This album is a melting pot just like America as a country is!!! And the artwork and western/cowboy themes are a nod to that. So not a country (genre) album , but an album that represents her musical view on this Country (USA) hence the Americana vibes……or I could just be delusional. But I get that this album is not for everyone. Thanks for sharing your experience with us Audrey! *Sidenote* I love the Juxtaposition of her voice with Miley and its imperfections. I think that’s why it works. Listening to it gave “Thelma & Louis” vibes. Like how those 2 women were so different but it worked.

PJ

This!

Antoinette

Oh friend wait until you hear the conspiracy about how she got the singer Aaliyah killed. I try to stay out of that world because it pisses me off lol

Carmen Hendricks

I agree. It reminded me of old tragic Westerns movies.

Tesia Turner

My best advice going forward with Beyoncé albums is any expectations you may have? Lose them.😭😭 Always expect the unexpected when it comes to that creole lady.

Michelle Peeples

According to my niece, an uber Beyonce fan. Country Carter was written before Renaissance, but Bee put out Renaissance first because it was more upbeat. So, Country Carter would have been written during the Jay Z cheating scandal. This would explain some of the darker tones like in Just for Fun. She was says "But time heals everything I don't need anything." If you think about this song in that context of Jay Z cheating, it is deep.

_.Ny

Girl stay off the internet cse beyonce is not no white woman😭😭🤣 you just believe anything and know nothing

Antoinette

Now friend, I want you to read what I wrote again and ask yourself if I believe that. Comprehension is the key here !

Ashley G

im still towards the beginning but the singer in blackbird is Tanner Adell

Malik

The way you consumed it, you missed out on the transitions from song to song. Also, there’s a vocal coach on YouTube who had the accurate translation to the Italian portion of Daughter. And breaks it down for why it makes sense in the context of the song. Jaron M Legrair

Chanise

Thank you for 3 hours worth of content. I truly enjoyed myself!!! 1. I think you should listen to the whole album again, I learned that the first listen, because it’s so different it can be overwhelming. Especially the songs you aren’t so crazy about. 2. I think when she refers to legacy and not wanting to be forgotten, especially in reference to act i & ii You have to remember that she has done the research on the history and is bringing in a lot of elements from black musicians that have been forgotten about or doesn’t get the credit. So while bringing light to them, also stamping that she wants her legacy solidified.

Ana

As an album girlie, I feel challenged by this project as a whole, so i divided it into two parts -- first part stops after Just for fun, for me it makes sense. 27 songs, although, with a couple of intros is so long -- not to be a hypocrite, I can't listen to RedTV in one sit too. With that being said, I looooved the album, she and Taylor both have this creative freedom that is a luxury for most artists. Postie's feature was such a nice surprise. Next time I hear him, it will be on Tortured poets. Can't wait. I hope that she comes to AU with this album, we need it.

Noni

It's not Taylor, pretty sure it's the girls featured on Blackbird, via their twitters

Jon Mendoza

Yeah you definitely need to stop using YouTube and use Spotify or Apple Music instead for your reactions , nonetheless LOVED THE VIDEO 🫶🏽

Jon Mendoza

from Linda Martell Show to the end of the album, all the songs run smoothly into each other , it hurt every time you had to start the next video 😭

Noni

Also with Daughter, it's like a western movie scene. A Spaghetti western specifically which was normally directed by Italians so Americans placed them in their own category so it'd be separate and lesser. Cue the Italian in Daughter before leading into spaghetti. I also adore Daughter bc I love storytelling. Beyonce said she watched a bunch of westerns during the making for this albums so I guess we can think of the songs as soundtracks

Damian Goins

Soooooo from Texas Hold 'Em through to Spaghettii its a full story 'western' style. She meets a man who is hesitant to love her and she's warming him up and telling him to "bring it to the dance floor" with his emotions. They get together and she describers their love in Bodyguard where the other women Jolene gets introduced and she warns her to stay away or shell catch the smoke. In Daughter she fantasies about killing her, but is asking god to cleanse her of those thoughts, but continues on saying... Don't fuck with me, I'm just like my father (My daddy said shoot). The Italian Aria is a longing for a distant love. Then we go into Spaghettii which is like an outlaw song, but also is a play on the phrase 'spaghetti western' which referenced the Italian film makers (Italian aria) that made western movies. Americans made fun of them because they were foreigners making classic Americana content. It also harkens back to the them in the beginning of the album of the world thinking she's foreign to the country genre.... Shewwwwww I hope that made sense and helped.

Damian Goins

I have to say, I respect your opinion, but I couldn't disagree more about Miley and Beyonces blending. They sounds so fucking good together. It's perfection to my ear. I'm sorry. I'm so shocked you felt that way, because it is in fact a huge hit.

Damian Goins

Also listening to it broken like this isn't helping the story lol. I know this is a reaction, but the transitions between everything make it amazing. I hate that you missed all of that goodness.

Damian Goins

I love you! I hope you have a second deeper listen. Great reaction and thank you for the content.

OnnaDay

I follow a few classically trained singers. And they have all said that Caro Mio Ben (the Italian Beyoncé was singing during Daughter) is a famous opera that is like a rite of passage for all classically trained singers to sing

OnnaDay

It's actually three different artists singing that one line. I think Tanner is the second one.

OnnaDay

"Beyince" is her family name, her mother's maiden name. Her parents decided to spell it like "Beyonce" so that people will pronounce it correctly.

SongsFromASuitcase

Yea I'm not classically trained in the regualr fashion. I studied classical singing as in the placement and technique but not the songs and this also came at a later date. I mainly sang musical theater or pop ballad styles early on.

Taryne Warren

This was PERFECT! Sums it all up!

Candice King

If you didn't love 16 Carriages as a single, then I am not surprised that you aren't connecting with the album. I LOVE and replay American Requiem constantly! Ya Ya through the end is EVERYTHING! The only tracks that I am skipping (if at all) are the interludes, Blackbird, and Flamenco.

Candice King

I think Miley and Bey blend very well. I don't care for Miley's voice by itself next to Bey's. Miley's is too raspy and abrasive next to Bey. But together I think they sound great.

alishay carp

Me too 😭😭 I literally paused it and turned on one direction!!

Candice King

It'd deeper than that. Her mother's name was spelled incorrectly on her Birth certificate and the nurse told her mom she should be glad to even have one because black people didn't alwasy get one back then. So Beyonce is reclaiming her mother's birthright by spelling it Beyince.

carla magee

Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy and Reyna Roberts are on blackbird with Beyonce. 4 black young country artist

Taryne Warren

On "Ya Ya" when she says "I just hope that he don't crash, keep the pistol on the dash"... I interpreted that as her saying she hopes he keeps the pistol on the dash and doesn't take himself out with it.

missninacarter

My Rose was actually the lullaby Rumi had asked her to sing!

carla magee

Ppl won’t get this album unless they understand what she’s trying to say. You need to listen to it again and dissect it if you’re confused. Also cowboy Carter was suppose the be 1st then renaissance

missninacarter

its not the same talking about legacy, and being remembered for a white woman to a black woman... in here i dont see her saying she'll leave a legacy as a need to be remembered just to be remembered, but leave a legacy for her children and other people of color. she's been doing all this work for a reason, and its not simply to entertain us, but to rescue the history of black music, and she's not doing it in a "in your face" kinda way like you expected maybe, but in a more refined way. and this is part of the legacy she wants to leave, where people can think about music or genre without thinking about skin color at all. (and even deeper than that, but you know) also, i'm kinda glad you were confused, bc Beyoncé is not a predictable artist and she has the intent to confuse people, so we need to educate ourselves to be able to get her art. and again, this is also part of the legacy she's leaving... i mean, you (and many of us) didn't even know who Linda Martell is, and Beyoncé is here making us notice her - and so many others. but she doesn't say who she is, she doesn't need to draw us pictures, she wants us to do the work with her to get it... and there is soooo much to learn and to understand, it's almost a full time job lol

missninacarter

the sample in Spaghettii is a Brazilian song, from a genre named FUNK... is a genre that was wildly rejected for coming from the favelas ("slums") and the black community. she starts off that song with that sample while questioning the concept of genres, and knowing this reference I thought it was brilliant and so out of the box

Shaniya

I love that you brought up the "rules" of music and song and how you wanted the music of this album to have that structure or those "rules". This album was made to defy those ideas because music truly has no rules. Over the past few years we've watched as black artist have been pushed into the hip-hop, r&b, and rap categories and not allowed to branch out into the other categories. Even when they do they are bombarded with hate and negative and told they can't make any other type of music. This album was about artist having the right to make whatever music they want no matter the genre. The theme of this album is country music but Beyonce is not a country singer, she's not R&B, she's not hip-hop, nor is she pop. She is Beyonce. This is not a country album. This is a Beyonce album.

tayjay

understanding all of the layers put into each song on a beyoncé album is a whole process. you should listen again now that it has been dissected in the chat. i’ve listened to it so much now it feels short.

Matt

I’ve heard the Aaliyah one. That’s all wild. Like we can never know for sure who Beyoncé really is since we won’t know her personally, but she has always come off as so genuine and kind. It’s wild that people hate her so much to start this crazy stuff.

Erwin 𐚁

Finally got a chance to watch your reaction as I was still digesting the album myself before reading reviews and watching breakdowns. So many comments already so I’ll just say that I hope the album grows on you. I think it’s really special.

justin/zuo

hey audrey! i don't know how other people feel but i think it'd be really cool if you were able to react to the songs in a way that actually had them transition, idk if you have any streaming services or maybe your editor could sort of splice them together (if the workloads not too much) but just for this album specifically i feel like it's such an experience and part of that is those transitions! for me anyway. especially with THE LINDA MARTELL SHOW going into YA YA it definitely creates a sort of cinematic atmosphere. no pressure of course just something to consider! loved the reaction

justin/zuo

(and i just say this for any future albums, not necessarily like react to cowboy carter again)

alishay carp

I think you should re listen to this (EVEN JUST BY YOURSELF) and then take notes to tell us lol. I liked it way better after a few listens <3

Kennedy Glenn

I think if you sit down and listen to the transitions on your own this album will grown on you. Beyoncé is one of those artists that is super intentional and creates an album as an art piece, usually drawing from Black history. There's tons of videos on tiktok dissecting this album and how it's one of beyoncés best work.

A

Thanks for sharing your full, unadulterated response. I was disappointed by some of your reactions, but I’m grateful for your honesty. As a queer man of colour who’s more drawn to experimental forms, I felt immediately at home in Cowboy Carter’s ambition—but I also know that’s shaped by my own experiences. You mentioned feeling more connected to Lemonade because of its traditional structure, and I totally understand that—but I just hope “traditional” doesn’t start to mean “better.” Beyoncé’s spent the past decade reshaping what a song or album can be, and Cowboy Carter is a major part of that. It’s not always easy to sit with, but there’s something powerful in letting the discomfort teach us.
