Hi all! This week we're looking at the classic rockabilly/country tune Hello Mary Lou which features some typically fantastic James Burton guitar work.

In the video I cover the iconic guitar solo, and also go through some rhythm guitar ideas, both easy chords and a more elaborate electric rhythm part.

It's all tabbed out below. And there's also a backing track to play along to.

Hope you enjoy it!

Hello Mary Lou - Classic country/rockabilly from James Burton

I love this classic James Burton solo. And it provides a great workout in hybrid picked rockabilly and country bending. Yess!! Been waiting for this one Adrian, thanks 🙏

Terence Stamp

Thanks Adrian. Excellent, as usual.

Pål Jonassen

Hopefully we get some Burton work with Elvis live in Vegas!

David Beckey

Fantastic choice, excellent lesson!

Ben D

Love your country lessons. This is a must know classic.

Over the last few years I have collected several tabs of this song, contained in books and guitar magazines: they are all a bit different and none seem accurate to me. None of them contain the electric guitar rhythm part, or a rhythm is proposed that is not the one heard on the record! The transcription of the solo in the booklet included in the DVD 'The legendary guitar of James Burton' is written in a way that I cannot read...! The transcriptions in the books "Rockabilly Guitar Bible" and "The Ricky Nelson Guitar Collection" (very rare), both published by Hal Leonard, have something wrong... So thanks to Adrian for his study of one of the finest 'classic rockabilly' songs in history! Is this tab the definitive version?

Luca Solari

I think we have to resign ourselves to the fact that it is impossible to play James Burton's guitar parts exactly as he played them! And there's always a bit of chicken pickin' hidden between the spaces... even in the Hello Mary Lou solo... could you hear it?

anyonecanplayguitar

Haha yes I think that's true! I did put this one under the microscope while preparing the video and I think you just have to accept that due to the nature of the recording it's impossible to hear exactly what he's playing in a couple of places. That's where the transcriber needs to use a bit of judgement or educated guesswork. And JB never plays it exactly the same way twice of course. I checked out a few live versions and the version he plays on the Hotlicks lesson - all slightly different!

So ultimately this is just my take on a classic solo. Hopefully it's close, but maybe it's not possible to have the definitive version of this one!?

Luca Solari

yes, I know... slowing down the tune understanding what's happening is even harder! I can only say that bar #15 starts with the note on the 4th string, 7th fret, reached sliding up from the 4th fret/4th string of the previous bar...

Luca Solari

and maybe there is a very short 'phantom' chicken pickin' in bars #11 and 14... who knows...

thanks Adrian (PS - typo in the title?)

Yet again you have delivered a classic lesson, Adrian. I figured this one out last year but via your lesson I picked up some nuances that I had missed. Many thanks again for sharing such great content.

Cristian Arantes

Nice lesson! If you dont mind, could you share more post-punk, new wave and goth stuff?

Jeff Runnels

Another fantastic tutorial! I’d love to see you take on a song (and sounds) from one of Steve Albini’s (RIP) songs. He has such an unusual sound and style! Please please please!

Chad Perry

I’m sorry if you’ve covered this but what are the specs on your tele?

anyonecanplayguitar

Hi Chad. Yes, it's a 52 reissue from around 1993 I think. I did a video a long time ago where I talk about it. If you search on YouTube you should find it!

Larry Lustgarten

Hi there. Was wondering how to download the gp files? Nothing works. Any clues?

anyonecanplayguitar

Hi Larry. Should simply be a case of clicking on the file and it will go straight to your downloads folder. I've just tested and it works for me. To open the file you will then need Guitar Pro software, but the content of the file is identical to the PDF. If you continue to have problems let me know and I'll try and help further!

Larry Lustgarten

Awesome…finally got it. Great solo. Love James Burton licks!

Jerome Oks

Adrian, I recorded the solo played by James Burton in audacity then I recorded your solo from the video, I aligned them and played them simultaneously. They sounded like one solo. You have great musical skills. Not that I ever doubted it, but that is pretty impressive.

Scott Bauerlein

Hi will the iPad version of the guitar pro open the gp file?

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, it should do. Though the functionality on the iPad app is a bit limited and doesn't have all the features of the desktop version.
