I will never not cringe when Noya and Tanaka meet the girl that Tanaka knew in elementary school haha.

Adam was 1000% in his element watching all the players say hi to each other, size each other up, and eyeball the girls' teams though. He lives for this stuff!

It makes sense that Hokkaido sends two schools, it is the biggest prefecture in Japan and it occupies the entire island of Hokkaido, the northernmost of the big islands of Japan. And Tokyo is not only the capital city of the country but also one of the most populated cities in the whole world... Miyagi, city of Sendai aside, is more a rural area as you could guess from the usual interactions between Tanaka and Yamamoto XD. I seem to recall that the quality of the animation was so bad at this point that people complained a lot week after week. This was a 2 cour season, which means that the season was divided in two halves with a few months break in the middle. Those of us who were watching at the moment were hoping for the animators to be given more time to work on the second cour, because yes, COVID had an impact on the production of this season but also the pressure the animators had to release all they could in the less time frame possible was brutal (but not as brutal as in the last season of Attack on Titan, you'll see when you get there). I won't say whethere they succeed or not because you'll be able to see that for yourselves soon. Just, think that, yes, the animation is awful, yes many scenes were given to other animation studions, smaller ones, for support, yes, the cost was reduced but the times were also very very reduced. Please, be understanding of that. I don't know how it is now but back in the day working conditions at many huge and full of pressure animation studios were almost dehumanizing. Add to that the impediments that came along with COVID and confinement.

I honestly didn't mind the animation when I watched the first time, but I remember getting lots of comments from people who really didn't like it

And that's ok, tastes are personal, but you know that sometimes critics go too far. Not your case of course, it's just that I remember how awful it was back then.

Are those comments about this seasons animation quality really that common?? I definitely had always noticed a change in the style, but I just assumed it was a different Animation Director, with their own quirks. And sure, a couple episodes have segments that are less than stellar, but I think the highs far far outnumber the lows in terms of animation quality for certain moments. I admit, it may have taken a rewatch to 2 to truly appreciate the style, but now I can confidently say, I love it. It's so loose and emotional and, like, you don't always have to stay on-model! It's cool to see these characters express in different ways, and I think this season does an amazing job at that. Also: Bokuto: "Hey hey hey!!" Sarah: >:( Adam: :D

Poor Daichii's face got absolutely mutilated this episode. I feel bad because I know the animators did the best they could with what they had, but there are certain shots where he just looks like a monstrosity and it can be hard to watch sometimes.

I do love the little slice of life moments we get before tournaments and matches...🥰

Yeah the animation never bothered me at all as I love Haikyuu for the story and characters and I'm not at the place where I'm an animation expert. It'd have to be really bad for me to notice like stick figure bad.

Haikyuu is a shounen manga (with boys as their demographic) so its focus is gonna be more on the boys, but Haikyuu is also a lot better than most shounen when it comes to portraying female characters. If you want to see more female-focused show, shoujo and josei (with girls and women being their demographic) and even seinen (that aims at men) like Skip and Loafer would be better. It's just that shounen are usually more popular so those shows are gonna win polls more often.

whenever i see the entrance ceremony in this episode (and the introductions for the shiratorizawa match in season 3) i get so emotional 🥹 it's like seeing my kids' accomplishments and being there with them. even though canonically, im younger than the players LOL (im the same age as kunimi!)

its just after high quality animation, that was attack-on-titan level, the drop was a big contrast and thus noticeable. Especially the matches.

I very much agree that most anime do a bad job of portraying fleshed-out female characters An anime that's an exception of this trend is called "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End". It's the highest rated anime on myanimelist (a popular anime ranking site), and a favorite among anime fans. It's got a female lead, and is one of the best modern anime shows. If you're looking for something with well written women, then I would consider this one for sure! Shizuku is definitely not as bad as they can get though... Also, I loved seeing Adam's reaction to all the teams meeting. I could almost see his memories through his eyes

There are 47 prefectures in Japan. Volleyball clubs exist in almost all junior and senior high schools. This means that there are as many volleyball clubs as there are high schools, all of which participate in the regional qualifying tournaments for the spring high school and inter-high school competitions. Incidentally, the top 10 prefectures in terms of number of high schools are as follows Looking at these figures, Hokkaido's two quotas for Spring High Schools seems a little privileged. Tokyo 429 Hokkaido 270 Osaka 254 Kanagawa 228 Aichi 221 Hyogo 205 Saitama 191 Chiba 181 Fukuoka 163 Shizuoka 136 There are 96 high schools in Miyagi Prefecture. In Japanese schools, there are about 100 hours of physical education each week per year, much of which is spent playing volleyball or basketball. In addition, all schools hold an inter-class ball games competition once a year. In many cases, volleyball and basketball are also the events of the competition. Volleyball is a very familiar sport for us.

As near as I can tell, it was not them losing money or people but indeed a conscious effort to a new direction. The models are simpler but also much more in line with the manga. And that simplicity, coupled with less of a focus on being "on model" 100% of the time, allows the animation to be more dynamic. We're gonna see that more and more when the matches start in earnest, but the best example so far in Hoshiumi's introduction a few episodes back. They play a lot more with perspective this season than they did in previous ones. On a personal level, I am not sure either style is better or wose. I see the pros and cons in both.

Sarah

I think it's a nice little breather before diving in again too

Sarah

I get goosebumps every time!!

Thank you for this breakdown. It is really helpful!!

Another highly ranked anime with really wonderful female characters and very tight plot is Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I strongly recommend that one.
