One of the reasons I love friends so much is that they do tackle very progressive topics and they did push the envelope more than any other 90s show. I think that they were the first if not one of the very first shows to show a same sex couple on television and have it be a big deal but not a big deal at the same time. And as you get into the show, you’ll see how they go about things pretty darn respectfully for that time. I mean, this is still a thing today with the whole “boobs thing” and how guys react to them. This transcends no matter if this was made in the late 90s or now it would still be the same unfortunately. And Joey‘s parents basically have an open marriage which is also a known thing, especially nowadays. there’s tons of people that have those kind of relationships. but once again, it wasn’t something that was ever really talked about. Friends put a lot of things on the map and made it seem like it was normal, just a different reality for some people. That’s why I love that show. They make you laugh and think about topics differently and just made you believe that these things weren’t such a big deal. You’ll see that the first season might revolve around relationships but the core of friends is the sixth of them and the friendship between them. you’ll see that going forward.

sounds like you are confusing open relationships and poly relationships, you seem to have them switched. open is when you are allowed to sleep with people outside of your relationship. polyamorus is simply being involved romantically with more than one partner with understanding and consent from all parties. a poly couple could be in an open relationship or a closed one. joeys parents situation seems to lean poly and closed exCEPT for the fact that they clearly haven't talked about it and set boundaries. I say poly and closed becaue Joeys dad is from what i gathered, in a committed relationship with two partners, not sleeping with people outside of those relationships. but it is really interesting that Friends decide to bring the topic up, people have said it before but the rest of the series they continue to dip their toe into other really intresting topics and dynamics uuh personally never been in a relationship and im under a ace with a dash of aro umbrella 😂, but i can't imagine being in a poly relationship much less an open one personally. its kind of intresting how vastly ace and aro people can differ on their feelings for poly and open relationships. i mean that's true for all sexual and romantic orientations but i just think its complex in a different way with someone who has little to no sexual or romantic attraction.

I'm too much of a loser to have had a real relationship. I had a fling about 20 years ago. Nothing since. Its just me, my dog, and my chinchillas.

Before I met my husband, (11 years ago) I hadn’t really dated a lot. I came out when I was like 21 and just had fun basically. He was pretty much my first boyfriend. Years into our relationship we decided it would be fun to explore but only together, never on our own. Eventually we met someone who we fell for hard and decided to be together as a “throuple”. This July will be our 4 year anniversary. It wasn’t something we were looking for, it happened very naturally. Hell, I never thought I’d be married before 30 either but life happens.

This very interesting, and to me all kinds of relationships are valid and no one gets to tell you otherwise! As a gay man, I’ve often had great dates with men that would’ve potentially turned into something more than just dates, but they were clear they wanted an open relationship. Personally, it’s not an option for me at all. I am monogamous and I don’t want to share my person! So I’m still in search of my person who’d be in it only with me. But hey, that’s just me and what I want in life, if you want different things who am to tell you it’s not valid?!

I feel like if the lines of communication are actively open and all involved parties are in constant agreement to the situation, then do what works however that looks. It’s when someone goes against a predetermined agreement that I’m not okay with. You loose that trust that is so important in relationships that is so hard to earn back once lost.

With my husband of Almost 8 years, I would never be okay with him being with another women and I have no intentions of cheating on him with another man. But I never judge anyone else's relationships as long as all parties are okay with it and there is open communication on all sides then go for it lol

I'm of the whatever works for you, works for you mindset lol If all parties are happy and communicating, I see no issues. I grew up very religious and could never imagine anything other than religious, monogamous marriage. Now I'm a divorced athiest who thinks all consenting relationships are valid lol If I were ever to be in a relationship again, I'd be open to being poly. I think sometimes your heart just has more room to love another person. I think I would only be comfortable though if everyone involved knew each other and got along. Not all parties would need to be attracted to each other, but I'd feel more comfortable with everything out in the open and friendly. My best friend, who also grew up very religious, is now in an open marriage. They've been married for almost 15 years, and have recently set similar boundaries as your friend and her husband. They talk about everything and don't keep secrets. Like your friend, mine has had other partners, only sexual with no feelings attached, while her husband has not. In all honesty, it will probably always be that way. He's just not the kind of person that would be interested in anyone else. But their marriage has never been better, so it works for them. They're happy, so I'm happy for them 💜

I just want to say that I miss Season One Joey. He was even cooking and chopping vegetables. And he had depth.

I think everyone's relationship is different. Polyamory and open relationships work for some people, and more power to them for living how they want to live. Personally, I couldn't do it. I've been cheated on a few times, and it sucks. I had an abusive ex girlfriend tell me once when we were trying to get back together that if I didn't trust her fully, she'd sleep around until I decided to trust her completely. Needless to say, that wasn't the way to make me trust her. If my current girlfriend were to propose being in an open relationship, I wouldn't be okay with it. It would break my heart, but I'd have to end it for my own well being. I'm a monogamous being, and I'm far too insecure and jealous to think about my person being with someone else. I love one person fully with everything I am, and I want someone to do the same for me.

When I was younger I was all about 100% monogamy and ideally I still lean toward that feeling. However, after 2 marriages in my 20's, and now being almost 35, I feel like worrying about monogamy is more stressful than just being present in the situation you're in. I feel like as long as you are getting what you need from your partner and not being neglected or ignored, like if they do step out, it isn't a make or break kind of situation anymore. I still would prefer for my partner to be loyal to me and I am a very loyal person, however, I sort of feel like as long as the foundation is solid, it really doesn't affect me whatever is going on in the background. It sounds dumb but (even to me) but I've sort of just adapted to different situations over the years.

I personally would not be able to be in an open/polyamorous relationship and honestly have a hard time understanding how anyone can. But I don't judge and if it works for some people then that's great. That being said, in Joey's parents' case there doesn't seem to be open communication and the mum just kind of 'accepts' it but isn't necessarily okay with it. She also talks about how well he treats her due to guilt, which, if it was an actual agreement between them he wouldn't have to feel guilt (at least to my understanding of open/poly relationships). As for the boobies, it is important to note that though women's breasts are considered sexual they're not a reproductive organ, so comparing breasts to a penis is not really accurate. On the other hand, women see men's nipples all the time and it's not a big deal so there is a clear societal difference, and therefore women's nipples can't really be compared with men's nipples either. Whether that is the way it should be is an entirely different conversation altogether.

Personally, I have never dated. If I were to date or be in a relationship I would want it to be monogamous (Just me and the other person). For others, I don't judge. They can do what makes them happy in their relationship, however, I do think there should be communication on how that relationship looks/is like with their partner.

This may be random but I don't think I could ever be in a relationship if it isn't mangomus that's just but on the tithe rtopic I was raised in a family of most woman so anything like that is completely normal although I don't have two brothers but there growing up I a house where they were raised by woman my brother won't even come in my room unless I say they can they were raised that this is a female house hold mainly so you respect there boundarys I was raised in the mindset of boobs are for babys although I have had some experience with men just staring at my.boobs but it gets normal at some point my friend is in a long term relationship and she used her to her advantage when her man is upset of mad at her she flashes him and it normally brake the ice so they can fix what's happening I can remember being about 18 and having some friends round to my house and I can remember me and my friends in my room trying on clothes we were absolutely but naked and it was just normal however when my sister came in she was very concerned that we were just trying on clothes and not covering up she is very conservative I'm not I just don't care I was at my aunties house the other day she isn't actually blood related but I call her my auntie and there is abouta 11 year age gap and me and her and her mum were trying in clothes it wasn't a big deal also I was the same with my reatioships fairly quickly I would just facetime them when Im getting ready it's just I don't care there lumps of skin at the end of the day my friends used to try my clothes on and my tops never fit them they all had smaller chests that me so they used to say to for goodness sake if they get any bigger I used to laugh even shopping the amount of times I've been shopping and one of my friend try something on and it's looks good on them there covered enough but not to much I go to try it on and it's a different story. My sister always makes the same joke every time she sees me drop anything down my top or adjust and pull it up witch I must do about 10 times a day look at me I have nothing you have them for the both of us and the comment I get in my house when I don't wear a bra is very funny but it's normal that's how I was raised

I personally am monogamous when I'm dating someone but I believe people should live their lives however they want. My best friend is polyamorous and I love learning about it and hearing about her relationships!!
