So I'm not playing guitar at all in this week's video: I thought I'd make a video all about drums. It's so useful for us guitar players to have an understanding of how drums work, and this video is my guide to the basics.

I take you on a tour of my drum kit, have a look at how some common drum patterns are put together, and then talk about how I create drum parts for my songs and backing tracks.

Hope you find it interesting. Back to guitar next week...probably!

What you NEED to know about drums (as a guitar player)

Drums, on a guitar channel?! Please bear with me...I think it's so important for guitar players to have a basic understanding of how drums work. In this video I cover drum basics, take a look at how common drum patterns are built, and discuss how I create drum parts for my songs and backing tracks. Song Notes by David Pots

Love to see this! Just bought my first set (roland TD-02KV) -- so fun to finally have something to get daily practice on.

What a great idea. This is going to be really helpful thank you.

Marla Starchild

thank you for this awesome insight into your backing tracks! I'v been hoping you'd shed some light on this for a long time.

What a fantastic topic Adrian. Thank you!

Good stuff! I have come to realize the importance of good rhythm and time. I recently acquired an electric drum kit to help me work on this so this lesson is timely and spot on. Thanks for this and all the other great lessons I have enjoyed over the past few years!

I took drum lessons for six months and was playing hours and hours a day just to better understand the role was a vocalist and guitar player. SO HELPFUL!

Very helpful and timely Adrian. I have been learning how to use EZDrummer and EZBass, from the same people that made Superior Drummer. I use them to put together some of my own backing tracks. This info you share here, relates directly to that, and has confirmed some of the things I have found coming to grips with using this sort of Software. It's also timely, as I recently reconnected with the an old friend, and the Drummer from the band I was in, in 1980/81 (I was the Bass player). This is very fortuitous, as I have maintained contact with the Guitarist from that Band, and my closest friend, over all these years. We are having a catch up later in the year. While I look forward to a bit of nostalgia, we all appear to be pretty keen on sharing what we are all doing now, as far as our Music stuff. For me that will be about my recently acquired Guitar playing/projects. Thanks again Pete

Thanks very much Adrian - super helpful lesson. You are a man of many (and until now - hidden drum) talents. I appreciate the thought you put into your lesson selections and creations. Cheers

Thanks Adrian! I often wondered how you got your drums sounding so good on your backing tracks. My toms in Guitar Pro always have this 'bonging' sound. So I've just started using Cubase (only because I got a version with my TR30ii amp) to make backing tracks. I'm currently working on a backing track for Alice by The Sisters of Mercy and the software TR-606 I have isn't doing it justice. I've had to put bags of plate reverb on it to get it to sound decent, especially the toms. So, I really enjoyed your timely video. It would be great if you did some more on creating great sounding backing tracks.

Never seen a video demonstrating basic drum rhythm like this. Super valuable. Gracias. I’m off now to listen to some 12 bar blues and zone in on the drums. Love this.

Graham Owen

Very useful, as always...

Super useful video! Programming drums is a real challenge. And I have the same issue with EZDrummer/Superior Drummer, i.e. the MIDI grooves often being too complicated and flash for my needs. It's great to get some guitarist-friendly advice on how to program more straightforward and grooves and fills, thanks!

Great, maybe is "understanding bass" another one?
