This week, I'm continuing my occasional series of jazz lessons with a look at how I approach soloing over chord changes. Once again I'm taking the standard Autumn Leaves as an example, and I examine how to use arpeggios to fluently and melodically navigate the tune. I cover a lot of ground in this video, so if you're new to this kind of thing there should be plenty of material to keep you busy for quite a while.

Even if you're a non-jazzer, I hope you'll find some valuable ideas in this video which will help you with your soloing in other styles.

I've tabbed out all the examples in the video below, and I'm also going to attach my backing track.

Hope you enjoy the video.

Speak next week,

Adrian

This is excellent, Adrian, thank you so much! Autumn Leaves is a great choice. One of the first jazz songs I started to work on; it is quite approachable for those in their early stages of guitar learning, and also a wonderful song for seasoned players to explore as a foundation for improv.

Don't apologize for jazz, we like your variety...next week, the Stooges or the Ramones!

Dan is absolutely spot on! Love that Adrian always selects such interesting music for us to learn, be it a concept or a song. I don't really hear things in genres as much as I used to; it's more about whether I'm interested or drawn in by what I'm hearing. And with Adrian exploring such a variety of styles, it fits right in!

Awesome lesson Adrian! Super valuable. It would be cool to get your take on a solo lesson for John Coltrane's Impressions perhaps using inspiration from the Wes Montgomery version.

Love looking at jazz through the lens of arpeggios! I'm definitely a jazz beginner and haven't properly learned my arpeggios yet. Happy weekend Adrian and thank you!

Hello Adrian, good bye weekend. Absolute cracker of a lesson. Can you please provide a link to the arpeggio lessons you talk about at the beginning. Also would like to suggest Fly Me To The Moon as another beginner friendly to work on. I totally love these lessons. Actually, I love most of your lessons. Thank you so much.

I think I've got my summer sorted as far as the guitar goes. This is going to prove super valuable even if I never attempt to play jazz guitar outside of my bedroom. Thanks!

Matty

Thanks Neill. Greatly appreciated.

Great lesson. I'd love to see you show us "Laura". I don't know how complicated the chord structure is, but it is a beautiful haunting ballad.

Excellent lesson Adrian - love these jazz sessions - very welcomed. I would agree with some of the other suggestions for Fly Me To The Moon, ATTYA, Body and Soul, Night and Day, or anything Wes Montgomery!

Am working on other stuff at the moment and in the words of Magnus Magnusson, I've started so I need to finish. Although I am not a jazz connoisseur, this tutorial is most useful, provided you review the Autumn Leaves basics. I will come back to this one. Thanks Adrian as always. It's impossible to try out everything Adrian does. However, just for fun, I'd love to find out the follower who has followed and tried out the most tutorials.
