Shinobu's older sister Kanae was a demon slayer! We see her in flashbacks at the end of season 1, ep 24 and 25. The haori Shinobu wears was originally her sisters. Shinobu started wearing it after she died.

shinobu’s older sister kanae was originally the flower hashira! after she passed away, kocho took her place as the insect hashira. kanae was a kind, sweet, and nurturing person; after her old sister died, kocho, even though a harsh and somewhat aggressive girl, aimed to embody the same personality as kanae. however, even though she puts on a mask of being kind, she is still filled with anger and hatred toward demons. all of this is revealed in the later episodes of season 1. this is also why we see her briefly display anger when she was kneeling in the room at the end.

Now that you’ve seen Giyuu’s backstory, does his past interactions with all the other hashiras change how you feel about him in those moments?

Its hard to say where Giyu is strength-wise compared to the other hashira. My only assumption is he is likely not the weakest, probably somewhere in the upper middle. We unfortunately have too little info to set in stone where each hashira lie in ranking. From vague hints, we can assume Gyomei is the strongest, and I personally think Shinobu is the weakest. She mentioned she is the only hashira incapable of beheading a demon, needing to rely on poison to kill them. She is however likely the smartest hashira by far since she developed the poisons herself. Another factor is their strengths will change based on if they end up manifesting marks. For example Rengoku with the mark against Akaza probably still wouldn't have beaten him but he would've potentially survived the encounter long enough for Akaza to need to escape the sunlight. It would be fun for both of you to do a ranking of the hashira's comparative strengths after you've fully caught up with the anime.

I been told that Giyu is as strong as Wind Hashira, but inferior to Rock Hashira. Overall, he should be among the most powerful ones in the Hashira

Hey, just got to this episode since I’ve been catching up on your demon slayer reactions- something I wanted to mention that I’m not sure if you’d noticed is Giyuu’s haori (coat). I’m sure you know it’s a bit weird and most people in universe can easily identify him just by mentioning it. The reason he wears it is pretty sad- the red half is from his dead sister’s kimono and you can see him wearing the fully red haori in the flashbacks while he was training alongside Sabito. The checkered half is from Sabito’s kimono that you can see him wearing in his ghost form. So Giyuu cut up the kimonos of his dead sister and best friend and wears their ghosts and memory on his shoulders. 😭
