You asked for more jazz (at least, some of you did), so this week I'm talking about the single most important thing you should be doing if you want to get into jazz guitar: learning tunes. Taking the jazz standard Autumn Leaves as a case study, I discuss how to understand and memorise the piece, and give you some options for playing the chords and melody. This is mostly a jazz-beginner kind of video, but there are a few more advanced ideas and concepts sprinkled in there too.

This is a follow up video to the lesson I did a few weeks back on beginner jazz chords. Do check that out if you've not already seen it.

I've put together a detailed set of tabs to accompany the video which you can find below. (There's also an audio clip of my chords and melody play-through which I need to to cut from the video as I got a copyright notice.)

Awesome. I've been playing around with this sweet jazz tune for ages. Thanks.

Could you do a similar lesson on 'Summertime' please? Steve FOSTER

So great to get your take on this tune Love the chord arrangement on strings 2, 3, & 4. I'd be on this one this weekend, if I weren't still getting all kinds of inspiration and milage out of your Sin City lesson!

Fabulous lesson Adrian ... I would love you to do more of these jazz lessons - pretty please!!!

Daniel Stumeier

Love these jazz lessons! Would you consider making a lesson about chord melody/solo guitar arrangements? Also, love how you have more and more string lights as your channel continues 😀

Martin Westacott

Having just treated myself to a real book, this is a really clear and useful lesson. Keep it up, more Jazz please.

Thanks Daniel. Yes, definitely might do a video on solo arrangements in the future. And glad you noticed the lights - can never have too many if you ask me!

Thanks Martin. Yes, there seems to be quite a bit of interest in these jazz lessons, so I will try and keep them coming in the future.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, like that idea. That's another essential tune that's quite beginner-friendly.

Thank-you. Yes, whenever I do jazz I always assume it won't be as popular as the other stuff I do, but I'm actually quite surprised how many people seem to like the jazz videos. Will definitely keep them coming.

John Chaplin

I agree, Adrian, you have such an excellent teaching style! Thank you for tying together the concepts so clearly. Cheers.

Thanks for the breakdown of the ii-v-i approach. Every few years I've been going back and relearning this piece, rote memorization doesn't stick. And then a few months back I figured I'd transpose it to a different key ... and it felt like way more work than necessary. So this lesson was really useful, Adrian. Like the Telecaster on the jazz tune also.

Stephan Dreher

Great lesson, Adrian. Autumn leaves is a good entry to jazz stuff. What annoys me is that a plattform like youtube still didn't manage to introduce a tutorial licence in using copyrighted music. All my fav YT teacher (Paul Davids, Rick Beato, Adam Neely, etc.) got trouble with it. Carry on with your good work!

Neal Pike

Slowly working through Kenny Burrell songs then will do your jazz lessons in order Can we have some more indie /alternative /shoegaze please

The F#m7b5 at the 14th fret .Any tips which fingers to use.I find it really hard

Jonathan Tobias

The best and most approachable walkthrough of a jazz tune I have seen. Thanks!

Phil Row

I am very pleased that you have decided to do some jazz tunes. Can't get enough of these for me. Thanks

Really enjoyed this, and the previous lesson on jazz chord vocabulary. Would you consider covering common comping rhythms in a future lesson? I'm kinda stuck in a Charleston rut

How doi get cord diagrams

anyonecanplayguitar

Hi David, all the chords are written out in tab/standard notion in the workbook PDF above. There are no diagrams specifically, but if you use Guitar Pro you could generate diagrams from the tab if required. Hope that helps. Also, check out the previous jazz chords lesson if you've not already seen it, which does contain diagrams - https://www.patreon.com/posts/essential-jazz-100431877
