I love that we can still follow the teams and characters that we have gotten to know throughout the anime. This was a great transitionary episode into the next match.

Akaashi and the rest of the Fukurodani squad need honorary psychology degrees for how they've learned to adapt to Bokuto's behavior hahaha

Tbf, while we’ve seen that ushijima is a good passer, I don’t think he ever stood out as a blocker. Plus, we saw in the training camp that both the coaches and Kageyama noted how impressed they were with his setting during the position swap practice match. This isn’t really a definitive statement of who’s better in their position or who contributes more to their team, but I don’t think it’d be unfair to say that Hoshiumi is probably a better all-round player.

Hinata 100% gave Hoshiyumi a respectful bow. Also o be fair Saeko is a loose unit so I think that skews tanaka's idea about girls.

Great video as usual, one minor plot hole that has always bothered me that was revealed in this episode. Wouldn't the crypt keeper have seen Hoshiyumi when Shiratorizawa went to nationals the previous season? Given Hoshiyumi is a 2nd year, Washijo should have already been aware it's possible to be a smaller player and extremely talented, even more so than Hinata.

Yes Sarah we know Bokuto is a baby, but he's our baby 👶

In my opinion, I dont think Washijo ever thought it was impossible for a smaller player to be extremely talented/skilled. He's been coaching for years and most definitely would have been aware of players like Hoshiumi, Nakashima and even the previous Little Giant. The thing is, they have very different playstyles from Hinata. They play as highly techincal generalists, striving to excel at ball control, defense and passing to fill in gaps on their teams while also hittting (often to great success) compared to the highly offensive point scoring one would expect from the conventional 'ace'. I think it's the fact that Hinata plays a highly offensive game that rocks Washijo's worldview because its closer to how he wanted to play volleyball. This ties in with that line in season 3 about wanting a "simple strength" rather than wanting "a way to fight, even though [he's] small". (He didn't want to play like Hoshiumi and Nakashima, he prefers simplicity and power). He never got to play that way, and he copes with that lost opportunity by saying it'd be impossible for anyone that tall to play that way. In comes Hinata who was granted an opportunity Washijo never was (supported by a genius setter with a team that believed in him) and Washijo is kind of like "why should you get everything I didn't when you're not half as skilled as I was, that's not fair". That's got to be a slap in the face to him, so he wants to deny Hinata, which is childish, yes, but also makes sense imo and I love how it ties into the Tendou quote in ep 10 ("Isn't what drives most people childish in general?"). I feel when Washijo looks at short players like Hoshiumi he thinks "excellent player, not my style". But when he looks at Hinata (by season 3 at least) all he sees is a below average player, who is attempting to brute force his way through the games without technique to make up for his height. Weirdly, Hinata is actually more reminiscent of someone like Hyakuzawa that manages to dominate point scoring despite lacking technique and fundamentals. It's not that Hinata was the first short player Washijo ever saw succeed, but that Hinata was the first short player he saw succeed by playing a "tall person's style of volleyball", which was the type of volleyball he wanted to play. Sorry for the essay, I'm very passionate about Haikyuu as you can tell 😂😂

If Adam wasn't a coach, he would have been a great scout. Is it me or is Sarah's brows twitching more than usual? ;)

Sarah

He actually was a scout for a couple pro teams and the indoor national team, so good call!!

Bokuto/Fukurodani fans rise up the announcements today were for us

Milly I. Nakai

Yes, Hinata’s bow to Hoshimi was definitely out of respect, and also because Hoshiumi is a senior (2nd year), and that counts in the Japanese society, including in the school clubs’ environment.

New Haikyuu movie “VS The Little Giant” is on the way, guys! Plus a short TV anime of the Fukurodani VS Mujinazaka match has also been confirmed.

I know I'm super behind. But I'm catching up! I just wanted to say im I'm glad you both mentioned the announcers when it comes to commentating the smaller players. It's so prominent when we watch the asian teams play. Not sure how many times I've heard "that's a great block for a height mismatch" or "what a swing from the smallest guy on court". I'm like, nah that's just a great block. Period.
