This week I'm taking a look at one of my all-time favourite songs, I Am The Cosmos by Chris Bell. Unless you're a fan Big Star (Bell was a founding member of the band) it's likely you won't have heard the name Chris Bell before. But he was a fantastic, tragically under-appreciated, songwriter whose music deserves to be much more widely-known. This song really wouldn't sound out of place on a late period Beatles album.

I've tabbed everything below, including the lovely, melodic guitar solo. (A couple of little errors in the tab now fixed!)

If you're already a Chris Bell fan, I hope you enjoy it. And if not, I hope this video serves as an introduction to his work, and that it will inspire you to dig a bit deeper into his music.

Great choice! Thank you!

JAMES BUTLER

Yes this is a wonderful song...been playing around with it for a while as some other lessons around so looking forward to getting stuck in.

As do others, I’ve suspected (read:knew) that Chris Bell was the genius behind Big Star. Thanks for this!

Jonathan I Benisvy

Just a beautiful song and album. Lovely choice again, Adrian.

Mike Warner

Perfect! I always played that second chord as some sort of variation on Amaj7 with a hammer off on the B string but yours sounds spot on

Dustin Weaver

Majestic. Lovely to learn the C/D to D7 transition that's so distinctive -- not yet reflected in the tab, FWIW.

Jeffrey Edwardson

Thanks Adrian! One of my favorites too. And on of my favorite guitar solos. So good they had to put it early in the song. Love the bass playing on this whole record.

Thanks Diana. Yes, BS post Bell were a very different band. But I do think Alex Chilton was a very different kind of genius in his own right I think. Kind of a Lennon/McCartney type scenario!

Thanks Luca. I'm always a bit nervous to vocalise this prominently on my channel, but glad you like ti!

Thanks Mike. Yes, I've played this one in a few different ways myself over the years. But I did some deep listening in preparation for this video, and feel I've got a little bit closer now to what it's all about.

In about 24 hours I'll be at the Big Star Radio City tribute in Chicago -- excellent timing, Adrian! Of course, any time is the right time for Big Star and Chris Bell. Thank you so much for a lesson I'll pore over when I get back home to my guitars ❤️ Wonderful to hear you sing this, too: spot on!

Mark Sorensen

So nice! One of my favorite albums ever (and songs). Thank you for this. Would love more Big Star/Chris Bell lessons.

Big - Big Star fan here along with their reincarnation Teenage Fanclub!

Discovered Chris Bell and this song via the This Mortal Coil cover n the Album "Blood". Then listened to Chris and Big Star. once again a great Artist that might not have gotten wide recognition, but influenced so many others.

Michael Martí Menzel

Discovered Big Star via The Nomads and their version of Alex Chilton's song Bangkok. A voyage from garage/punk to power-pop. Saw Chillton playing live in 1987.

Great lesson, Adrian. Are you going to the Radio City tribute concert in London in October?

You keep piling on winning content Adrian. Many thanks for your sterling effort and time needed to create this excellent content.!

Hey, Adrian, if you have any interest, I recorded video up close of Chris Stamey taking the first solo (on a strat) on Big Star Quintet's rendering of I Am the Cosmos this past weekend in Chicago. He is such an underrated (unacknowledged, really) power pop god and a lovely person. Jon Auer took the second solo on an Epiphone SG. Everyone at the two gigs was on a blackface Deluxe Reverb (except John Stirratt on a p-bass w Ampeg). Thanks again for the lesson!!
